2012 Lakeland Trails series - Cartmel: 18km Cartmel Trail Race & Sticky Toffee Trail Run 10km

The opening 2012 Lakeland Trails series at Cartmel got off to a great start from Cartmel Racecourse.

The biggest field yet for a Lakeland Trails event, 1300 competitors, took part in the various events from all over the UK with overseas visitors from USA, Sweden, Holland, Germany, Belgium and France.

Batala Lancaster got everyone pumping at the starts with their awesome Brazilian samba drumming. The going was distinctly soft for the course, and everyone had to work hard to earn their "survivor's" T shirts and locally produced sticky toffee puddings. To celebrate St Patrick's Day, there was even cold Guinness at the feed stations for those with Irish blood.

Commonwealth Games Champion, Lizzie Adams, who now lives in Ulverston, broke the 18km women's course record, finishing an incredible fourth place overall. GB International Orlando Edwards, made the long journey from London and won the 18km Cartmel Trail Race comfortably.

The Sticky Toffee Trail Run 10km was won by Chris Barnes, from Blackburn Harriers, and Sarah Ridehalgh, from Accrington Road Runners scooped the first lady's trophy.

A live performance by singer / songwriter Pete Lashley before the prize giving entertained the crowds. The event was supporting the local BAY Search and Rescue charity, along with King George V Playing Field Committee from Allithwaite.

Event sponsors and partners included lifestyle brand PUMA, hydration partner NUUN, Cartmel Racecourse, R and R Photos, Wilson's Kendal Mint Cake, Pete Bland Sports, Trailrunning.co.uk; TrekandRun.com; Sleepmonsters.com, Bay Search & Rescue, King George V Playing Field Committee.

BVAC 5 mile cross-country

This 5-mile cross country race for ages 17 plus on the Surrey/Kent border took place on Mother's Day this year. The weather started bright and sunny but gradually deteriorated and had turned to wind and rain by the presentation of the prizes. The course was firm on the whole but a little greasy due to overnight rain. It was described by one runner as a "Wonderful two loops of a varied cross country course - some flat running on the field and hills in the woods. Pretty dry underfoot and lots of tree roots (and a fallen tree!) to make it worth watching your feet."

2012 BVAC 5 mile cross-country

Apart from first and second male and female, runners were competing for age group prizes (35-49, 50-59 and 60+), host club prizes and a team prize for any three athletes from one club who were not otherwise prize winners. The rule that you could not win a 'lower' category prize if you had won a 'higher' category prize meant things were spread around well.

Variety was indeed the watchword with 11 different clubs being represented in the first 13 places (if you count two unattached runners as being from the same 'club').

Clayton Barrett of Medway & Maidstone was fastest round the course in a fantastic time of 31 minutes 39 seconds for what was measured at slightly over 5 miles. He led from the front and was never in danger of being caught. The second man home, Damien Hersey of Sutton Runners, lagged by more than 3 minutes.

The women were brought home by ultra-marathon runner Jennifer Bradley from the Serpentine club, who also ran there and home again afterwards (it is also understood that she's attempting to become the first lady to run across America, so best wishes to her for that challenge). Gail Arnott of Beckenham Runners took the prize for the second female.

Seven runners of 60 years and over finished the course with BVAC's Chris Marshall top man and the unattached Liz McGeough top lady. In the 50-59 age category the prize winners were Andrew Lawes (Blackheath & Bromley Harriers) and Linda Daniel (Croydon Striders) while in the 35-49 range Richard Taylor (Serpentine) and Jenny Neal (Blackheath & Bromley Harriers) took the honours. The team prize went to Stuart Scott, Andrew Hinds & Ken Baksh of Beckenham Runners.

But it was not all about the faster runners. While participants from 20 recognised clubs took part overall with 33 unattached runners having also been encouraged to 'have a go', some tackling their first race outside of a Saturday morning parkrun. The course limit of 100 runners was not far away this year.

Donations and profits are going to local charity St Christopher's Hospice.

The homemade cakes were first class, as usual. It being Mother's Day, there was a red rose for every female runner. And, since it was St Patrick's Day 24 hours earlier, there was a can of Guinness for each male runner. Of course, some preferred the other way around! A jubilee medal was also received by all. There were umpteen marshals around the course too, so special thanks to them.

Final word goes to one of the runners "Super race with great atmosphere and lovely course."

Glenluce Snail Race

Over 50 adults, teenagers, children and dogs took part in the Glenluce Snail Race on Saturday. On the best day of the year so far, the weather played its part in making the race, advertised as ‘the most scenic 10 km in Britain’, live up to its billing. The Galloway countryside and the waters of Luce Bay looked their stunning best under the blue skies and bright sunshine.

Glenluce Snail Race

First person home was Richard Williams in a time of 43 minutes 28 seconds, while the Snail Prize, for the last to finish, was awarded to the race vet, Scott Hodgson who recorded a time of 2 hours 27 minutes 4 seconds!.

Scott blamed his dog, Amber, a ten year old chocolate Labrador for his time. ‘She deliberately walked slowly in protest at being kept on her lead’.

All those who took part enjoyed teas and home made cakes afterwards. The Snail biscuits with the green icing proving to be the most popular!

Already over £1,700 has been received in donations for the charity ‘Tearfund’.

The event organizers would like to thank all those who took part; those who generously donated to Tearfund; all the people who gave their time to ensure the day was a great success and especially Rhonda Falconer who made it all come together.

The inaugural 'The Spirthill Trail' was a tremendous success.

Ian Scott, running for TriZoo, was first to finish the 5.5km in 25:23:40, setting an Events Logic UK inaugural course record. Ian was delighted to become the first record holder and complete the course in such a good time. He said that, ‘the course is excellent. This was a good run but technically difficult.’

The first female finisher was Emma Satchell who completed the 5.5Km course in 29:39:15. Emma was very excited about becoming the record holder for the women’s event. She said, ‘a tough but great race and well organised for everyone by Events Logic UK’.

The course record, for the 10.5km race was set by Carl Davies (Avon Valley Runners) in 47:27:85. He said the course was ‘really good’. He added that the multi-terrain route was very challenging but he still managed to finish with a big smile! Keeley Spate was the first to finish the 10.5km women’s race in 1:04:24:45. She also managed to complete the course smiling!

Two of our youngest 5.5km competitors were Craig Jordan and Joseph Morrison (both 15 years); completing the course in under 33 minutes! A brilliant run.

A big well done to Maisie McCarthy, who was the first girl to complete the Fun Run, in very nippy 13:12 minutes. Congratulations to all the Fun Runners who easily beat Snappy, the TriZoo ‘Old Croc’!

Event Directors Luke Shipway and Steve Fream, commented on the success ‘We are extremely pleased with how many people turned up for our very first event and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, we feel we have made an impact and cant wait until our next event on April 15th, which is a Duathlon held at Abbeyfield School.’

Halewood 5k

This weekend's Halewood 5k was the day before the Liverpool Half Marathon! So with a lot of people involved in that the day afterwards some people used it as a gentle run before the big day.

Despite this the race was won by James McNally of Penny Lane Striders who completed the course in a fantastic time of 16.14, which is the 2nd fastest time ever ran on the course. In second place was Guy Roberts of Mossley Hill who then completed the Liverpool Half Marathon in 1hr 16 minutes the following day! Just behind Guy in third place was Sion Wynne-Williams (Liverpool Harriers) on his first appearance at the Halewood 5k.

In the women's competition it was Jay Jennions of Deestriders who was the runaway winner in a excellent time of 19.40. This showed an improvement of over 2 mins compared to her last appearance at the Halewood 5k only 6 weeks ago. It was then Joyce Lovatt and Nicola Marron in second and third positions respectively.

The next Halewood 5k takes place on Saturday 24th March at 1pm. All first time runners are encouraged to register for this free of charge event on www.bugruns.org.uk prior to their first run. There will be fruit and refreshments available at the finish. Well done to all those runner who took part last week, and also to anyone who completed the Liverpool Half Marathon.

Liverpool Half Marathon

RunLiverpool held the Half Marathon amid the backdrop of the river Mersey with 7,600 runners warming up towards the main event in October.

The race had yet another brilliant turn out and Olympic legend Kriss Akabusi got the event under way in his own inimitable manner.

Kriss, who was visiting Liverpool specifically to get the 2012 RunLiverpool Marathon message out, was suitably impressed with the turnout saying: "Wow!! What a sensational turnout. I didn’t realise Liverpool had such an enthusiastic running community and the numbers taking part today were wicked. I’ve got to say a massive well done to everyone that took part.”

Olympic Champion Kriss Akabusi welcomes international runners to 'Global City' as the RunLiverpool 2012 marathon is launched

There were just over 6,300 finishers with many chasing the PBs on generally flat course – just one incline at 1.5 miles which most took in their stride basking in the sunshine.

Runners entered from Spain, USA, Mexico, Brazil, Hong Kong and Italy but it was Poland’s Mazerski Bartosz who clinched the winning place timed at 1:08:41.

Hollyoaks stars James Atherton and Tom Scurr took part in the race in support of Centrepoint, a charity that supports homeless young people and vulnerable youths, who helped cast members, develop an ongoing youth homelessness storyline for the local TV soap.

Blind runner James Hughes also took part in what was his astonishing 180th half Marathon lead by his adopted father John Courtney aged 74. Uniquely among blind runners he completes the race by running behind foster dad John, tapping him on the arm to keep him on route.

Among the thousands of spectators was international footballer Wayne Rooney’s wife Coleen Rooney and family, who were there to support her youngest brother Anthony McLoughlin and friend Amy Wilkinson who were running for Cancer research. Coleen said “I’ve never been to a running event before and I’m enjoying the atmosphere with the family. Its such an achievement for everyone taking part and it's great to see so many people come together to raise money for so many charities.”

The event had a huge impact on Liverpool’s visitor economy as commented upon by Labour Councillor Anna Rothery chairperson for culture, tourism and sport select committee who said: "In terms of the visitor economy the event was excellent for the city. The atmosphere was fantastic and there were lots of families here that came to support loved ones and enjoy the activities around the waterfront. I was in the city centre after the race and the bars and restaurants were busy with people spending the rest of the afternoon enjoying the cities offering which is a clear sign of the events excellent impact on the local economy."

Mud and Mayhem 10K

March 18th saw the return of the Mud & Mayhem race format to the original venue in Thetford Forest and with recent rain promising some muddy conditions a fun filled race was eagerly anticipated. The course is a delightful mix of forest running with plenty of opportunity for overtaking, a tough climb in the middle and a beautiful wooden crossing of the Little Ouse at the end of each lap.

Mud and Mayhem 10K - St Helens, Thetford Forest, March 18, 2012

Over 200 runners signed up for only the second Mud & Mayhem trail race in Thetford Forest, a marked increase on the inaugural race and judging by the early feedback we can expect to see this number double in 2013. The run set off along the northern bank of the river before heading into the forest trails on the other side.

Robin Webb set a strong pace to win the 10k race in 38 minutes 19 seconds. The only sub 40 minute time this year testament to the sticky conditions. He was followed home by Vasco Fernandes in second and Stuart Beeston in third In the ladies race Stacey Daniele Owen finished in an impressive 23rd overall to take the ladies trophy with Megan Cabell and Harriet Drewey coming home 2nd and 3rd.

A big thank you to race sponsors BHIP UK (heartratemonitor.co.uk) and The Runner Center, Norwich, Phil Sayers and his team from Extreme Sports Therapy who were on hand to treat tired and weary limbs after the event, official race photographers from Corby Photography who worked tirelessly attempting to be on all parts of the course at all times capturing the race for everyone’s benefit and to all the enthusiastic marshals who give up their weekends so that Go Beyond can put on great races.

And finally….in 2012 the race was not restricted to mere mortals with a special guest appearance from Spiderman and Ironman taking time out from their busy lives saving the planet from evil warlords intent on global domination. Paul Greensides and John Figiel presumably raising money for a good cause decided to dress up for the occasion.

The next chance to race Mud & Mayhem is at the new event at Delapre Abbey on 14th October or why not go longer as part of the Northampton Running Festival on 8th April which offers Marathon and Half Marathon options as well as the fast and flat 10K option.

The sun was shining down on the beautiful Mickleham countryside in the Surrey Hills. There was a bracing chill in the air but nothing was going to put off the adventure racers who had arrived bright and early to take part in Tri-Adventures Sprint & Trail events.

Run Falmouth 2012

330 runners gathered in Falmouth, Cornwall on Sunday to take part in the town's first ever half marathon.

‘Run Falmouth’ organised by local charity Cornwall Hospice Care was part of the towns spring festival, and was well supported by local runners as well as many participants from further up the country.

The spring weather stayed fine for the runners to enjoy the stunning Cornish coastal and countyside scenery along the 13.1 mile route, which took in Pendennis Castle, Gyllyngvase Beach, through to Swanpool and Maenporth beaches. Runners then headed inland to be cheered on as they passed through the villages of Mawnan Smith and Budock Water, before turning back through Penryn and into Falmouth town centre again where they were greeted by well-deserved cheers and refreshments.

Richard Pascoe from Truro was first over the finish line, just over one hour 20 minutes after setting off. "This is the first decent field race that I've won," he said. "I hope to do the London Marathon so this is a bit of a test of how well the training's gone." He added that the hilly course was scenic but tough - but well-wishers lining the route along the way helped to keep him going. "There were lots of people shouting as you went past and giving you a clap. It does spur you on to the top of the hills."

Naomi Tier, also from Truro, was the first woman to complete the course, about five minutes after Mr Pascoe. Also training for the London Marathon, Ms Tier said she had done the Bath Half Marathon last week, but was much happier with her time today. "It was a really good environment," she added. "Lots of people cheering you on."

Karen Holman, from Cornwall Hospice Care, was in charge of the event and said she was delighted with how many people had taken part. "I said at the beginning if we got 100 I'd be pleased. In the end we got about 400." She added that the charity had raised £6,000 from Run Falmouth through registration fees alone, with sponsorship money still to come in. "It's a great contribution to the charity and great in terms of awareness," she said.

Run Garioch Specsavers Half Marathon, 10k & 5k

Runners and spectators were out in force on Sunday for Run Garioch, the seventh annual running event hosted by the Garioch Sports Centre

Weather conditions were perfect as a record 1,300 runners of all ages came to take part in the charity event. Both the Specsavers 10K and the Junior Run were completely full. The 5K and ½ marathon were also very near their increased capacity for 2012.

Run Garioch Specsavers Half Marathon, 10k & 5k

First off their marks were the 300 children participating in the Junior Run. After an energizing warm-up in the Games Hall led by Jog Scotland Coach Hazel Patterson, the keen primary-school athletes were taken to the start and sent on their way by Inverurie Locos Co-Managers Kenny Coull and Scott Buchan.

At 11am, attention turned to the adult event, where Race Director Frank Mathers welcomed the runners. He also read a tribute to local runner Mark Sharp, who passed away during the 10K last year. After a minute’s silence in memory of Mr Sharp observed by all runners and spectators, Inverurie Citizen of the Year Gordon Booth officially started the race.

The first runner across the line was the winner of the Men’s 5K, Malcolm Beattie (Metro Aberdeen), in a time of 17.06, setting a new men’s record by over two minutes.

Several of last year’s winners retained their titles, including Robbie Simpson (Deeside Runners) in the 10K (32.49) and Carolyn Milne in the Half-Marathon (1.29.17), who took three minutes off her course and category record in the process.

Vivienne Bruce (Metro Aberdeen) not only kept her course and senior record in the 5K but improved on it by nine seconds (20.55). Lisa Leonard’s win in the 10K (39.10) and Cosmic Hillbasher Christopher Hill’s victory in the Half-Marathon (1.19.37) rounded off the day’s list of winners.

After the race, Stuart Gordon, General Manager of the Garioch Sports Centre, said: “Thanks to everyone who made Run Garioch 2012 such a success, including the marshals on the course, Sports Centre staff, the runners and of course the spectators who cheered them on.”

Run Garioch, along with the popular “Ten Weeks to Run Garioch” Training Programme, will return in 2013.

Keighley BigK 10K

The sun shone at the Keighley BigK 10K run/walk and event records were smashed across the board including the most ever entries at 1068 and the largest ever field of runners at 910.

Whilst the record for the fastest time to complete the undulating multi terrain course wasn’t broken Ryan Buck of York took first place with a very respectable time of 35 minutes and 59 seconds. The first lady was Jo Buckley representing Bingley Harriers. The oldest participant was over 70 and the youngest was under 10 all of which crossed the line to the inspirational sound of Jam on Top’s samba band ‘Jamba’ who added to the atmosphere greatly.

In terms of funds raised for the work of Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice an estimated £45,000 was brought in. This is £17,000 more than the previous event record of £28,000 set last year.

Keighley BigK 10K - March 18, 2012

As always the event fell on Mothers’ Day and each mother who finished the run was presented with a special Sport Keighley ‘K’arnation.

Highest individual fundraiser was Mark Hutchinson and highest team fundraisers were the Orvis family who raised the fantastic totals of £1100 and £592 respectively.

Full results are on the event website www.bigk10k.org.uk . Photographs of the day can be seen on the Sue Ryder – Manorlands Hospice facebook page and www.sportsunday.co.uk .
