Buud wins Swissalpine marathon once again
Saturday July 31, 2010
Jonas Buud from Sweden is the first athlete to win the Swissalpine Marathon for the fourth time in its 25-year history. On Saturday he completed the course of 78 kilometres with 2,320 metres altitude difference in 5:49:11 hours, running under excellent conditions. The former orienteering athlete left the co-favourite Thomas Lorblanchet from France, who was participating in the classic mountain race for the first time, in second place with a clear lead of 15:24 minutes. Jean-Yves Rey from Crans-Montana took third place (19:48 behind), after coming second last year.

The women’s race over the grand distance of 78 km was dominated by the Swiss: Jasmin Nunige won for the third time after 2005 and 2008 in 6:39:25 hours. Maja Meneghin-Pliska (Vermes) took second place, with Corinne Zeller (Weissenburg) coming third. With 5910 entrants in all eight contests (including the Mini race) the Swissalpine marathon enjoyed a record number of participants in this anniversary year.
