The Bupa Great South Run weekend is set to kick off in style, with record numbers participating in the junior and mini events and the introduction of a brand new 5k run
Taking place on Saturday 29 October at 10am, the Bupa Great South Run 5k will add to a weekend of great running alongside the premier 10 mile, Mini and Junior events.
Over 700 people have signed up so far for the 5k route which will have the same finish line as the one used for the Bupa Great South Run the following day, and entries are still open. Suitable for runners of all abilities, all entrants will receive a guaranteed opportunity to take part in the 10 mile Bupa Great South Run 2012.
Sonia O’Sullivan, Ireland’s greatest ever runner and double Bupa Great South Run winner will be joining the participants for a fun-run around the flat course, which starts and finishes on Clarence Esplanade in Southsea.
Entries are also still open for the Bupa Mini and Junior Great South Runs, with the closing date set at 9am on Monday 24 October.
Once again youngsters taking part can get involved in a range of ‘come-and-try-it’ activities at the Event Village, Castle Field on Saturday 29 October from 9am. There are over 20 activities to choose from, including football, mini golf and street dance. This year will see additional activities added to the line-up including a sprint track, climbing wall, inflatable assault course and circus acts workshop.
Not only does it give the children the opportunity to try new sports and activities, but they can also win prizes with their ‘Sport Passport’. All youngsters will be given a passport booklet and receive a stamp for each activity they try.
The Saturday events will be followed by the Bupa Great South Run, which will be broadcast live on Channel 5 on Sunday 30 October at 10:30, with a record 24,000 entries.
