Marple 10k

The 4th annual Marple 10k went very well again this year. The event organised by Marple Firefighters is getting bigger each year with most competitors being local with a few participants travelling from around the UK.

This years event consisted of 222 runners with around 30 or so not making it on the day, ( maybe waking up to see rainy start to the day!)

The course for the race is run along mostly flat terrain with a slight incline off the Middlewood Way up onto the Macclesfield Canal. Underfoot it was damp on the day but it didn’t seem to affect the times of the quicker runners.

Men's results

1 Jack Morris 36:42
2 Stephen Burke 37:02
3 Dave Walmsley 37:54

Women's results

1 Annette Bowden 42:50
2 Caroline Wilson 43:36
3 Susan Clapham 45:15

As the runners finished the race the rain held off and the sun started to shine!

Apperley Quarter Marathon

The first Apperley Quarter Marathon was a resounding success with over 150 runners taking part in the mixed road / cross country race helping to raise funds for local cancer charity LINC.

The winner of the male race Dan Owen who won in a time of 39:27 managed to lose second place runner, Phil Parsons 39.48 , only in the latter stages of the race that was staged in great weather conditions and enthusiastically supported. The bronze medal was won by Adam Harper, who grew up in Apperley, in a time of 40:13

The winner of the ladies race was Michelle Parsons: 43.58 who was also in the top ten overall
and who was a good distance clear of second, Lucinda Potten 48.19, and third place, Sarah Fearn 52.36, runners.

Top cricketer and top local was Philip Wiseman, 18, who ran the race in a creditworthy 44:26.

Race organiser, Samantha Butler, said “The event was a great success for the club and the charity LINC and was well supported by the local community. We will have the runners results on the www.quartermarathon.co.uk web-site and look forward to making it an annual event”

Ely Standard 20th Grunty Fen Half Marathon

A pleasant dry and sunny morning greeted runners of the Ely Standard 20th Grunty Fen Half Marathon on Sunday. The event, which incorporates the Cambridgeshire County Championships and Road Race League attracted runners of all standards from far and wide. Although the sunny weather was much appreciated by spectators it was accompanied by a somewhat blustery wind which kept runners cool as they battled against it on parts of the exposed fenland course.

Ely Standard 20th Grunty Fen Half Marathon

This year the men's race was a thrilling affair with Paul Halford of Werrington Joggers seemingly coming from nowhere to contest the lead with Mathew Almond of Coventry Godiva before moving ahead to win by nearly a minute. Paul Miles of Owls AC was two further minutes back in third. Paul continued his blistering pace all the way to the finish and was clearly very pleased to win the race, raising his arms in triumph as he crossed the line.

The ladies race was also hard fought with Rebecca Cousins of Fenland RC fending off Ruth Jones of Nene Valley to win by just over a minute, herself a minute ahead of Joanne Baker of Chelmsford AC in third. The first three ladies had clearly given their all and were very tired at the finish.

Further down the field there was the usual mixture of smiles and grimaces aplenty as the several hundred runners crossed the finish line to warm applause from the watching friends and spectators.

Chestnut Tree House 10k Coastal Run

Although a race for serious runners, there were a couple of fancy dress runners including a Spiderman, a banana and a Dairylea cheese triangle!

The 1,050 runners got off to a great start with many getting personal best times including fastest man, Martin Footman, who crossed the finish line in a blistering 34 minutes, 26 seconds. First woman back was Katarina Larsson who originally comes from Sweden but is currently living in Portugal and was a last-minute entry on Friday when she came over to spend the weekend with her parents. Her time was 41 minutes, 21 seconds. Martin and Katarina both received trophies for their achievement.

This year’s race saw several new improvements including chip timing for all the runners, medals which they could get engraved with their times by A M Trophies and photos of them crossing the line by Studio IV, both with a percentage of the profits going to the charity to help boost funds.

Waseley Wobbler 2010 Multi Terrain 8.5m

The sun was shining but it was cool enough for some potential impressive times although the course was slippery in places. Nearly 100 runners lined up at Waseley Hills, south Birmingham, ready for the hilly, slightly altered 8.5m course ahead.

The lead runner Matt Hawcroft set off at a blistering pace and led out of the first field up the hills. There was plenty of encouragement from the marshals along the course although those towards the end were wondering what had happened with the large gap that had opened between first and second place. It was a fine finish for all runners with only one DNF who had difficulty in the first field and did the sensible thing and dropped out.

All the runners were cheered home to get an excellent medal with many joining in for the awards after as well as the home made cakes, tea, coffee and soft drinks. Special thanks to the organisers, marshals (nearly 40 of you) and the runners for making this such a great day.

Alice Holt Forest Farnham 10K

A bright sunny day added to the feel good factor for all those who took part in and helped with Farnham Runners annual Alice Holt Forest races. While the main race remains the 10k, for the fourth year there was also a 5km as well as junior 1km and 3km races and the popular “60 meter dash” for the under fives.

In the 10km the first three men all finished under 35 minutes, a worthy achievement over this hilly course on forest tracks. Julian Manning of Denmead Striders clocked 34-34 (gun time) with Justin Phillips (AFD) close behind in 34-44. Chris Beecham (unattached) came third and was first M40 with a time of 34-58.

Charlotte Collyer, an unattached runner, showed her huge potential with a sub 40 minute 39-12 just 7 days after winning the Kent Coastal marathon, the Alice Holt 10km being only her 5th race. Farnham Runners’ own took second and third ladies’ slots - Sarah Hill (1st F35) with 39-55 and Emma Whittaker-Axon with 42-05.

Wooburn Park 10K

The Wooburn Park annual 10K Run was held at Wooburn Green in Buckinghamshire. The weather was fine and sunny and there were over 300 entrants competing in 10 different categories.

The overall winner was Eddie O’Gorman who won in a time of 33 minutes and 50 seconds just outside the course record. The fastest lady was Lucy Buckby who crossed the finish line in a time of 41 minutes 19 seconds.

This is the eighth successive year that the race has taken place and the race organizers said it was their intention that the proceeds of the race would continue to be donated to promote local sport, and that they were delighted at the level of support for the event.

There was also a 3K race around the Park for children and parents and a 100 yard “dash” for toddlers.

Pangbourne 10k

Well the first ever Pangbourne 10k was held on a lovely sunny day with around 350 runners completing the course.

There were a few tething problems at registration but once the run got underway the overall feedback was of a great well marked and marshaled course.
There were kids races on the field once the race had started and a bouncy castle and entertainment for the non runners. Spectators and runner alike were able to enjoy the BBQ bacon and egg rolls.
