Race report: Arundel Castle 10k

by Editor
Monday 30th August 2010

Sunday August 29, 2010

Overcast conditions for distance running greeted the over 600 entrants for this event, which was being run over the current course for the tenth time.

Despite a slower course this year, regular participant and course record holder James Baker set a fast pace from the start, and maintained his lead right up to the finish line. As can be seen from the detailed results, Leighton Aspell came home in second place a short 23 seconds later. The competition behind these two was very closely matched and a large number dipped under the 40-minute barrier

Competition in the ladies race was also very strong, but last year’s winner, Emily Alden, romped home in a time of just over 40 mins. Jennifer Harley followed her home a minute and a half later.

In the Mens’ team event, triumph once again goes to Chichester Runners James Baker, Anthony Roddis and James Pennicott in a cumulative time of 1:51:12. The first Ladies’ team to cross the finish line was Emily Alden, Jenny Philips and Emily Iredale from Midhust Milers, in a time of 2:10:39.

This event is a major fund-raiser for the 1st Arundel Scout Group and the profits contribute greatly towards the running of the Group. The organisers are therefore very grateful to the Duke of Norfolk and his staff, for allowing them to utilise the Castle grounds for the event and facilitating its smooth running. They are also grateful to the West Sussex Gazette for their continuing support. Thanks also go to all the other willing volunteers without whom we would not be able to hold this event.

Other information can be found on the Group’s website www.arundelscouts.org.uk and competitors can download pictures of themselves from www.sussexsportphotography.com.
