New trail running event strides into the Lake District for the Keswick Mountain Festival
Details have been announced of a new trail running event for the Lake District. The Borrowdale Trail Run, sponsored by Hi-Tec, will be held on Sunday 22 May and is expected to be one of the standout events of the Keswick Mountain Festival. There are only 250 places available on the run, which will follow a route through some of the most beautiful landscape in the UK.
There will be two distance options for competitors on the Borrowdale Trail Run – 22km and 12km. In an unusual feature of the event, all runners will reach the start via a short ferry journey on Derwentwater. Both routes will start on the shore of the lake and will follow courses that take competitors through Borrowdale, widely recognised as one of the most attractive valleys in the UK. The 22km run includes 538m of ascent and will be a good challenge for experienced trail runners. The 12km route has been designed for less experienced runners or those who want to take part in their first proper trail run.

The Keswick Mountain Festival has been growing fast since its foundation in 2007. Taking place from 20-22 May 2011, the festival will offer a wider range of events and activities than ever before. Also new for 2011 will be the Hi-Tec Trail Runner Zone, a feature that will incorporate expert sessions, test areas, nutrition and training advice, and opportunities to try out the trails with experts. The Borrowdale Trail Run will be the highlight of the trail running programme - it has been designed to be not only very competitive, but also provide runners and spectators with a great experience in a stunning location.
Lucy Bennett, director of Keswick Mountain Festival, adds: “Trail running was part of last year’s Keswick Mountain Festival and proved to be hugely popular. There has since been a big demand for an enhanced programme of trail running activities and we’re delighted that Hi-Tec have agreed to support our plans for 2011. The Trail Runner Zone is going to be a major feature of our Adventure Base Camp site in Keswick and the Borrowdale Trail Run is going to be a challenging and stunning event in its own right.”
Laura Greenaway, Marketing Communications Executive, Hi-Tec, comments: “We were delighted when the Keswick Mountain Festival approached Hi-Tec with the opportunity to get involved with the Trail Runner Zone. The concept is really strong and will be a great chance for us to showcase our new V-Lite Infinity trail running footwear. The Borrowdale Trail Run will be an exciting and fitting finale and it looks set to be an outstanding addition to the sporting calendar.
The Borrowdale Trail Run is being organised for the festival by High Terrain Events and online registration is now open at www.highterrainevents.co.uk.
