Shaw Stampede 10km

One hundred and ten runners lined up for the seventh running of the Shaw Stampede and Keane Kanter fun run organised by Avon Valley Runners and Stampede Sports.

In the 10-Kilometer Stampede the runners tackled some of the most technical and picturesque terrain in the area, as they passed along the bridle paths and country lanes around the village of Shaw near Melksham in Wiltshire. First home in a time of thirty seven minutes and ten seconds was Stuart Henderson of Corsham Running Club who was nearly two minutes ahead of second placed Chris Hall of Stubbington Green Runners and David Wright of Cirencester AC.

In 6th place Richard Morgetroyd of the host club claimed the 1st MV40 prize and led his club mates to the mixed team prize at the event. Unattached runner Andrew Vaudin from Marshfield was the 1st MV50.

In the ladies race Denise Grech of Calne took victory in 45:19 ahead of Zoe Ecclestone from Whitley and Amy Bentley from Malmesbury. Debbie Taylor of Fareham Crusaders claimed the 1st FV40 prize and Diane Aldridge the 1st FV50.

Halewood 5k

The Halewood 5k is organised by a committed team from Knowsley Harriers. So it was rather fitting that this weeks race was won by Knowsley Harriers Club Captain Mark Clair in a very impressive solo run 16:32, just outside his own club record and personal best. It won't be long until he lowers this time further.

Deestriders Running Club based in North Wales have supported the race since it was first started, and one of their members Steve Hayes ran a great race to finish in second place in 17:41. In 3rd place was yet another Knowsley Harrier Kev Brown who is improving with each race.

The ladies competition had a clear winner in Charlotte Wilson of Liverpool Harriers, she ran a fantastic time of 19:28. The next placed lady to finish was April Morgan (St Helens Striders) in 2nd position, with Mary Kelly not far behind in third. Well done and thank you for all the runners who turned out in our event, and we look forward to welcoming you and new runners in future weeks.

The Halewood 5k takes place again on Saturday at 1pm, this is a free of charge event with complimentary fruit at the finish. The results are also available on the Power of 10 website.

Brathay Windermere Marathon and Brathay 10 in 10 Challenge - Sunday, May 20, 2012

The Brathay Windermere Marathon was a resounding success with nearly 800 runners setting off at 10.30am. Mike Jefferies came in first with an impressive time of 02:45:30 whilst in the women’s event last year’s winner, Nicola Shaw, came home first again in 03:15:48.

Second and third placed men were Peter Stockdale at 02:51:51and Paul Davies at 02:52:26. Second and third placed women were Mel Rotherham at 03:13:27 and Kathleen Aubrey at 03:21:16.

In the final day of the Brathay 10 in 10 challenge Sally Ford, from Kirkby Lonsdale, battled through the pain barrier yesterday to become the first women to win, despite the inconvenience of shin splints and ankle problems. She clocked off with a final marathon time of 03:38:02 making her total aggregate time 36:38:53, a staggering 2hrs and 39 minutes quicker than the previous women’s record.

She was delighted just to have finished, after such an injury, and despite her humility throughout the challenge, she displayed just a little pride today, after it was pointed out that she had finished ahead of the boys. “There’s been a bit of banter through the week and the lads keep saying they’ve been ‘chicked’. But it’s all been in good humour and the fact that I’ve posted the best time does give me a sense of pride.”

But perhaps the bigger story to come out of this year’s 10in10 event is the fact that all 18 runners completed challenge, proving beyond doubt that ordinary people can do extraordinary things.

Lee Valley 10k and Fun Run

Although a fairly miserable weather morning, the rain stayed away and the steel band raised spirits in River Lee Country Park, on the Essex/Hertfordshire boarder.

The flat and fast 10k course through scenic parklands and across waterways and lakes provided an ideal race for all abilities.

The Olympic Lee Valley White Water Centre, host to the canoe slalom events in the London 2012 Games, provided a great backdrop for the finishing runners and GB canoeist and Olympic silver medallist, Campbell Walsh was on hand to start the race and hand out prizes.

National Trust Trail Running Series - Borrowdale Trail Run

National Trust Trail Running Series - Borrowdale Trail Run

The sun was shining again for the second in the 2012 National Trust Trail Running Series. The Borrowdale Trail Run was run in conjunction with the Keswick Mountain Festival which meant that on race day the start venue was bustling with outdoor enthusiasts, from climbers, trail runners and triathletes to cyclists as well as spectators.

The event offered a choice of two distances - 13km and 21km. The start for both was either a short run or a boat ride away on the opposite shore of the lake to registration and the finish. The route for both distances winds along some lovely trails along the lake shore, before the split at the head of Derwentwater, both taking in some challenging climbs and technical tracks from there to the finish. Participants had to decide whether to concentrate on the trails or the stunning views!

Carl Bell stormed home in an impressive 1:24:50 in the 21km race, some 13 minutes ahead of second placed Martin Bateman who crossed the line in 1:37:52. Jules Hatcher took third place in 1:38:19.

Katy Foster took the win in the women's competition ahead of Jen Mattison and Sarah Paradine.

Gareth Green won the 13km event in 58:20 ahead of Tim Gleeson in second in 01:04:41 and Peter Massey took third in 01:06:06. Catherine Faux was the first woman in 01:06:20. She was followed by Claire Fowler in 01:14:31 and Jennifer West in 01:19:20.

The next event in the series is the Ennerdale trail race on October 21, where runners can choose from a 10km and a 25km course. For further details and online entry visit www.highterrainevents.co.uk

Worden Park 10km

Red Rose Road Runners hosted the Worden Park 10km on May 20th. The largely traffic free two lap course attracted 174 runners. Dry and cool conditions helped the participants with the front runners getting away from the field early in the race. Callum Rowett of Preston Harriers and Robert Danson of Wesham passed the three mile point with only a few metres between them but as the race continued Rowett took a decisive lead coming home a minute in front in a time of 34.32. Danson finished in 35.32 with Mike Flatley of Middleton Harriers third in 36.04.

In the ladies race, Joanne Taylor of Lancaster and Morecambe lead at half way but Avril Duckworth of Clayton Hariers was never far away. She took the lead coming home strongly in 40.26 with Joanne second in 40.57. Third place went to Debie Shaw of Middleton Harriers in 44.38.

The day also provided the chance for a group of runners to raise over £2000 for Asthma UK. 24 ladies from Trinity and St Michael’s School had been training for the event to raise money in memory of pupil Harry Cummings who died after suffering an asthma attack whilst at school.

Simon Hughes MP turned out to BE PART OF THE CURE as he attended a charity 5k in Southwark Park which is expected to raise £10,000 for Breast Cancer Campaign.

England rugby sevens star Chris Cracknell and International fitness and lifestyle expert Sarah Maxwell captained teams of Girls and Boys for the fundraising 5k – and also choreographed and led a warm up for the 83 charity runners.

Simon Hughes, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, joined in the warm up and said: “I supported, and people ran Girls vs Boys, to remind others that more than half a million people in this country have breast cancer and 12,000 die from breast cancer every year. However by putting money into research there can be cure. We came [to Southwark Park] for a positive reason – to reduce the pain, reduce the anxiety and have a better future.”
