29th Snowdonia Marathon Eryri

Wales and GB international Rob Samuel pulled off the biggest win of his career on Saturday, as he won Britain's toughest marathon.

With a line-up of international endurance runners that many a UK marathon would have been proud of, the 2011 Snowdonia Marathon Eryri was destined to be a superbly competitive event, and it was the 25-year who old led majestically over the final 6 miles of this iconic 26.2 mile event - now in its 29th year - to win in 2hrs 36 mins and 45 secs.

Commenting on his terrific winning effort Samuel said:"This is crazy. I mean I am in good form, but I can't believe that I have won. It means so much to take my first marathon win here at the Snowdonia Marathon, in front of such a fantastic crowd and on my 'home turf'."

After three years of stormy conditions and heavy rain the organisers were hopeful of some respite for the runners (who came from 14 countries). But as the race got off at 10.30am, started by First Hydro’s Brian Tindall, rain and high winds were already the order of the day and over the next 6 hours the unpredictable Snowdonian weather took hold with torrential rain, gale force gusts and hail all adding to the spice of this event which lived up to its billing as the toughest and most scenic in the UK.

Nearly 2000 runners set off from just outside of the village of Llanberis, now considered the 'outdoor capital of Wales' due to the preponderance of sporting events over the course of the year. However, it is this historic event which is perhaps the toughest, due in part to the unpredictable nature of the weather in this part of Wales at this time of the year. But the elements were not to deter these intrepid competitors, and following the race all talk has been of a superbly organised event, testimony to the organising team and their dedication to this classic event on the Welsh sporting calendar.

With 2010 winner, and recent gold medalist at the Commonwealth Ultra Trail Championships, Richie Gardiner taking to the start line, all talk was of who could stop the Aberdare man taking a second straight win. However, 55km of tough Anglesey trails and the Cardiff Half Marathon over the last four weeks would ultimately take their toll on the Welshmen, as he eventually finished in third place.

Splitting the two Welsh runners was Scot, Murray Strain. After finishing second at this year's Snowdon Race, he ran very strongly for yet another runner-up spot in north Wales. The GB international orienteer was running his marathon debut and also found the conditions tough, and despite being a seasoned fell runner found the last thigh-burning two miles extremely difficult. Asked if he would be returning to the event his words were "most certainly".

One notable top 10 finisher was Jez Bragg (7th). The ultra specialist is a previous winner of the famous UTMB race in France and this year finished 4th in the world renowned US 100 mile trail race, the Western States.

The women’s race proved to be a highly dramatic story. Winner Kelly Morgan only hit the front in the last mile, after overhauling Ruth Johnstone (3:12:11) to win by just 39 seconds. Johnstone - returning to the race after giving birth in 2010 and missing last year's event - had led the race for almost 18 miles, and simply couldn't descend as quickly as Morgan when it counted.

Storming through the field in the last 6 miles of the race the Pontypridd runner commented, "I don't know where it came from! I took it steady in the first half of the race, and afer about 14 miles just ran faster and faster to the finish. I am completely amazed, but very, very happy". Her time of 3:11:32 was some 6 minutes outside of the course record set by Christine Howard in 2010. Exmouth runner Ellie Sutcliffe made up the top 3, finishing strongly in 3:13:50.

Barns Green Half Marathon

James Baker wins 2011 Barns Green Half MarathonJames Baker from Chichester Runners won the 29th running of the Barns Green Half Marathon on Sunday. Almost 1500 runners took part in ideal running conditions through the beautiful West Sussex course with Baker winning in a time of 1 hour 10 minutes 30 seconds.

This was the 34 year old’s 4th win in the race and he finished over a minute and a half ahead of Tim Haughian from Windsor, Slough, Eton and Hounslow AC who recorded a time of 1 hour 12 minutes and 4 seconds. Third place went to local boy Neil Boniface from Horsham Joggers with a time of 1 hour 12 minutes and 46 seconds.

Baker took the lead after about 2 miles and gradually pulled away from the field. However, he would not even have been running in the race had he been offered a place as one of the elite runners in the Great South Run which also took place on Sunday. Instead Baker decided to run once again at Barns Green and was delighted with his decision. “I love this race and have finished in the top 10 every year since 2000” he said looking remarkably fresh immediately after the race. “The conditions were ideal and as always the race is very well organised.”

In the ladies race, the honours went to Claire Grima from Hercules Wimbledon. She finished in a time of 1 hour 22minutes 45 seconds. Clare ran with her husband, David who crossed the line just in front of her “He always does that” said a delighted Claire after the race. Last year Grima finished 4th but it was only 4 months after giving birth to her first child. This year’s longer preparation for the race helped her and she was thrilled with the way things went, “I hit the front after about 3 miles. I really enjoyed the race, it is a lovely course and I particularly like the fact that all the roads are closed and you can just concentrate on your running”.

Second in the women’s event was Fiona Powell from Brighton and Hove City AC who finished the race in 1 hour 24 minutes 39 seconds just 2 seconds in front of Sarah Kingston of Fittleworth Flyers.

The race was particularly significant for one local runner. 58 year old Keith Valentine from Horsham Joggers was competing in his 100th half marathon and completed the race in just 1 hour 28 minutes and 11 seconds finishing 4th in the Veterans Men (55-59) race.

The battle for positions soon heated up with Andrew Wright of Carnegie Harriers getting the better of Grant Baillie of East Kilbride with Bruce Carse of theBellahouston Roadrunners following close on his heels.

The Stickler 10.1

In mild, drizzly conditions - perfect running weather - 414 humans and several dogs completed the 10.1 miles and 1500ft of climbing involved in The Stickler running race – The Dorset 3 Peaks Challenge.

This was the 17th time this event has been organised by local, friendly running club – The Dorset Doddlers. However, this year the race was supported by James’s Cheese, who made bespoke cheeses named after the three infamous climbs involved. Also, The Dorset Piddle Brewery ensured that the small army of marshals who ably manned the course, were rewarded with a complimentary pint of real ale.

Runners came from far and wide – even Colorado, USA. First overall was Tom Fisher of Avon Valley Runners who completed the course in an impressive 1:04. First lady was veteran Jenny Moore who whizzed round the course in just over 1:18.

Asha Oxford 5K

On a beautiful crisp autumn day in Oxford University Parks, volunteers from the Oxford chapters of Asha for Education and UNICEF came together to organize a 5K Walk/Run to raise money to support basic education of children in India.

The 5K was a zero overhead event which means all of the money raised goes directly to the children. The project the organisers were supporting with this event is an orphanage for abandoned and abused girls in Kolkata, India called All Bengal Women’s Union (www.abwu.org). Through the generosity of the 5K participants and their volunteers over £400 were raised!

28th Ricky Road Run

The Ricky Road Run (www.rickyroadrun.co.uk) is a nine mile race, based around Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire.

The race was started and continues to be organised by Veolia Water, and is a fundraiser for the WaterAid, dedicated exclusively to the provision of safe domestic water, sanitation and hygiene education to the world’s poorest people. With 400 athletes signed up, the popularity of this very scenic and challenging event continues.

28th Ricky Road Run

While the race has been running for years, there were changes to the 2011 route to remove the busy A404 section on the basis of runner and athlete safety. This also meant, more hills and a longer course…! We’ve always (Garmin) measured the old course at 8.8 miles, and the new course by our measurement was close to spot on the advertised 9.5 miles. So, don’t be fooled by comparisons with previous years times…

At the front of the race 2010 second place Matt Woodman (Stafford Harriers) had taken a clear lead after little more than 150 metres, and that intent was followed up with a gun-to-tape victory. Speaking to Matt after the race he said “the course is really nice – the rural roads are great to run on, but it’s definitely harder and is more challenging than previously – longer! I was hoping to break 53 minutes today, but it’s quite difficult when you are in front on your own and not being pushed. I’m pleased though!”

The ladies race was a repeat of 2010 with another victory for local athlete Sian Thomas (Chiltern Harriers) who finished very strongly for a clear win.

Amberswood 'Spooky Woods' 4 Mile Trail Run

After the October monsoons, the organisers and runners were again fortunate to have a sunny day for the second trail run of the year. The trail was wet and greasy, with vivid colours from autumns rich collage of leaves both on the ground and still on the trees. The Halloween run, with more emphasis on FUN, had many runners attending in fancy dress, from witches, vampires to a psycho clown!

The run was soon underway, as all the runners at different paces set off onto Amberswood. The double track soon threw them into the 'spooky woods' singletrack where the runners grave yards and pumpkin alley awaited them. Our special halloween guest Freddy Kruegar enjoyed heckling the runners in the final section of the woods, picking off those at the back for his return to Elm Street.

Grimaces on the finish line were soon changed to smiles and laughter as everyone enjoyed warm food with old friends and new.

Halloween Hellraiser 9

This off road multi terrain race was run in warm and dry conditions and saw a record number of finishers in its fourth year of running.

The course was slightly extended due to unforseen circumstances so the distance has now moved to approx 9.3 miles but this didnt seem to deter anybody from enjoying the race - with the added incentive of a bottle of locally produced Ale for all finishers.

Faas Climb

Cancer Research UK’S inaugural Faas Climb, a brand new tower running event took place on Saturday 29th October at Heron Tower in the heart of the City.

Over 150 runners took to the stairs to brave the 888 steps to the top, all raising vital funds for the world’s leading cancer charity. Runners flew up the 37 floors, marvelling at the spectacular view at the top stretching across London and beyond.

The newly completed Heron Tower, which opened earlier this year on Bishopsgate, is the tallest tower in the City, and the third tallest in London, standing at 230 metres. Faas Climb was the first running event of its kind to be allowed to use the building.

Marc Daigneault from Deloitte was the fastest man up, in an amazing time of 5minutes and 7 seconds. Fastest woman was Emma Davis, who sped up the stairs in 6minutes and 16 seconds.

Apprentice stars, Felicity Jackson and Glenn Ward braved the steps all in the name of beating cancer, coming in with the times of 13:37 and 7:29 respectively. Glenn said “it was great to be involved in such a unique event and Cancer Research UK is such a great charity to be involved with.”

The event was organised by volunteers, The City of London Friends of Cancer Research UK, in association with Puma and their new Faas brand, plus event partner Deloitte.

City Friends’ Chairman, Geoff Taylor, said of the event, “There has been a fantastic atmosphere and a great sense of competition between the runners. Everyone has said they want to come back and try and beat their time!”

For more information visit www.faasclimb.com. You can also follow the committee on Twitter @CR_UKCityLondon and join the Facebook group City of London Friends of Cancer Research UK.

The charity funds over 4,000 scientists, doctors and nurses in the UK who work to discover new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat all types of cancer. Cancer Research UK does not receive any government funding.

Brentwood Running Festival

Now in it’s fourth year the Brentwood Running Festival continues to go from strength to strength. The promice of some beautiful off road trails enticed close to 600 runners to hang up their road shoes for the weekend. The course provides a superb mix of challenging climbs, picturesque woodland trails and great marshal support with several runners commenting on how great the format is: “A scenic route on the challenging side with excellent organisation. Excellent support, the Marshalls even felt like old friends by the end.”

The weekend started on Saturday with an opportunity for the stars of the future to shine. The children’s 2K race saw twice as many starters as 12 months earlier. The 10k race started an hour later. In total there were over 130 finishers on the first day each with a story to tell about how they had tamed the hills at Weald Country Park.

Brentwood Running Festival - Saturday, October 29, 2011

On Sunday the attention turned to longer races with a marathon and half marathon staged over an extended course retaining all the hills from Saturday interspersed with some delightful forest trails and lake views.

In the half marathon local runner Crispian Bloomfield from Billaricay Striders led the field by almost a minute after the first 2 miles and proceeded to extend his lead throughout to come home a full 6 minutes ahead of the field in 1 hour 18 minutes and 56 seconds, shattering the course record from last year in the process. Second place went to David Laing who could comfort himself with being the fastest V40 runner on the day, with Jonathon Blackburn coming home third.

Ladies winner Deborah Appleton was equally dominant heading the field from start to finish and ending the day with a top 5 position overall. Breaking the course record by an impressive 14 minutes into the bargain. Behind her Gail Savage was second with third place being taken by FV35 winner Charley Jennings.

Places in the marathon were a hard fought affair with Mark Jefford belying his V40 status to come home overall winner in 3:12:08 bettering the course record by a mere 8 seconds in the process. Graham Booty was a close second with John McBurney coming home third. The V50 trophy was lifted by David Oflyn with Andy Wilmot using the experience of over 500 previous marathons to good effect to come home first in the V60 category.

For the ladies Helen Ryder led the field and took both the ladies trophy and FV40 prizes ahead of V35 winner Charlotte Smith and second place FV40 Sarah Thorne, and in a fairy tale outcome Betty Chan celebrated her birthday in style by winning the V50 category.
