Weekend review: November 5 & 6, 2011

Pine Ridge 10K

The weather forecast for the Pine Ridge 10K was for morning rain which would last most of the day. The conditions were a far cry from that forecast and it ended up being misty, slightly overcast, with no wind and mild, creating the ideal conditions for this tough 10k in the idyllic setting among the pine tree of Wisley Common in Surrey.

The underfoot conditions were a little heavy after the recent heavy rain which had however helped on some of the sandy sections. The overall winner Mitchell Scott (West 4 Harriers) led from the start and took an early lead on the first uphill section within the first 1k. He never looked back and won by just over a minute from Chris Beecham (Highgate Harriers) who just out sprinted Chris Valdus.

Pleased with his win, Mitchell said “I was pleased with the run and enjoyed the course. It’s a tough but with some gentle inclines and not the steep I had expected. ”

The women’s winner proved to be too strong for the rest of the competition. Sarah Kingston stormed to an early lead and finished with a winning margin of nearly two minutes from second place Louise Ferguson (West 4 Harriers). The battle behind was for third place with Rachel Badham (West 4 Harriers) just beating Tara Wood.

Afterwards Sarah said “It was a good run today and thoroughly enjoyed the event.”

jAR - just A Run!

Held on MoD land the course was as unforgiving as they come - tough enough for the Army this was going to be a hard 10k course. The weather had been really wet in the days before jAR, on the day we were lucky enough to have weather to match the tough nature of the course. It was cold and grey, the ground was very muddy with lots of standing water from the word go. jAR was going to be a real Adventure Run.

The route provided a real mix of terrain from single tracks, deep gulley runs and open land. This race provided a big draw for trail runners and also for the dog running community who trail blazed their way around the course.

jAR will be back. It is a classic course giving the runners a real adventure. If just a run is what you want don't bother coming along next time. If you are after a real adventure run then see how jAR will challenge you next time!

Haglofs Open5 adventure race - Church Stretton, Shropshire Hills

Its was fireworks all the way at the second Haglofs Open5 adventure race of the current series in Church Stretton on Sunday 6th November. Competition in all 5 categories was close on a stunningly clear and sunny day on a fantastic course planned by Shropshire lad, Jim Rounsley.

Bike and run controls were spread along the length of the Long Mynd in the Shropshire Hills. The area is well known as a mecca for Mountain Bikers drawn to the amazinging single track which featured heavilly in the biking stage of the event. For the foot stage the controls were cleverly positioned in challenging places for experts, intermediate and beginner on open access land owned by The National Trust, who kindly gave there permission for the event to take part on their land.

Male solo Stuart Lynch was on fire as he rocketed round to clear the 5 hour score course and return nearly 2 minutes early to earn a score of 602 points which included a 2 points bonus for clearing the course and getting back early in this Long Mynd epic. Competition was also very close in the female pairs where the top 3 were seperated by less than 5 points!

The series is certainly shaping up to be a classic visiting all corners of the country and the next event at Bacup, South Pennines on Sunday 4th December is sure to be a hotly contested 3rd event in the series.

Ilminster Lions Charity 10k

Ilminster Lions Charity 10k 2011

On a beautiful sunny autumn morning nearly 300 runners took part in the Ilminster Lions Charity 10k on Sunday 6th November started by the Mayor of Ilminster Carol Goodhall. Runners started arriving to register as early as 8.20 with the usual rush in the last half hour. Just before the start a minute’s silence was held in memory of the unfortunate people who lost their lives on the M5 on Friday and this was impeccably observed.

As always runners of all ages were coming across the finishing line with smiles on their faces having enjoyed what is a challenging course. Words like “Great Run, A well organized event and Yes I will run it again next year.” Were heard many times.

The organiser's Thanks go to the many helpers, supporters and sponsors of the event.

Crowborough 10k

The Crowborough 10K, 25th Anniversary, organised with the able assistance of many of the "Crowborough Runners" saw 325 runners and some great performances.

Although the weather was overcast, it was perfect for the run with no rain or snow this year! There were no injuries and although the first male and female did not beat our course record (Darrell Smith in 1999 with a time of 32.12 and Andrea Green in 2008 with a time of 38.22) they came home in excellent times.

Such was the success of the event that it should put the "Crowborough Runners" and their 10K, firmly on track to be regarded as one of the best 10K events in the UK!

The "Olympic Torch 2012" will pass through Crowborough on July 17th next year and two "Crowborough Runners", namely Sharon Wheeler and Brenda Styles, are currently waiting to hear if they have been selected to carry it, at some point!
