Race preview: Saucony Cambridge Half Marathon - Sunday March 11, 2012
The sold out Cambridge Half Marathon has attracted a headline sponsor; Saucony. The running specialists will sponsor the event, which takes place in the city on 11 March and is raising money for Cancer Research UK.
3000 runners will take to the streets of Cambridge, covering a 13.1 mile route that circles the city over two loops and finishes with an out and back along the River Cam. The event starts on Victoria Avenue and finishes on Midsummer Common.
Saucony has a range of award winning running shoes and apparel, which will be available to buy on the day at the event expo.
Jonathan Quint, Head of Marketing at Saucony commented: “Saucony is delighted to be headline sponsors of the Cambridge Half Marathon. The city has a strong running heritage and this has been reflected in the event being sold out already!”
“We’ll be looking forward to supporting the event and the runners in a variety of ways as we all build up to the race in March. One Step Beyond has a great track record of organising hugely successful events, and we’re thrilled to be partnering with them once again.”
Cambridge cancer doctor and professional triathlete, Lucy Gossage, who is also a Saucony ambassador, is set to take part in the half marathon, and is fancied as one of the top finishers.
She said: “I’m really excited to run the Saucony Cambridge Half Marathon and it’s great news that Saucony has been attracted as a sponsor in the first year of the event. Running through the centre of Cambridge on closed roads is likely to be an experience I won't forget! The fact that the event is raising money for Cancer Research UK makes it all the more special.”
Gossage is an oncology doctor, and works as a clinical research fellow in the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute. Her work is focused on kidney cancer, and is funded for her work by Cancer Research UK.
She added: “Money raised at events like this one go directly into funding doctors and scientists, like myself, to do really detailed research into cancer. Although cancer continues to affect the lives of so many people, we are making significant advances all the time in our understanding and treatment of it. This research is only possible with the extensive support from Cancer Research UK.”
Saucony joins the already-confirmed event partners, Anglia Ruskin University, Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital and Cambridge Property Lettings.
