Race preview: Cambridge Half Marathon - Sunday March 11, 2012
With places for the inaugural Cambridge Half Marathon already sold out, the event has received another boost with the announcement of several event sponsors.
Support for the event has been high with 3000 places selling out within a few days – just a few relay places remain. Taking place on Sunday 11 March next year, the half marathon will take place in the city-centre and benefit Cancer Research UK.
Event Director Adam Moffat said: “We’re excited to welcome Anglia Ruskin University, Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital and Cambridge Property Lettings as sponsors for the 2012 Cambridge Half Marathon. There has been an overwhelming response so far to the event, and to have sold out within a matter of days is incredible.”
The 13.1 mile course will take in some of Cambridge’s top sights as it circles the city over two loops starting on Victoria Avenue and finishing on Midsummer Common.
Anglia Ruskin University Vice Chancellor, Prof Michael Thorne, said: “I’m delighted that Anglia Ruskin University will be sponsoring the first Cambridge Half Marathon. It promises to be an inspirational event full of endeavour, fantastic stories and fundraising for a great cause – which is why we wanted to be part of it from the beginning.”
The University, which offers a range of sports related degrees, has around 30,000 students and 1,000 academic staff, making it one of the largest in the region.
Kirk Russell former head physiotherapist for the England cricket team, now lead physiotherapist at Progress, the Centre for Health and Performance at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital, said: “We are very pleased to be working at the inaugural Cambridge half marathon as it gives us an opportunity to become involved with the Cambridge running community. This will help us to more fully understand the requirements and needs of the runners to enable us to develop bespoke sports medicine support for the individual.”
Trevor Hames of Cambridge Property Lettings is another of the event sponsors. He had his own brush with cancer and is all too well aware of how it affects the lives of so many people.
He said: “This is an exciting, health-promoting event for Cambridge. We want to help make this a popular annual event in the city, which helps keep research into Cancer prevention and treatment– much of which happens here in Cambridge –well funded for many years to come.
He added: “The runners will be running through the streets we know so well through letting properties all over the city, I wish them well!”
