Brampton to Carlisle road race

Newcastle-based Ethiopian Yared Hagos, running in the colours of his new club Wallsend, gained a runaway victory in Saturday's 60th Brampton to Carlisle Road Race.

Conditions were ideal and on the fast course, many of the 680 competitors the largest for some years, set personal best times for the distance. Hagos' performance was all the more creditable as he fell at the start and only caught the lleading group after half-a-mile before pulling away from his rivals. Passing halfway in 23mins 33secs with none of his pursuers in slight, Hagos went through 10km in 29mins 21secs, which improved his previous best for that distance by 45secs. The early pace together with the fall saw the leader slow down in the final 2M, but Hagos still crossed the finish line in a very fast 47mins 51secs, a time which has only been beaten on the current course by Sunderland's Brian Rushworth with 47mins 37secs in 1993. Hagos also picked up a £100 bonus for breaking the 49minute barrier and the time bettered his previous figures for the distance of 49mins 2secs set when breking the course record at the Derwentwater 10M, two weeks ago.

In a close battle for second place, nearly 3mins behind the winner Stuart Gibson from Scotland got the better of Morpeth's Ian Harding, who finishing time was 1min quicker than he has ran before. 2010 winner James Douglas finished 4th leading the host club to the team title. The event also incorporated the Northern Athletics Championship which meant Harding and Douglas were promoted to the minor medals behind Hagos. Wallsend, without the non-scoring Hagos, still took the silver medal teams awards, behind Border, with Gateshead in third place.

On a good day for the North Tyneside club, Wallsend's Danielle Hodgkinson, after a disappointing performance in the Great South Run, won the Womens' race. Hodgkinson, who took the lead after halfway, also smashed her previous best time by 2mins 23secs, set when winning the Tynedale 10M in September. Claire Simpson of Chester Le Street finished 2nd ahead of Wallsend's Stacey Rogers, who also bettered her previous figures by 40secs, which were set when finishing 2nd in 2010. With Vicky Hindson finishing 7th, Wallsend took the team title. The first three individuals and teams also took the Northern Athletics medals, with North Shields Poly and Border gaining the minor awards.

Dirt Half Challenge

Glorious sunshine and beautiful autumn colours were the setting for this year’s Dirt Half Challenge on 19 November. Due to the fair weather conditions underfoot were good and some great times were achieved. Current course record holder and last year’s race winner Greg Spellman won the race in an impressive 01:19:05, beating his own course record by just under a minute. First Lady Carla Fisher stormed home in 01:35:50 setting a new ladies course record.

The runners commented that they enjoyed the fabulous weather and picturesque scenery along the course, mostly vowing they would be back again next year, with one person even going so far as to say it felt like they had gone to heaven. Celestial experience or not all runners were safely across the finish line just after 1pm and the preparations for dismantling the course began. Another good day at the races for Dirt Running.

Luton Marathon

At 10 o’clock on Sunday morning the 21st Luton Marathon started from outside Lea Manor Sports Centre in Northwell Drive. Organised and marshalled by Stopsley Striders running club with the support of Active Luton, the Luton Marathon follows a three lap course through Luton and the surrounding countryside.

Nearly 600 runners assembled on the start line to take part in the full marathon or to tackle the first leg of the three-stage relay, ready to follow in the footsteps of Boxfit’s Dave Coard who had started his attempt to run two full marathons back-to-back at 6am.

The early morning mist that greeted Dave had disappeared by the time the runners passed through Bramingham and headed out to Streatley for the rural stretch of the course, before turning back into Luton through Sundon Park and heading back to the start of the second lap by the Purley Centre.

The race was won by Tim Haughin of WSE & Hounslow in 2:35:20, and Sally Wilder of San Domenico RRC won the ladies race in 3:01:27. The crowd gathered at the finish cheered through every runner who followed them, including Dave Coard who successfully completed his challenge in 9:00:56.

Stopsley Striders would like to thank everyone involved in making the event a huge success, and to the entrants who took part in this local race, looking forward to seeing you all again next year.

Bath Skyline 10km

Relish the Great Outdoors kicked off their Winter series with a fantastic event on the Bath Skyline and at the prestigious Bath University sporting campus. 100 runners took part in the 10km, 5km, relay and 300m races.

Bath Skyline 10km 2011

Photo: Race start

The course was an exciting mix of fun downhills, intricate woodland trails and quick open sections to push the pace. First places went to Charlie Unwin and Georgia Wood – posting challenging times for you to attempt to defeat with your Winter training. Ken Ham returned from his fantastic results at Dyrham Park over the Summer to top the Male Veterans category. It was great to see some keen youngsters supporting their parents, and they loved the 300m dash; especially collecting their much-deserved medals!

Unfortunately the stunning views of Bath this course highlights so well were hidden today by the atmospheric mist. The runners all agreed this just makes the anticipation of the next races more fun!

It would be fantastic to see runners of all ages and abilities and it’s a great opportunity for to motivate you to get out training during these cold months. See more about our events here or on our Facebook Page

The race was, as always, fantastically supported by Running Home with generous discount offers to all runners to purchase those much-needed Winter essentials.

Preston 10 mile road race

The weather was set to be kind to the runners with barely any wind, and any there was blew from behind along the straight by-pass, not too cold or warm and so it proved.

The record for the race, which has stood since 2003 when Billy Burns (Salford) set it at 50:11, was broken by his club mate Andi Jones in a time of 49m. 43s. There were 33 runners who got under the hour, including the first lady, missing their record, and many P.B.’s, as this race is well known for.

There were 384 finishers in this popular race which, next year, will be part of the Preston Guild series of events.

The Cornish marathon

The Cornish marathon has a reputation as one of the toughest road marathons in the United Kingdom, not just because of the multitude of steep hills, but because the weather across the moor can see anything from gales, hail, rain and even snow blown across an exposed course, which passes Celtic monuments, the lake of Arthurian legend Dozmary pool and this year a local farmer steering a small of herd cattle down one side of the road.

Fortunately in 2011 fortune smiled on the race, and an overcast and misty but dry morning greeted the runners, with a gentle tailwind to aid everybody up the first few hills. While it remains a relatively smallish race, 254 runners began the race in 2011, a record turnout, coming from as far afield as London, Coventry and Pickering in Yorkshire to take part.

The race is put on by East Cornwall Harriers and is known to runners for the friendly enthusiasm of the marshals and Cornish pasties on offer to all runners at the end in addition to the normal goody bag.

This year’s race dominated by athletes from Cornwall Athletics club, whose men Noel Kindon and Justin Thomas took first and second place in the times of 2.44.15 and 2.47.22. Third place was grabbed by the unattached athlete Andy Norris in a time of 2.52.19.

The ladies race was won by a tremendous margin by Cornwall AC’s Suzy Bosustow in a time of 3.09.33. Home club East Cornwall Harriers have a very strong ladies team and defending winner from last year Diane Roy grabbed second in 3.25.12, while Tracey Brown finished 3rd in 3.28.47.

Epsom 10

The 48 years of the Epsom 10 can hardly have had better weather conditions and certainly not since the race moved its place in the calendar to late November.

The tops of Epsom & Walton Downs were in warm autumn sunshine just proud of the mist that enveloped the suburbs below. The men's race saw a tussle between Justin West of Stragglers and John Collier of Westbury Harriers who pulled well clear of the rest of the field. By the finish on the historic Epsom racecourse West had drawn clear with an advantage of 21 seconds.

A strong turn out from Dulwich Runners was rewarded with first and third placess in the women's race with Zoe West of the host club, Epsom & Ewell Harriers, coming between them. Dulwich also took the women's team prize but Epsom and Ewell finished 4 in the first 10 for the men's prize.

The race is used by two local Vets clubs SCVAC and VAC as their 10 mile chamionship race and as usual this attracted some good performances across the age groups.

Swindon 10k

After 4 years, at last the weather was kind at the Swindon 10k which encouraged a record entry of 550 runners and resulted in 5 course records being broken together with lots of personal bests for many. Straight from the gun the favorite Simon Plummer of Salisbury ARC set off at speed and cruised to victory in a time of 32.21. Outstanding junior , William Christofi of Bristol & West finished second in a fantastic time of 33.28 setting a new course record for a junior. Closely following was Swindon Harrier, Gary O'brien who also set a new Vet 40 course record of 33.46.

Swindon 10k

The women's race attracted a high class field and was won by Bristol & West's Amy Chalk in a time of 34.57 which placed her 7th overall. Second was Joanna Emery from Coventry Godiva Ac in 37.39 and third was Elizabeth Smith of Westbury Harriers in 38.03.

The team prizes were again split with Swindon Striders taking the ladies team and Swindon Harriers winning the mens.

Race Organiser, Steve Goulding was impressed by how many new runners used this race to tackle the 10k distance for the first time which he says just underlines how popular running has become in the local area.

He would also like to thank Run Swindon and Swindon Karting Centre for their support with the event and a very special thanks to all the marshals who give up their time to direct and support the runners on the course and also to Swindon Harriers for providing the refreshments afterwards in the form of bacon butties and gorgeous cakes which went down a storm.

For those runners who fancy tackling a run on the 'wilder' side,The Rough 'n' Tumble 10 mile multi terrain event will be on 15th January 2012. Entries now being taken. See website for details www.grassrootsevents.co.uk

Matthew Walker Christmas Pudding 10K

A record 745 runners completed the latest running of the Matthew Walker Christmas Pudding 10K, hosted by Heanor Running Club, as months of preparation and organisation were rewarded with one of the most popular and successful 10K events in the region.

Now in its 25th year, this event has grown significantly in numbers and stature in recent years and saw runners venture from nearby Ripley Running Club and Sutton Harriers to as far afield as Walsall-based Aldridge Running Club and Horsforth Harriers of Yorkshire for this year’s event.

Supported by local running specialists Derby Runner and the Derby-based East Midlands Physiotherapy Training College who provided a free pre- and post-race massage service, each finisher also received a substantial Christmas pudding from the main race-sponsors Matthew Walker.

Matthew Walker Christmas Pudding 10K 2011

This year’s course remained the same since the switch in event HQ three years ago to Shipley Country Park. Starting and finishing once again at the park, the course followed a circular loop out of Heanor Gate Industrial Estate towards the village of Smalley before making its way down the undulating traffic-free road back towards the park and the final ascent up to the finish.

The day started with a heavy mist that didn’t clear before or during the race but otherwise conditions were perfect and typical for the time of year. Similarly to last year, the lack of wind and cool conditions helped contribute towards some decent times being posted both at the front-end and a little further down the field.

Local runner Chris Rainsford, representing Heanor Running Club, was the eventual race winner in a time of 32:49. Leading a group of three, including Stephen Price of UK Netrunner and Sutton Harrier’s Carl Allwood, Rainsford whittled the group down to two by the time they passed four kilometres and entered Smalley village. Rainsford continued to lead, closely pursued by Price, until the sixth kilometre when a decisive surge from Rainsford saw him build an ultimately unassailable lead. Price maintained his pace through the second-half of the race and finished second in 33:31; Allwood finishing third in a new personal best of 34:02.

In the women’s race, Nicola Clay of Stilton Striders came out on top on the undulating course to finish first in an impressive time of 37:32. Finishing a further minute back in 38:36 was Beverley Gray of the renowned Loughborough-based club Charnwood AC. Securing the final podium position was another local runner, Lucy Holmes of Ripley Running Club, who managed to knock over a minute off her previous year’s time on the same course to finish third in 39:38.

A number of veteran and team category prizes were also distributed in the post-race presentation with perhaps the most noteworthy going to Hugh Turner of Midland Masters AC who took home the Veteran-80 category hamper for his efforts in finishing 721st in 1:11.29.
