Tain Hill Trail Race
71 runners and walkers aged 5 to 65 turned up in Tain from as far afield as Singapore and Glasgow to take part in the Tain Hill Trail Race, which incorporates an 11 mile race, 11 mile walk and 4 mile Fun Run. The weather stayed dry so runners and walkers were able to take in the fantastic views over the Dornoch Firth on the 11 mile undulating route round Tain Hill. Local clubs Tain Runners and Highland Hill Runners were both well represented.
The race is organised by Tain Runners in conjunction with Tain Gala Association with help from Tain Task Force and supported by St Andrews Ambulance Association. Tain Runners provided post race refreshments at the St Duthus Hotel where the prizegiving was held. The main prizewinners received specially commissioned Tain Pottery mugs and several other local businesses also donated spot prizes, with 2 hampers of Fair Trade goodies donated by Tain Runners, so not many left the prize-giving empty handed. The proceeds of the race will be split between Tain Gala Association, Tain Task Force and CLIC Sargent who will also benefit from all sponsor money raised during the event. CLIC Sargent have benefited from several thousands of pounds from the race since its inception in 2004. There was also a raffle in aid of the charity so hopefully they will receive another healthy sum this year.
The race winner was Gordon Lennox from Kindeace and first lady home was Karen Lyons from Inverness. The Fun Run was won by Ruaridh Oliver Jones while Helen Gordon and Constance Nankivell crossed the line neck and neck to be first girls back.

Standish Hall Trail Race
In perfect sunny and dry conditions, a record 210 competitors lined up for the start of the autumn running of the Standish Hall Trail Race on Saturday October 22. The 10 kilometre+ course is a pretty demanding one with plenty of hill climbs, and, as you would expect, also plenty of mud.
John Morrissey of Wigan Phoenix was first across the finish line in 36:55, with Staffs Moorlands AC’s Jason Burgess in second place in 37:16 and Peter Mallison of South Cheshire Harriers, third in 37:55.
Jo Mayland (Staffs Moorlands AC) was the first lady home, 28th overall, in 43:53, followed by Rachael Moore (Wigan Phoenix) in 45:08 and Charlotte Wilson (Liverpool Harriers) in 45:25.
The men’s team prize went to Wigan Phoenix ‘A’ (John Morrissey, Phil Waterworth, Paul Marshall and Karl Tuzio). Southport Waterloo ‘A’ (Steven Wilkinson, Steve McLean, Rick Bowker and Neil Adshead) were runners-up and Liverpool Harriers ‘A’ (Glen Groves, Rob Dewhurst, Joe Parkinson and Geoff Rawlinson) were in third spot. The ladies’ team winners were Southport Waterloo ‘A’ (Tracey Peters, Carole James and Carol Wright).
Bearing in mind that when it was first run in 2003, the Standish Hall race attracted a field of just 35 athletes, the popular twice annual event is certainly going from strength to strength.
Well done to all 190 finishers, especially Laura Norfolk and Gemma Smalley, who both came home in a time of 1:25:38 and got the biggest cheer of the day and also to the five doughty M70 competitors, including Paul Murray of Horwich RMI Harriers, who completed the course in a stunning 51:00.

Beachy Head Marathon
An Orpington Road Runner was first over the finishing line in last weekend’s Beachy Head Marathon stealing an eighth victory from the University of Brighton’s Stuart Mills by less than 30 seconds.
Steve Nimmo, who runs with the Orpington Road Runners, claimed first place in this year’s Beachy Head Marathon finishing the 26-mile cross country course in just 3 hours 2 minutes and 28 seconds. Seven times winner Stuart Mills was hot on his heels completing the course just 27 seconds later matching his finishing time from last year.
More than 1,700 runners, walkers and joggers came from across the globe to take part in the event on Saturday, with one of the country’s largest off road marathons covering a challenging route across parts of the new South Downs National Park.

Photos: The start, race winner Steve Nimmo and Susie Casebourne, first woman across the line
Susie Casebourne running with Team Lifestyle was the first female across the finishing line this year in 3 hours 37 minutes, followed by Emma Richards from the Hailsham Harriers in 3 hours 38 minutes, and Orpington Road Runners’ Suzy Yates in 3 hours 50 minutes.
A record 908 entrants completed the Beachy Head Marathon within the magical 6-hour barrier this year compared to 851 in 2010, with a total of 1,299 entrants successfully completing the course in less than 9 hours 30 minutes and navigating their way around the 26-mile route, which includes 300 steps and 14 gates.
With new electronic chip timing introduced this year and with For Goodness Shakes rewarding entrants across the finishing line with free samples, organisers Eastbourne Borough Council have received excellent feedback from entrants and are already preparing for next year when the event returns on 27 October 2012.
Entries are expected to open in February 2012 for any budding athletes looking to take on Steve and Stuart and compete for the marathon title or for any runners, walkers and joggers looking to take on their own personal challenge and raise money for charity.

Grim Duathlon
The Grim duathlon conditions may not have been as grim as normal due to lack of rain but it set it up for some faster times and exciting racing. The overall winner Julian Sandford (Army) who romped home 4 mintues ahead of second place competitor Fraser Sim who was seven seconds ahead of David Dougall. Julian (an Army Mountain Bike Champion) completed the first 5k run in second place but romped through the 20k bike section before completing the 5k run although a little slower than the first 5k. Pleased with his win, Julian said “This is the first time I have competed in this event and thoroughly enjoyed it.”
The women’s event proved to be very competitive throughout the event. Donna Tew proved to be too strong for the second placed Anita Hibberd who was overtaken in the last 1km to win by nine seconds. Donna led the first 5k run only for Anita to pull away on the 20k bike section with Donna pulling back about one minute 30 seconds on the final 5k run. Afterwards Donna said “It was a great competition and managed to pull back Anita in the last part of the run.”

Shock Absorber WomenOnly Run
A bright and sunny morning greeted the 1,000-plus runners who lined up to tackle distances of five or ten kilometres at the first ever running of the Shock Absorber WomenOnly Run, with many taking part in support of official charity Breast Cancer Care.

The event kicked off with a warm up courtesy of sponsors Shock Absorber, followed by a few words of encouragement from TV personality Denise Van Outen before the 5k race got underway, followed by the 10k event 15 minutes later.
In the longer of the two races the closed-road course proved to be a fast one as Jenny Gowans (Team Freespeed) got away from the gun and quickly built a commanding which she held to the end in an impressive time of 36 minutes 29 seconds. Second place went to Sarah Bullman in 36:43 before Gemma Farrell rounded out the podium in the day’s longer race in 37:34.
In the five kilometre event, Charlotte Wheeler posted the only sub-20 minute time of the day with her 19:02 easily good enough for the win. In second place was Penny Echevarria in 21:36 followed by Megan Pearson in third in a time of 22 minutes 39 seconds. After the race, Jenny Gowans, the winner of the 10k event said; “I’m absolutely shattered... a great course and I’m pretty happy with a PB – and my Shock Absorber bra prize!”
