Race report: Guildford Riverside run and walk - October 16, 2011
Now in its second year, the Kellystore Funraiser is only growing from strength to strength! Just over 500 runners, walkers and supporters turned up on a classic English, sun filled, autumn morning. Set in the heart of Guildford and in aid of the Guildford based charity Disability Challengers, participants chose to run either 10km or 5km or walk 5km or 7km.
As runners collected their race number and timing chip, the atmosphere of nervous anticipation was tangible. A mass warm up conducted by Personal Trainer Danielle Rogers from Tone To Perfection helped to only heighten pre race excitement!

The 10k runners started first with Rob Sherwood taking off like a rocket, so making the life of the leading bike marshal very difficult! 5 minutes later the 5k runners started and Richard Hooker took off, determined to catch the 10k runners! He won in 18.42 so he did catch them! James Adams and Cliff Comber did too, finishing in 19.52 and 20.09 respectively. Five minutes later Sue Bell stormed home to win the women’s 5k with Nathalie Vacher and Amy Martin seconds behind.
Meanwhile Rob Sherwood was busy making the 10k his own but with Ben Allon-Smith and Mark Hadley chasing him down. But it was too little too late as Sherwood crossed the line in 35.57, almost a minute ahead of Allon-Smith and nearly two minutes ahead of Hadley.
The women’s 10k like the 5k was a more closely fought affair with only seconds separating the winner Judith Rose in 45.13, from Katarina Zajalova 45.24 and then Andrea Thomas 45.58.
All those positioned received prizes from Fitstuff the Guildford based running shop.
Families who benefit from the support offered by Disability Challengers made up the walking contingent. Setting off at a brisk pace they walked the course the runners had just completed. Most ended up pushing themselves to covering the 7k rather than the 5k, testament to the strength of support this charity has for its work.
Thanks must go to all the volunteers for ensuring the event ran smoothly and for Danielle Rogers for making sure all runners were well and truly warmed up!
