Brampton Brewery Spire 10

The Brampton Brewery Spire 10 mile road race organised by North Derbyshire Running Club attracted nearly 400 runners on Sunday 29th August. Runners battled the elements over the tough hilly course in windy, showery conditions. The race was won by Andy Greenleaf from Winchester in 53:11 followed by Ian Fisher 54:35 with 3rd place going to local runner Chris Shelton in 55:31. First home from the host club was Rod Smith in 6th place 60:06 with Peter Roberts of Clowne the 1st vet in 60:15.

The first lady was Ruth Jones of Nene Valley Striders, improving on her 2nd place from 2009 by over 5 minutes finishing in 66:58 34th overall. Second lady home was Myshola Kirkham of Coventry Godiva in 67:31. Claire Howard of Totley AC was 3rd and 1st vet 35 in 72:14.

Over 50 people took place in the Brampton Manor 2 mile fun run in Holmebrook Country Park. Many youngsters, fancy dress runners and walkers all enjoyed the hilly but picturesque 2 mile course which was started by the Brampton Manor Bear.

The Tehidy 10km

144 runners set off in warm sunshine. The route took in the North Cornwall cliffs west of Portreath, as well as trails through the woods of Tehidy country park.

The first across the line was 28 year old Simon Fisher of Abingdon AAC, with a time of 39:33. He was followed by Colin Snook of Cornwall AC in 43:17, and Duncan Oakes of St Austell Running Club in 44:54. The woman’s race was topped by Kathryn Philpotts of Hayle Runners in 48:01, followed by Hanne Kinnunen of Team Bath AC in 50:03 and Izzy Boyd in 50:29.

Unfortunately the first 20 or so runners had extended times due to confusion over the route: the park is open to the public and someone had sabotaged the course signing, likely after the start of the race.

However, this was soon put right and 120 runners enjoyed the correct course. Feedback was good from those who went the right way. Prizes included meals at local restaurants, gift vouchers from outdoor and running shops and also jackets from Finesterre, the local surf clothing company.

The Tehidy 10km raised over £700 for the charity Voluntary Services Overseas.

Arundel Castle 10

Overcast conditions for distance running greeted the over 600 entrants for this event, which was being run over the current course for the tenth time.

James Baker set a fast pace from the start, and maintained his lead right up to the finish line. The competition was very closely matched and a large number dipped under the 40-minute barrier.

Competition in the ladies race was also very strong, but last year’s winner, Emily Alden, romped home in a time of just over 40 mins. Jennifer Harley followed her home a minute and a half later.

Other information can be found on the Group’s website www.arundelscouts.org.uk and competitors can download pictures of themselves from www.sussexsportphotography.com.
