Race news: Ennerdale trail race - Sunday, October 21, 2012

High Terrain Events have announced details for a new 50k (31.1m) ultra distance event at the Ennerdale trail race on Sunday 21st October. As the final race in the 2012 Salomon Trail Tour and with distances of 10k and 25k already scheduled, this promises to be a great event, whether you are a seasoned distance runner or looking to compete in your first ultra.

Ennerdale trail race - Sunday, October 21, 2012

Set in a remote valley on the western fringes of the Lake District National Park, Ennerdale is a truly spectacular location for trail running with a fantastic combination of trails in a unique natural environment. It is an enclosed valley surrounded by some of the Lake Districts most iconic mountains; Great Gable, Pillar and Haystacks, providing a natural backdrop full of dramatic ridges and wooded slopes.

The 50k course will be two 25k circuits encompassing the whole valley, ranging from stunning lakeshore trails around Ennerdale Water to the more remote forest tracks stretching into the heart of the valley. Although no major climbs are encountered, there is a total ascent of 920' per circuit which is sure to test resolve.

The first section of the course is on well surfaced gravel trails along the lakeshore, before climbing steadily along the main forest road to the head of the valley to reach the iconic Black Sail youth hostel.

This is the high point of the route at nearly 900' and set amidst some of the finest breathtaking fell scenery. The route then crosses the river Liza, returning along the forest trails set beneath the stunning backdrop of Pillar Rock. A rocky and technical section then follows the southern shore of Ennerdale Water which includes a short exposed scramble around Anglers Crag, to complete the first circuit. Enjoy some refreshments at the finish area before setting out to repeat this amazing experience once again!

All of the courses will be well marked throughout so no navigation skills are necessary. Facilities include well stocked feed and drink stations, refreshments at finish, event photography, event memento for all finishers, free event parking, showers, and changing. Onsite camping will be available or there is also the opportunity for bunk style accommodation at the venue.
