West Down 10km

The weather for the West Down Fun Run & 10k was all too typical of this dreadful summer. West Down is a small village in North Devon and for some years has been holding the races in conjunction with a village fair, but most of this had to be cancelled because it was impossible to keep gazebos on the ground.

This event has been building up over the last few years and the numbers held up in spite of the appalling conditions. The deep Devon lanes gave some protection from the howling gale - the village is 150 metres above sea level & the route went up to above 200m where there is no respite from the Atlantic gales. The road race is run over a little more than 10k and is over an undulating course with one particularly steep stretch.

Runners were mostly local but the winner of the 10mk road race, Mark Searle, came from Bristol and trains with Bitton Road Runners. Some entrants were from further afield – one even from Scotland.

The winner of the 4.5k fun run was Evee May Banbury from Winkleigh. Evee is 12 & trains with North Devon Athletic Club in Braunton.

Long Eaton 50 ultra and relay

Long Eaton 50 ultra and relay

Downpours and thunderstorms on the previous day made for testing conditions along the 51 mile circular route around Derby. Times in general were an hour or so slower than last year due to the navigational difficulties and slippery terrain. The route includes a mixture of canal towpath, cycle track, some road and a majority of field footpath and tracks, based on the Derby Nomads way.

At the halfway point it was clear that the Ultra would be contested by two people in each of the gender groups. Tom Adams had a three minute lead over Pete Stockdale, but the latter had the advantage of having run the course last year. For the ladies Sal Chaffey had about five minutes on Heather Pike, but she was running unaccompanied whereas Heather was in a pair.

In the relay Holme Pierrepont A had an early lead, which they never lost throughout the day although Redhill closed the gap in the later stages.

Pete Stockdale held on to take the men’s race in 8 hours and 43 minutes with Tom three minutes adrift. Heather Pike was the first woman in 10 hours and 38 minutes, some 25 minutes ahead of Sal Chaffey.

Completing the course was a success in itself, but 25 of the 26 starters managed to do it. The finishers retired to the Navigation Inn for their soup and a welcoming pint.

Bendrigg 10K

Bendrigg 10K

Despite the inclement weather 91 runners completed the 2012 Bendrigg 10km, with another 29 children and four adults in the fun run.

The route for the Bendrigg 10km was re-measured this year (after 20years) and as a result the start was moved further back than in previous years. Due to this change, the winners set a 'new' course record.

Hence race winner Danny Parkinson now holds the men’s course record and Claire Bunce the women’s. This is the seventh year that Danny has won! Paul Muller (another great supporter of Bendrigg) has been in the top 4 positions since 2007.

Red Rose Road Runners took away both team prizes.

Cheddar Gorge 10km

Relish Running Races' inaugural Cheddar Gorge 10km was a huge success, with over 150 runners enjoying the stunning views and challenging course. This was no mean feat… the mountain-like terrain involved huge climbs including the dreaded steps that are yet to be mastered as a one-step challenge. The course takes in the incredible scenery of Cheddar Gorge, with panoramics stretching to the Severn Bridges and beyond. With twisted wooded trails, speedy flat sections to enjoy the view and a glorious final kilometre descent, there was something to suit everyone.

Cheddar Gorge 10km

Photo: Mass start with stunning views over Cheddar

Ross MacDonald sprinted home in under 40 minutes, a feat the organisers didn’t feel possible, with Joanne Gallagher leading home the women’s field. Bill Thompson and Liz Green each won their over 60 categories, an impressive effort especially given their efforts on behalf of the National Trust in helping prepare the course on Friday. The Ridley-Rundle family, with 55 years between oldest and youngest, perfectly demonstrated the family nature of Relish Running series events. As always, the kids’ race was very popular, with a sprint through Strawberry Fields, well supported by a cheering crowd.

The race wouldn’t have been possible without the wonderful support over the past few months of Mark Courtiour and all his National Trust volunteers, as well as the Avon and Somerset Search and Rescue team, headed by Jim Hardcastle. Many thanks to RunningHome, Thrive and O2 Creation for providing great post-race goodies.

Relish Running Races look forward to you joining us in Cheddar on the 8th July for the half-marathon (or 10km if you fancy an easy one!) and on the 9th September for the immense challenge of the 1st Cheddar Gorge Marathon.

Alresford 10km and Fun Runs

The weather was perfect for running at this year's Alresford 10k and Fun Runs. The skies were clear and the breeze eased to allow the runners to enjoy the Hampshire countryside at its best. The races followed the tried and tested format of the park races for the children preceding the main 10k event. The shorter 4k fun run set off 20 minutes after the 10k, allowing the runners to join up on the course and head back to the finish together.

The 10k attracted a record field, with over 270 runners taking to the roads through the town, past the watercress beds and out over the rolling hills (too rolling some were herd to say...) . Toby Lambert took time out from minding the Alton Sports store to win the men's race in a new course record time of 32.52 and Kathy Bailey won the women's race, also setting a new course record of 38.38. The rest of the field was close behind with some excellent performances across the board. The winners received cash prizes whilst the other age category winners took home prizes from local businesses, including beer from Itchen Valley Brewery, goodies from Long Barn and champagne from the local Coop.

The children's races, organised by Sun Hill Junior School PTA, were as popular as ever and provided great entertainment as those under 7 took on one lap of the park with those under 11 doing 2 laps. The winners all received family tickets to the Watercress Line and a trophy for their efforts.

The main sponsors for the event were Propect Fencing, The Naked grape and the Holiday Inn Winchester. Sarah Waddington from the Holiday Inn was on hand to present the prizes and to watch her husband take part in his first ever 10k.

Toad Hall 10k

Toad Hall 10k

The Toad Hall 10k is a lovely, hilly affair, run mostly off-road in the beautiful village of Whitchurch Hill in Berkshire. The route takes you through beech woods, along picturesque footpaths, up some testing hills, and finishes on the village green. The selection of cake available at the finish was simply stunning. A highly recommended race for those interested in scenic courses and high quality post-race refreshments. The winner, Quinten Kearns, set a new course record of 35.19 by around 3 minutes.

Huntingdon 10k Charity Run

At least £8000 have been raised for local childrens' charities by the third Huntingdon 10k Charity Run on Fathers' Day.

Race Director Bob Hulstrom said: "With the added attractions of the 3k Fun Run and a community fair for the first time this year, more people than ever enjoyed this year's event at Alconbury Airfield Enterprise Zone site, which was a great success.

A total of 557 people crossed the 10k finish line and 151 finished the 3k Fun Run. The event was organised by local club Hullabaloo.

The six charities set to benefit from all the profits from the event are: Disability Huntingdonshire, Riverside Theatre Company, Huntingdon Youth Theatre, the Fusion programme, the Crossroads Young Carers' Project in Huntingdon and Dreamdrops.

Runners, spectators and many others also enjoyed the attractions of the community fair, including the chance to meet Leicester Tigers rubgy premiership stars Craig Newby and Jordan Crane who joined race sponsors Flex-Able for the day. Former Prime Minster and local MP Sir John Major, who gave his personal backing to the event, was also spotted supporting runners out on the course.

All 3k Fun Run finishers received a medal and every 10k finisher received a goodie bag that included a medal, race programme and a pot of Italian hard cheese donated by main race sponsors, Cook Italian. The two winning teams received a hamper of Cook Italian products.

A short warm-up for 10k runners was led by former Marine Steve Plunkett, Fitness Director of newly established gym, Personal Fit, based at Buckden Waterside Marina.

Bob added; " The feedback has been really positive and many people are keen to commit to next year's race already. It is great that so many people recorded personal best race times on the course, despite a strong head wind for the last kilometre of the race. I am delighted that property company Urban and Civic, which donated our race venue, has already agreed to host the event in future years. Planning to make next year's event even bigger and better will start soon."
