A weekend of course records (and almost World records!) - part one of our weekend review!
Sunday 4th July, 2010
Wimbledon Windmilers Jim Braben Memorial 10K
The Wimbledon Windmilers 10K was the biggest sporting event in Wimbledon on Sunday, at least in terms of number of participants. On a very warm morning the race attracted nearly 300 runners on a course that took in much of Wimbledon Common. The race was won in a course record time of 32:09 by Paul Martelletti of Victoria Park Harriers. Paul had been locked in battle with eventual runner-up Jamal Mohamed of Victoria & Tower Hamlets for the first 1500 metres before Paul moved into a clear lead which he never relinquished, with Jamel finishing in 33:47. Last year's winner Phil Kilingley was third in 34:40.

In the women's race, Emily Mcnally of home club Wimbledon Windmilers was first in 41:31, followed closely by Meriel Holden, who was also the first female vet. Jess Anstee, also of Wimbledon Windmilers was third in 43:24.
The race was in aid of the Wimbledon Guild, this year's chosen charity and it is hoped that around £2000 will have been raised on the day.
The race was lucky enough to have a number of local sponsors, including Tri & Run, ForGoodnessShakes, RGActive.com, Rubino’s, Nuffield Health and The Telegraph pub who all supported the race.

Back in a Flash 5k
Nearly 200 runners turned up for the second of a series of 3 Back in a Flash 5k races organised by Grass Roots Events throughout the summer at Coate Water Country Park. Race organisers Steve and Julie Goulding were pleased with the turn out for the event on Wednesday on what proved to be good running conditions on a warm and sunny evening. The race attracted local club runners along with a host of first timers tackling their first ever race.
Competition was fierce between Swindon Harriers, Swindon Striders and Highworth, with the Team prizes being split between Swindon Harriers who clinched the Men's Team prize and Swindon Striders who took the Ladies Team.
The course starts inside Coate Water Country Park, with the runners following a footpath out of the park onto the cycle track (route 45) towards Chiseldon. After a mile they then had to tackle the locally known 'whirly bridge' over the M4. This is then followed by a slight upward gradient to the halfway point where they then turn a 360 degree turn to retrace their steps back to the finish.
Simon Nott from John Bentley School set a new course record beating, Swindon Harriers Gary O'Brien by 8 seconds. Heath Bampton, running for Bristol & West finishing third in 17.05. First Lady, Meredith Grimsley of Highworth RC finished in a time of 20.12 over a minute ahead of second place, Hazel Anderson of Chissy Chasers and third place Caroline Mcbeth of Swindon Striders.

The Male Junior prize went of course to Simon Nott, still only 16 years of age with last months winner, Alex Bampton of Swindon Harriers finishing second closely followed by fellow team mate, Matthew Raymond in a time of 18.19. The junior female category was won by Jemma Storey of Highworth RC in a time of 24.43.
After the event the prize giving was held in the Sun Inn. Run Swindon donated a free pair of running trainers which was raffled at the prize giving.
The series continues with the final Back in a Flash on 28th July. A great way to track your running progress throughout the summer. This month also sees the start of The Barbury Castle races - two 5 mile trail Races held on Thursday's at 7.30pm dates July 15th and August 19th. All abilities are very welcome.

Silver Valley/Ras Cwm Arian 10K
The Ras Cwm Arian/Silver Valley 10k is a small village event that was started in 2004, to help with funds to try and save the school. The school committee took the case to court, then lost the court case - we continued the run to help to pay for the court costs. They then purchased the school, and now need all the funds they can to help keep it going.

The route start's with two laps of the school field, about 800/900 mtrs, out onto the road, down hill to about 1.3/4 miles, slight hill, down again and undulating until 3.1/4 miles, then up a 25% plus hill, down a farm track, through a quarry, past the 4 mile marker, 500 mtrs down hill on road, then along an old railway track, to just before 5 miles, then up hill, an very old farm track, through the farm and even more mud and track, one lap of the school field to the finish.
Only 35 runners turned up, proberly because of the bad weather. The winner Lee Ladd, is an up and coming young Welsh runner.

Shifnal 'Steeplechase' Half-Marathon
Club runners from throughout the Midlands ran the Shifnal Steeplechase Half Marathon on Sunday. (July 4). The race which was organised by staff and pupils from Idsall School in Shifnal attracted nearly 200 entries to raise money for charity.
Race director Gareth Morgan, teacher at Idsall School, said: “ Once again there were only positive comments from the runners, from serious club runners to those for who completing the thirteen miles is a real challenge. It is anticipated that close to £1000 will be raised for charity with the main beneficiary being Hope House.”
Dave Mansbridge of the Telford Athletic Club won the race with a time of 1hour 17 minutes and four seconds. He was pleased with his run as he paced himself well and finished strongly. Telford Athletic Club was well represented with the runner up being Robin Sedman-Smith. Third was Wayne Dashper and the first female home was Claire Martin also of Telford Athletic Club.
The half marathon began in 2004 and has grown each year with runners travelling from across the area to take part. Mr Morgan added: “We attract runners from a variety of clubs but also individual runners who enjoy the scenic route of the course.”
The multi terrain course began in Shifnal and followed the steeples of churches in Ryton, Beckbury and Kemberton before returning to the finish at Idsall School. The race is normally run on one of the hottest days of the year whereas this year runners said running into the wind was more of a problem.
Runners were encouraged throughout the course by volunteers who helped to marshal and at water stations.

In photos – Claire Martin (188) of Telford Athletic Club who was first female runner. Lead runners are Robin Sedman-Smith (3) closely followed by Dave Mansbridge (5) the eventual winner - both of Telford Athletic Club.
