Iron Girl

Race preview: Iron Girl London 5km & 10km Run - September 9, 2012

WTC (World Triathlon Corporation), organisers of the global Ironman Series today announced the launch of the UK’s first Iron Girl event. Offering a 5km and 10km road run, the event will take place in the stunning setting of London’s Richmond Park on Sunday 9th September.

Targeting women of all ages and levels of ability, Iron Girl London will incorporate a one lap 5km or 10km course that winds its way throughout the beautiful surroundings of the Royal Park on closed roads, offering a traffic free and tarmac road run.

With Ironman (2.4m swim, 112m bike 26.2m run) renowned for being one of the world’s toughest sporting events, it attracts an average of just 10% female competitors; in contrast Iron Girl’s mission is to empower all women towards a healthy lifestyle, whatever their age and level of ability. With this in mind, the event promises to provide a fun, competitive platform as well as providing lots of women specific goodies including a post race t-shirt, finisher medal and much more.

The Iron Girl London run will be part of a great sporting day for all the family in Richmond Park on Sunday 9th September, which already attracts some 3,000 competitors for the London Duathlon, a run-bike-run event, as well as an ‘Iron Kids’ event, for the younger members of the family aged 3 - 14. In addition the Park provides a perfect day out for spectators; amongst its 2,500 acres it is home to some of the capital’s most varied and colourful wildlife including 650 free roaming deer.

Kevin Stewart, Managing Director of Ironman in Britain commented, “We are very excited to be staging the UK’s first Iron Girl event in Richmond Park. With Iron Girl and Iron Kids races now being part of the day, there really is a distance and event to suit everyone and the opportunity to get the whole family involved, with many also fundraising for our official charity Macmillan Cancer Support”.

Alternatively for those women looking for slightly more of a challenge than the Iron Girl 5km or 10km run, they can choose from a number of different race distances for the run-bike-run event either as an individual or in a relay team. Regardless of age, fitness or personal goals this is very much a fun day out to be enjoyed by all the family.
