Full Monty-cute 10
This was the 13th running of the event, each year the event has seen dry weather, despite snow and ice threatening to cancel the event in 2010 and making sections icy in 2009
This is a really tough trail Race. South Somerset is hillier than you think and we have managed to squeeze 10 hills in the 10.5 mile route.
Ham Hill is just off the A303 above Stoke sub Hamdon, nearest big town is Yeovil.
The route first takes in Ham Hill War Memorial which is visible from the A303, then heads out through woods before the first steep hill (up and down), soon the 2nd hill up to St Michaels Tower is climbed, this over looks Montacute House (NT), the route then climbs a small hill before crossing parkland and then climbing another hill Ladies walk to the first Drinks stop.
Ancient parkland is then followed with a steep climb up through horses Wood then a mile of flat before climbing through woods on a muddy path. The route then drops to a farm track before a minor climb and track to a deceptive hill to the 2nd drinks stop then a steep gulley and flat section before the Climb up from Tinkers bubble to drop into the ancient Witcombe valley to the 3rd drinks then a climb to the Iron age Fort of Ham hill and the flat back to the finish.

First woman was Ruth Barrett (San Domenico rrc) who finished in a respectable 41:52.
Hugh Turner (83) picked up the oldest runner prize with a position of 454 in 70mins.

Nether Heyford Great Santa Run
Over 100 Santas joined in the early festivities to take part in the inaugral Nether Heyford Santa Run, raising money for MeningitisUK.
In particularly pleasant weather conditions for early December, the event began with a half mile children's race and a mile race for older children and adult novices around Nether Heyford village green.
The adult 5 mile race was started by the release of the Christmas pudding! Mike Aldridge from Wootton Road Runners dressed as a Christmas pudding to be chased by the Santas for a £25 cash prize.
The Christmas pudding was not caught this year so the prize will double for next year's event. Closely following the pudding over the finish line was the first Santa, Gary O'Brien from Swindon Harriers with a time of 27 mins 56. 3rd place overall was first lady Jazz Lowden from Wootton Road Runners.

Perivale 5
On a chilly but bright Sunday morning, Ealing Southall & Middlesex AC hosted the 14th staging of its annual 5 mile road race at Perivale Park Athletics Track
The field of 275 entries and 240 finishers was the largest in the history of the race. As usual, runners of all ages and abilities took part: the youngest was 15, the oldest was 71; the fastest took just 26 minutes, while the last to finish walked the two-lap course in just under 90 minutes.
The men’s race was a very competitive affair, with five men breaking 27 minutes.
In the women’s race Leigh James of London Heathside, last year’s third-placer, led from start to finish in 32:13, leading her club to a winning performance in the team race. Patricia Thomas took second place in 33:54 ahead of a fast-finishing Amy Cope of Serpentine.
The 5 mile race was followed by a 2km Fun Run for Under 15’s. Twenty-six youngsters took part, with ages ranging from six to thirteen.

jogscotland Christmas Cracker
The jogscotland Christmas Cracker 5k, in association with Run 4 It and North Lanarkshire Leisure, took place at Strathclyde Park. Despite freezing conditions and the occasional wintry shower, almost 300 participants entered the popular event, with many completing the course in festive fancy dress.
Participants took to the lochside 5k course for a bit of fun and fresh air on a crisp winter morning.
First male was Andrew Lawler from Law and District AAC who completed the course in 17 minutes. First female home was Paige Dickson in 20.54.
Now in its sixth year, the event proves a popular way for running fans to actively kick off their festivities in the fresh air and helps participants to keep on track with winter health and fitness regimes in a fun, seasonal way!
“The Christmas Cracker is a great way to take part in the festivities, without the usual indulgence that other forms of Christmas celebrations can have!” said jogscotland manager Alistair Currie. “The atmosphere was fantastic and the Christmas trees, snowmen and Elves all seemed to enjoy themselves!” he continued.
All finishers received a goody bag, t-shirt and medal and prizes were kindly donated by Run 4 It, Scotland’s running specialists.

Haglofs Open5 adventure race - Bacup, South Pennines

Well what a difference a month makes. From brilliant sunshine at the Long Mynd last month to rain, wind, snow, hail, thunder & lightning in brutal winter conditions at Bacup, Rossendale.
This event was a little different to the standard Open5 as guest planner, Emma Van Der Gucht, produced a well thought out Run and Bike score sections on the moors and quarries south of Bacup. The twist in this event was the inclusion of some technical singletrack control hunting around the Lee and Cragg Quarry red routes.
The weather played a significant role in this and many competitors retired after returning to transition, too cold to continue. Some hot tea and food from The Meal Machine at event HQ at The Kingfisher Centre were needed to thaw out.
There was some controversy too as one control placement in Lee Quarry was at the foot of a 100 foot quarry cliff. This needed fine navigation to locate and several competitors searched for this at the top of the cliff! After checking the control description they realised it was in the quarry floor and a scramble down steep banks was needed to get to the correct location. Karen McDonald, pleased with her win in the female solo category, commented "That was a really tricky control to find. It was quite scary looking for the control near the edge of a big cliff!"
Due to weather conditions scores were generally lower than normal, but there is still everything to play for in order to get a good series result as things continue with a long journey down south to the Quantocks next month on Sunday 8th January 2012. A good chance for a new years resolution to get out and play in the hills!

Do IT For Charity Santa Run - Starfish Greathearts Foundation
A sea of Santa’s took over Greenwich Park on Sunday morning to take part in the Do It For Charity annual Santa 5K or 10K race.
Fifteen runners were taking part on the day to support Starfish Greathearts Foundation, an international development charity aiming to bring Life, Hope and Opportunity to thousands of children in southern Africa affected by HIV/AIDS.
It was a cold wintery morning but everyone seemed in high spirits, excited about the race, full of the festive spirit and pleased to be running to support their chosen charity.
The event was well organised by Do IT For Charity, with all the runners receiving a free Santa outfit.
Being a fun run, there were no participant numbers or chip timing – this encouraged people from all walks of life to take part.
Greenwich Park was a lovely venue to hold the event – and with its many hills it provided a challenge for the more serious runners.
