Halewood 5K

The Halewood 5K, organised by Bug Runs, is a new, free of charge running event every Saturday at 1pm in Halewood, Merseyside. It's concept is similar to the Parkrun events that are run throughout the country, except with a later start to offer an alernative and also appeal to a greater variety of athletes who may be travelling further afield and is superbly organised by the Bugrun team.

In the latest Halewood 5K the mens race was won by Andrew Edwards of Deestriders, who finished in an excellent 16.54, which is just 9 seconds short of the course record. He was followed by 16 year old Jack Atkins of Liverpool Running Club in 17.31, and Chris Marshall of Chester Tri in 3rd place. In the ladies race it was local athlete Sam Tiger of Mossley Hill AC who finished in first place. Then it was Liverpool Running Bugs very own Sharon Wright who was just behind in 23.35, with Paula Dixon also of Mossley Hill AC who came 3rd in 23.40.

Some feedback from Chris Marshall (Chester Tri): "I ran this race today and it was superbly organised and very friendly and welcoming. A massive thanks to everyone involved in organising. The course is as fast as you say, I will be back."

Bath Skyline 10km

A crisp foggy morning greeted 200 keen runners for Relish Running Race’s penultimate Winter 10km and 5km races at Bath’s Skyline on Sunday.

Bath Skyline 10km

Runners had been warned about the muddy course and they were not disappointed! The challenging route took in some fantastic twists and turns around the National Trust’s Skyline route with stunning views of Bath to enjoy. The wooded course appeared enchanted, with deer spotted by some runners as they splashed through the mud. Clean trainers would have demonstrated a lack of commitment and everyone returning with mud up their legs competed to see who had got most dirty!

The tough climbs and rocky outcrops were not for the faint-hearted and it was brilliant to see the smiling faces of those returning… both seasoned runners and keen newcomers determined to demonstrate their Winter training successes. They were well catered for with sweeties and oranges at the finish – much deserved after their efforts.

University of Bath’s Ben Nagy showed his track talents as a steeplechaser were not wasted on an off-road course as he saw off a tough field, and Georgia Wood continued her dominance to win the women’s race.

The highlight for many was the always-popular 300m fun run around the Olympic Dressage training ground. The faces of the kids as they emulated their inspirational parents’ efforts were fantastic to see and we’re sure there were some great athletes of the future running.

As always, the event was brilliantly supported by Running Home whose off-road shoes are a must for these tough courses, as well as O2 Creation, whose flashlights and warm clothes helped with the early frosty fog.

We look forward to the final race of the series on February 26th, where the exciting Summer series will also be announced! Keep an eye on www.relishrunningraces.com for all the information!

Shred Events Devon vs Cornwall 10 Mile

29th January was the day, Mt Edcumbe Country Park was the venue, for this multi terrain grudge match on the oft disputed coastal Kernow border!

With Devon having taken the honours previously (in the 10km event at the end of October), Cornwall had it all to do. The running battle started from right in front of the historic Mt Edgcumbe house with all sub 2 hour runners times counting to help their chosen county to victory!

Shred Events Devon vs Cornwall 10 Mile

With the music pumping, runners lined up proudly wearing their Devon or Cornwall T-shirts and charged down a fast, grassy downhill start. Adam Holland lead the charge to the first turn for Devon (you’ve a large bag of jelly babies to pick up for that) and never looked back. Behind him Pete Waumsley, also for Devon, pushed hard all the way in the Senior Mens category with Matt Bisco sewing up third for Devon on the demanding course. Ian Smart was fastest man from Cornwall, running comfortably to a well run fourth place.

There was some beautiful coastal scenery to enjoy as the female runners ran round to the lovely village of Cawsand for the first drink stop. Cornwall’s Naomi Teir stormed ahead in the Senior Womens race with a brace of Devon runners, Jane Allison and Sarah Hirons, chasing hard.

In the Vet Womens category a great run by Cornwall’s Sharon Daw, wasn’t quite enough to see off a strong effort by Cathy Darby running for Devon, with Anne Luke pushing Sharon hard for a good all round Cornish effort.

The Vet Mens category could have gone either way for Damian Sandercock and Harvey Gurry in a close run race but with both running for Devon all Hans Thompson could do was secure third for Cornwall with a solid run.

Overall, there was some great feedback about the course and venue and we’ve been asked to run both events again next year. With that in mind all that’s left to say is a big thankyou to all the runners, marshalls and friends who made it all happen and to say, “Come on Cornwall, you can do better!” who were again crushed by the Devonians!

Barrett’s Canterbury 10 mile road rac

The streets around Chaucer Technology College in Canterbury, and the lanes around Bridge, Patrixbourne and Bekesbourne were filled with 889 athletes competing in the Barrett’s Canterbury 10 mile road race. Organised by Canterbury’s Invicta East Kent Athletics Club, the event was a huge success with more runners completing the distance than ever before.

Barrett’s Canterbury 10 mile road race - Sunday January 29, 2012

At 11am the athletes and runners were under starter’s orders and under way. The entries came from Clubs throughout Kent and the South-East and as far afield as France. Strong representation was in evidence from a whole host of East Kent Athletics and Running Clubs. The conditions on the course were a little tricky, with overnight and early morning rain making it a bit wet underfoot, and a bit muddy in place on the farm-track sections of the course. Thankfully, the rain held off the race itself.

The eventual winner was Andrew Rayner from Blackheath & Bromley Athletics Club in a time of 53.31 minutes beating the fastest time from last year. Second place went to Robert Latala and third to Alex Riches, both of whom are not currently attached to a running club. First home for the host club, Invicta East Kent Athletics Club, was Tom Purnell in 59mins exactly, setting a new personal best time, over two minutes ahead of his time last year. In the process Tom also became the internal Club Champion over the distance. One minute further back was the second athlete from the host club, James Rouse, in a time of 1:00.15 (1 hour, 15 secs).

Veteran athletes were also represented, with the first over 40 finisher, Gavin Kitchingham from Orpington Road Runners, in a time of 58.36 minutes and 9th overall. The first female across the line was Rona Louber, from Folkestone Running Club, a regular on the road running circuit in a time of 59.16 minutes, in 12th place.

A special mention should be made to Sharon Hawkins, from Maidstone Harriers, who despite a heavy fall in the first 100m, managed to pick herself up and complete the course in a very creditable 67.02 minutes, finishing in 86th place and the first female veteran-45 athlete across the line.

The team win went to Ashford & District Road Running Club, just ahead of the host club Canterbury’s Invicta East Kent Athletics Club in second.

IEK AC were on hand for all runners regardless of their goals, with a team of enthusiastic marshals cheering on all and ensuring everyone got round safely! The Club operated live
timing for the event, with the results instantly posted online.
