EXCLUSIVE: Hot launch from Saucony

by David Castle
Tuesday 16th March 2010

This is the first look in the UK at the new Kinvara from Saucony which is being hailed as a “barefoot shoes for the masses”.

The idea is that it provides the same cushioning as the ProGrid Triumph (in fact, it has even more cushioning in the forefoot), yet is over 100g lighter.

“The idea of ‘barefoot for the masses’ is a recognition that the minimalist shoe brigade are out there,” says Saucony. “The combination of the lightweight, flexible midsole and the monomesh upper is intended to make you feel as if you are running without shoes.”

The brands says the Kinvara is “the epitome of minimalism”:  the Kinvara’s ProGrid LITE unit is only 20% of the thickness of normal ProGrid. But this is definitely a training shoe, rather than a racing shoe, and it has been tested by typical runners over 400+ miles.

Anyone who knows their shoe technology will notice a return to the traditional Saucony Triangular lugs, which again form part of the cushioning system, as well as providing a more durable outsole as they are carbon tipped.

Running fitness editor David Castle said: "This shoe looks pretty experimental. It's unlikely to silence hardcore barefoot protagonists, but for the rest of us, it could be a useful alternative. We can't wait to try it!"
