The 3M Newton Aycliffe 10km

Fathers Spend their Day on the Run!

What a way to spend Father’s Day! Many people gathered in Newton Aycliffe for the annual 10k and Fun Run Event. Now in it’s 13th year, this fast and flat 3-lap course on the outskirts of Newton Aycliffe still attracted hundreds of runners. With the route accurately measured and clearly marked, many spectators turned out to cheer on the runners during the warm Sunday morning.

The 3M Newton Aycliffe 10km

Left to right: Start of the 10k race (top) and the fun run (below); Lucy Postle, 2nd girl in the fun run; William Crossen and Henry Johnson - 1st and 2nd in the fun run; 10k start.

First race of the day was the 3K Fun Run. The youngsters and their families were taken round the course by lead bike, George Reid, a coach from NAAC. The gently undulating course took the children through woodland and underpasses. Motivation was given from the marshals and the winner, William Crossen, (u16) crossed the line in 11.37. He was running second claim for NAAC along with fellow runner Henry Johnson, (u13) a pleasing run with second place in 12.09. The boys were closely followed by Ross Lathan in 12.15. First girl over the line was Bridie Grayson with 15.06 (u13) and attacking the field was Lucy Postle (u10) with 2nd place in 16.00. Third girl place was taken by Megan Woodward (u10) with 17.14. All the 279 runners enjoyed a bumper filled goodie bag and a t shirt to mark the occasion, with the final runner crossing the line in 37.20, Matthew Cowling (u10).

With a 10am commencement, the competitors for the 10k, had opportunity to walk across from Greenfield School car park, to the start line just off Burn Lane. The race was underway with a few words from Race Director, Trevor Needham, and they were off to a fast and furious start. Taking a strong lead from the beginning were runners from North York Moors AC and Leeds City AC. The 3 lap course proved an ideal setting for many to gain a PB. Craig Robinson (Senior Men) and Ronnie Pluck (Vet 60) made their debut at the 10k distance. Running for NAAC, they achieved 55.13 and 1.02 respectively.

The race was won by seasoned athlete James Bulman, NYM AC, (Senior Men) in 32.30, followed by Mike Burrett, Leeds City AC, (Sen Men), in 32.34, and closely followed by Aidan Adams (Sen Men) 33.38, also Leeds City AC. First lady to cross the line was Aiveen Fox (Sen Lady) with a wonderful time of 38.05, trying to narrow the gap on the 3rd lap, but coming in just behind, was Carolyn Summersgill, Middlesbrough and Cleveland Harriers, (Sen Lady) with 38.16. Third lady home was Louise Noble from Sunderland Strollers with 38.31. All the competitors enjoyed a well deserved t shirt and goodie bag sponsored by 3M from Newton Aycliffe. Refreshments went down a storm and many fathers’s seemed to enjoy their day. Thank you to all the race organisers and those people behind the scenes without whom the race would have been so successful.

Other results for Newton Aycliffe AC included James Askew 34.44 (5th) , Floyd Jones 37.10, Dan Inglis 38.51,Michelle Scott, 44.26, David Thompson 50.55, Gareth Richardson 55.59,

JHGS PA 10K (and 5K)The first JHGSPA 5k & 10k multi terrain runs were held in blustery conditions at West Wycombe Park.

The courses were set on private land in the Chiltern Hills, so presented the runners with a challenging hilly course but with great views of the hills and the mansion. 86 runners too part in this new event.

Despite the hills the times were fantastic and there was an exciting battle for 2nd place in the men's 10k which ended in a tie.

Spearpoint Guernsey "Fathers Day" Half Marathon

Warm sunny conditions, slight headwind for opening 10 miles turning to slight tailwind for last 2.

In his local event Lee Merrien confimed his preparations for the Barcelona European Championship marathon are on schedule with a solo 64:54 win in warm conditions while Ben Moreau eased to a comfortable second place in 67:41.

London based Australian Fraser Thompson got the race off to sprightly start with a 4:50 opening mile but Merrien took control just before the race hit 2 miles and then ran a succession of 5 minute miles into the slight headwind to go through 10 miles in 49:42 before taking advantage of the wind at his tail to close with two 4:52 miles.

Moreau, who finished one place and two seconds ahead of Merrien with his 11th placing in the 2010 London Marathon, appeared to be treating the event as a training and cruised to a comfortable second, with Thompson third.

Bronwyn McNeill-Rogers, who is restricted to the small (barely 2 sq. miles) Isle of Sark for her training, ran strongly in the closing stages to clock 82:18 and hold off Martine Scholes to lead the women in.

Andree Reece-Sheerin set a new wheelchair record of 82 minutes 22 seconds, taking 4 minutes off his own previous record for the course. He was the only wheelchair competitor.

Wicksteed Midsummer Race

The inaugural Ultramarathon organised run at Wicksteed Park in Northamptonshire took place on 20th June 2010. The weather was slightly breezy but with ideal temperatures for a run through the picturesque leisure park that was set up by Charles Wicksteed in 1913. The field was small and friendly but with a keen competitive spirit. First timers and old timers were made to feel equally welcome as the runners gathered for the 11.30am start. The 2.5km course set off initially downhill and proceeded to follow an undulating route.

The gun went precisely on time and the runners, sped off initially downhill before turning right to follow the narrow gauge railway. The runners puffed in unison with the little steam locomotive as it trundled along the tracks though it wasn’t long before the runners turned away from the railway lines to complete a lap of the fishing lake and headed off around the perimeter of the Wicksteed site. A picnic type atmosphere developed at the start/finish line as supporting families tucked into ice cream and cheered their now sweaty runners on as the completed lap after lap.

Wicksteed Summer Races

The first across the 5km finish line after 23 minutes and 56 seconds was 1605 Caylum Young who was delighted to beat his mother, 1606 Lisa Beaney, for the second week in a row though she was close on his heels gaining a respectable second place in 25.25. Their 10km counterparts quickly totted up more laps headed by the steady running 2041, Jon Goodwin who was cheered by his wife and children. Jon took first place in just 40.03 and looked set to start another lap before turning back to receive his medal and winners prize. 31 seconds later 2012, Stephen Smith completed his 10km almost two minutes ahead of third placed man 1607 Joe Lovell of Eye Community Runners which was a great result for the club.

Lloyd Clark, Race Director said of the event ‘Ultramarathon organise 5km and 10km races at venues across Northamptonshire and we are very pleased with the way our first run at Wicksteed went, though credit should really go to the fantastic runners who made the event so special. We would also like to thank Gemma Nunley of Wicksteed Leisure for being so supportive of creating a series of running events at Wicksteed and to Welcome Photography for providing runners photos at the event.

Anyone wishing to enter future races at Wicksteed on 17th October 2010 and 1st January 2011 will find full details at www.ultramarathon.org.uk.’

North Downs Run

The Mayor of Gravesham, councillor Bill Lambert, started the 27th running of the ever popular North Downs Run. Consistently voted amongst the most popular races in the UK, the race starts and finishes at Cascades Leisure Centre in Gravesend, where runners can take advantage of a free swim after completing the run. This year’s race saw a record of 476 runners complete the challenging 30km course.

North Down Run

The weather for this year’s run was ideal, being slightly overcast, though it became a bit warmer during the latter stages. Race organisers, Istead and Ifield Harriers, are grateful to all local clubs and friends for their continuing support for this race which, being run over some remote parts of the North Downs, requires a great deal of marshalling and support.
