Aylesbury Boxing Day 5k

The annual Boxing Day 5k race took runners through the streets of Aylesbury in advance of the shopper’s arrival! Approximately 250 runners took part in the 52nd running of the race and this year followed a new course, starting at the Kingsbury pub.

The Junior race which took place first was won by Ewan Joyce with Ben Lindars and Charlie Scott hot on his heels!

In the main race, the course was hillier than usual, with some sharp bends. Anuradha Cooray won in a time of 15:42 with Fabian Downs in second and Laurie Probert third. First lady was Vale’s Carolyn Boosey with Jade Leggett second and Lucy Mayer third.

Anuradha’s warm up for the race was a run into Aylesbury from Wendover and his warm down was the same return journey! He is reported to have had a problem on one of the tight corners of the race in that he was going so fast he had to take it very wide!

Best U17 pries went to Kieran Lindars and Jade Leggett; U15 to Ethan Luck and Alice Wright. The Kirk Clifford and Ruth Allcock Trophies were awarded to Anuradha Cooray and Carolyn Boosey respectively.

Warminster Plain Crazy 12

Plain Crazy is becoming an annual event, but without a permanent home for the race headquarters and being reliant on the military for permission to race on any particular part of the course, it tends to be different every year.

This year the HQ was in the Land Warfare Centre and worked out very well. A last minute course change due to circimstances beyond the organisers control meant that the cross country part of the course had to be taken out of the route 15 minutes before the off. This took a lot of the interest out and made it into a road/track circuit. Announcing the change at the start, the runners understood the problem and just got on with it.

A killer hill at the start lead runners on to the training area. The weather was kind with very little wind. Due to the course change the distance was down to 11.5 miles.

Simon Plummer of Salisbury won in 1:04:24, second was Mike Feighan of Exeter Harriers, 1:05:42 and third James Ruskin, Loughborough Students AC 1:06:07. The ladies winner was Amy Chalk of Bristol & West AC in 1:09:41, second Lucy Richens, unattached, 1:11:49 and third was Sam Kelly, Wootton Bassett Hounds,1:17:09.

The course was interesting in that it went through Imber Village, evacuated during the last war so the the American army could be taught house to house fighting prior to D Day, it also passed through "tank alley" where old tanks have been placed as targets. These features will be included in next years race if possible.

The race is organized by Warminster Branch The Royal British Legion as their main fund raiser and was sponsored by McCarthy & Stone Retirement Living.

Stanwick Lakes Recovery Run

A warm and damp dawn greeted the first day of 2012 in Northamptonshire where a band of brave and occasionally bleary eyed runners prepared to run 5km, 10km or a half marathon through the stunning scenery of the Stanwick Lakes site. The race started at 11am a slightly later than usual start designed to allow runners the time to enjoy entering the Olympic year prior to gaining their first well-earned medal of 2012. With just 208 days to go to the Olympic opening ceremony, the runners certainly did not hold back.

The traffic free route proved ideal for the runners as they made their way rapidly through the site of special scientific interest where some three thousand birds are currently spending the winter and muntjac deer had watched the marshals as they set out the route markers as daylight broke. The 5k race was won in tremendous style by Richard Dell who finished a full one and a half minutes ahead of Spencer Carr who was just ahead of Malcolm Davies.

The 10k race was won by Michael Boyce who was over two minutes ahead of Ritchie Parkins and third placed Gary Blaber.

The half marathon was completed in an incredible 1.13.46 by Damien Carr of Coventry Godiva amid several gasps of ‘who the hell was that’ from open-mouthed stunned onlookers. Fourteen (yes fourteen) minutes later, the second placed runner Mark Davies and third placed Darren Weston. We wish Damien luck in achieving his sub 2.20.00 time in the 2012 VLM.

Lloyd Clark, Race Director stated that it was a pleasure to see so many happy and athletic runners who were committed to enjoying gaining their first medal of the year. Several runners stated that they were heading home after the race to wake up the rest of the family and show their prized medal! Ultramarathon would like to offer special thanks to the marshals on the day without whom such events could not be staged; well done to all! The next event at Stanwick will be held on 22nd April 2012, discounted entry details can be found at www.ultramarathon.org.uk.
