The Faversham Marathon
The Faversham Marathon took place at the Recreation Ground at Faversham with 40 laps of the perimeter of the park with a gruelling hill on each lap. Conditions were fine for the runners - warm, with a slight breeze at the Whitstable road end. Within three hours we had a slight drizzle which was perfect for the runners.
Course records went to both male and female races: Male: Ian Berry: Winchester & District AC: 3hrs:55min:20sec. Female: Heather Mackay: 26.2 RRC: 3hrs:49min:32sec.
1st Kent club member was: Carl Jones in 3hrs:06min:53sec: Ashford & District RR. 1st local was Sally Silver from Whitstable in 4hrs:39min:40sec.
We had 53 finishers from 60 entries, 4 retired, 1 disqualified and 2 did not turn up.
Race Director Sid Morrison was very pleased with the race and his special thanks went to his Lap Counting team. He added "I am very grateful to Shepherd Neame and Swale Borough Council for their support to the Faversham Marathon. They have been ever present for past seven years."

RNLI Summer Sprint Crosby 10K
The first RNLI Summer Sprint took place on Crosby beach on Saturday 31 July. Starting and finishing on the beach by the Hall Road Coastguard station, a field of 150 tackled the out and back beach course in cool and windy conditions.
RNLI Lifeguards were among the runners raising money for the new RNLI Lifeguard service on Sefton's beaches. Running on the sand added a minute or more to most runner's times, but the course, through Anthony Gormley's another place, was widely regarded as challenging and interesting. Stuart Bennett was the clear winner in the men's race, with Ruth Moran taking the trophy in the women's.
A smaller field also took on a 5K fun run. The RNLI hopes to have raised around £3000 from the event.

Conditions for the race were ideal; dry, temperature around 16C and a light breeze. At low tide the sandy beach provides a fast, flat course that stretches out from Borth to the half way point at Ynyslas before returning to the start.

Sturminster Newton Half Marathon 2010
453 runners completed the 20th Sturminster Newton Half Marathon in ideal running conditions.
Steven Way of Bournemouth AC finished first in 1:11:16, followed by three of his team mates. Ian Habgood in 1:13:16, Ian White (MV40) in 1:16:32 and Simon Munro in 1:17:01.
In the ladies’ race the winner was Jenny Moore (FV45) of Wells City Harriers in a time of 1:24:38, followed by Caroline Hewitt (FV35) of Tiverton Harriers and Sian Thomas of Chiltern Harriers. The first male team, not surprisingly, was Bournemouth AC, with Winchester & District AC winning the ladies’ race.
The 5k race was started by Molly Sherwood-Taylor, in full wedding dress, who lives on the start line and was on her way to her wedding. The 57 finishers were led home by 18 year old James Share of Poole Runners, (race no. 366) in 17:44 and the first lady was 13 year old Sharon Hutchings from Wimborne AC, (race no. 381) in a time of 22:20.
Comments from runners included…
“The best small half marathon ever - and on every occasion I've done it. Even the walk to the start is scenic (if one keeps ones eyes open) with the ancient carved contours of Hambledon Hill forming the backdrop. The race organisation itself oozes friendliness and there are always nice touches. Not one year the same - this time I even got a hug from one of a group of peacenik hippies handing out drinks ....and at the end water, slices of orange, cake - what more could you want. London, Paris and Berlin just can't compare”.
“Really enjoyed the day, directions to event complete with route for run and race facts arrived with number, I managed to lose my directions but the race website was packed with info (including an incline chart which helped me prepare for the hill at the end). Plenty of water and sponge stops, local supporters cheering you on and hosing you down from their gardens and everybody friendly and happy.Children's races and a 5km kept my family occupied while they waited for me to haul myself round the route, brilliant, once again everybody happy! Lovely 1/2 mile to the finish and cake, t-shirt and oranges once completed, thank you very much Dorset Doddlers and Sturminster Newton.”
“Very scenic race through the North Dorset countryside, very well organised. A big thank you to all the marshals and volunteers. There seemed to be so many, and the fancy dress on the numerous water stations was a nice touch. Tricky one for a pb, as there are so many hills (some would say undulating) including the nasty one at the 11.5 mile mark, saying that, I still managed a pb, just. Nice T-shirt and cake at the finish as well. Will be back next year!”
“My first half marathon and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was well organised with plenty of water stations and friendly marshals. Having read comments here from last years runners beforehand I was a little worried about the 'killer hill' at the end. I was still waiting for it as I crossed the finishing line! I guess it depends on what you are used to training wise (I live in a hilly area) so you needn't be put off by this mountain out of a molehill!”

Jane Tomlinson’s York 10K
World Cup winning legend Sir Geoff Hurst started the 5,000 runners from York’s Knavesmire. Champion jockey Richard Dunwoody and Yorkshire-born model Nell McAndrew were among the thousands of runners.
First across the finish line was Ben Livesey in 32min 2secs, and the first female was Karen Hallas in 37min 4secs. The wheelchair race was won by Brett Crossley in 35mins.
This year’s York 10K features an improved course, taking in even more of York’s spectacular city highlights than in 2009.
The York 10K, in its second year, started and finished at York Racecourse and took runners into the city centre, along the historic streets, past the stunning York Minster and back along the riverside.
The course also included taking participants along part of York City Walls and through the historic entrance to Micklegate and also past the landmark Clifford’s Tower.
As with all Run For All events, the event was open to people of all abilities whether they prefer to run, walk, wheel or jog and all event profits go to charity.
Jane Tomlinson’s York 10K is a not-for-profit event. The partner charities are: Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Martin House Children’s Hospice, Macmillan Cancer Support; Sparks; and COCO, the international healthcare and education charity set up by Steve Cram.
The Jane Tomlinson’s York 10K team would like to thank the City of York Council, Asics, Logistik, Lucozade, Morisson Utility Services, BBC Radio York, and The Press, and all the volunteers for their ongoing support.
The 2011 Jane Tomlinson’s York 10K will take place on Sunday 31st July, to pre-register please email york2011@runforall.com

Milland Valley Trail Race
The field for the eleventh, Liss Runners organised, Milland Valley trail race was down from the record breaking 418 finishers of last year. There were still 359 brave souls who successfully completed the tough tracked course around the hills and valleys surrounding the Village of Milland on the Sussex – Hampshire border. Several weeks of dry weather had dried the course off compared to last year’s mud bath. The day was also dry with sunny periods but mostly cloud cover, giving shaded and humid conditions.
From the start, two Denmead Striders ran off together, quickly gained a lead on the rest of the field. Julian Manning managed to pull ahead of a tiring Nick Baker near to the four-mile marker to strongly complete the 13 mile course in 1 hour 22 minutes and 12 seconds to take overall victory and 1st senior male. Baker limited his losses to only just over 2 minutes to take second and 1st male veteran category. Unattached James Thompson took 3rd overall in 1 hour 29 minutes and 7 seconds.
The top three ladies were much closer with Farnham Runners’ Gabriela Hitchcock managing to out sprint first lady veteran Rebecca Black, from Dorking and Mole Valley A.C., by only 9 seconds to take overall ladies victory and 1st senior ladies category in 1 hour 44 minutes and 55 seconds. Team-mate of Hitchcock, Emma Whittaker, was only 21 seconds behind Black to take 3rd overall lady and 2nd senior ladies prize.

Idle Trail Race
The 6th Idle Trail Race attracted a field of 278 runners. This popular, well organised race is now an established race in the running fixture list with runners, including running legend Ron Hill, coming from all over the North of England to take part.

The scenic course offered something for everyone - a flat towpath section at the start, a middle section with some hills, quiet paths & tracks and a downhill section at the end - and with a slightly overcast day the weather conditions were perfect. The event in the stunning grounds of woodhouse Grove School included homemade cakes & refreshments with proceeds going to the charity –Yorkshire Cancer Research. All runners received a bottle of Idle Trail Race beer….brewed by Ilkley Brewery in celebration of Yorkshire Day!!
Race Director, Davina Smith said “The race went really well and I’d really like to thank all those who took part, the marshals who provided fantastic support and our sponsors, Up and Running, Market Town Taverns & Paul Verity Opticians – who provided designer sun glasses for the winners. What better way to celebrate Yorkshire Day than running a scenic 10k race, knowing that you have supported a local charity then celebrating with a Yorkshire Day Beer”.
The race was won in a time of 36.04 by Colin Walker from Pudsey & Bramley with Karen Pickles from Pudsey Pacers picking up the women’s trophy in a time of 39.34. Men’s team winners were Pudsey & Bramley, and Horsforth Harriers were Female Team Winners.
