The ‘Mouth to Mouth’ 10k

A clear sunny day on 15th October 2011 greeted the runners for the very first 'Mouth to Mouth' 10k run at Sandymouth, North Cornwall. There were runners from Devon, Somerset and Dorset with a strong local Cornish contingent. Almost 60 runners took on the challenge of the multi terrain course running along scenic coast, over open farmland and through shady woodland.

Fred Hutt, Ranger with the National Trust, helped to organise the day and said 'It was great to see so many people of different abilities getting outdoors and enjoying the run. We're looking forward to next years event already''.

The event was supported by the local running club, Bude RATs, and Sean Jack was one of their competitors, he said 'It's a great route to run and well organised by the Trust, it should be a great addition to the annual running calendar'.

The event was won by Ben Mitchell of Bude RATs in 45m43s with Jo Meek from Tavistock Athletics the first female in 47m06s. Second male was James Millar (46m32s), second female Clare Donovan (48m44s). third male was James Marshall (48m 15s) and third female was Sharon Daw (51m 27s).

Discoveryrun 2011

Over 200 runners from the UK and Holland took part in the traditional Discoveryrun a fast, relatively flat 10km, along the sea front at Dovercourt & Harwich.

In the 10km a great battle for the win was fought out between Harwich Runner Robert Reason and the Dutch runner Jan-Jouke Vos. Untill 7k Vos held the lead, however a strong last 3k gave Reason the victory.

The mayor of Harwich gave a welcome handshake to every finisher.

Major Series – North

British Military Fitness’ first Major Series in the North took place on Saturday 15 October in Leeds and saw over 550 people take part in the cross-country adventure race. Similar to the atmosphere of a BMF park class, the event has a friendly, motivating and fun feel, and while challenging, the help of BMF instructors (the Major’s troops) around the course make it an achievable experience for everyone.

The uniquely military themed course put the runners through their paces over 11km course littered with obstacles ranging from muddy bogs to a giant slippery slide.

‘What a great event! It was really tough but really good. The organisation, attitude and general atmosphere of the event were excellent, the marshalls were encouraging and exuded competence. The weather was spot on; it could so easily have been horrible. So thank you for the dirtiest run of my life!’ said Simon Carter, who finished the course in 1 hour 25 minutes.

Sarah King, Event Manager at BMF, believes that the event offers something a bit different in a market that is full of 5k and 10k fun runs, marathons, and triathlons: ‘The overwhelming feedback we get from all our events is that the event is fun, there’s lots of banter and camaraderie between participants and instructors and we wanted to create an event that focused on this. The Major Series is a tough challenge but we believe that we have made it achievable and fun for all fitness levels by posting our fantastic instructors around the course to encourage runners and make it an enjoyable and different experience for them. There are no other runs on the market that have this level of camaraderie and we believe that it offers our runners a unique experience, allowing them to truly enjoy a tough physical challenge.

Winning times were 49 mins 3 seconds from James Clark in the male category, and 58 mins 37 seconds from Lizzie Spencer in the female category.

Jill Oliver 10k

Over 120 runners set off from Lee Valley Athletics Centre 10am on a beautiful sunny morning to run Edmonton Running Club's Jill Oliver memorial 10k. Lee Valley Athletics Centre is a top quality athletics facility used by many top class athletes and keen amateurs alike.

Jill Oliver 10k

The race started at Lee Valley Athletics Centre and followed the River Lee and paths around the Lee Valley Park from Pickets Lock to Stonebridge Lock in North London, before heading back to the athletics centre for a final lap of the track. The course is flat and fast, great for those with P.B. ambitions, and also good for others who like a nice gentle run on a Sunday morning.

The race finish was an exciting one with an exciting battle for first place on the final lap of the track, and only two seconds between the winner Greg Spellman and second place Liam Proudlock.

The race was followed by tea, coffee cake and biscuits inside the athletics centre. Runners were presented with race t-shirts and there were trophies for the respective winners.

Green Drive Five

Once more Lytham St. Anne’s Road Runners attracted a sizeable entry of 371 for their popular Green Drive Five race through rural Fylde. The course is flat and fast and a balmy autumn morning was made for good times.

The comfortable victor over a strong men’s field was top 3000m steeplechaser Stuart Stokes of Sale Harriers. Stokes, who has represented England in the past three Commonwealth Games, recorded an impressive 24.09, just 3 seconds outside the race record to finish well ahead of second-placed local runner Stuart Robinson of Blackpool Wyre & Fylde. The Blackpool men had an inspired day with Luke Minns finishing third and outstanding junior Daniel Quarmby fourth. Unsurprisingly this trio collected both the race team prize and the Lancashire A. A. team championship.

For the second year running the women’s race was won by Lytham’s remarkable veteran Susan Samme. To win outright at this level at the age of 48 is an outstanding achievement and her time of 29.58 moves Samme up to second in the national rankings for her age group. Second-placed lady in a race where veterans led the way was W35 Sarah Ridehalgh of Accrington in 30.46 with Yvonne Wyke of Parbold Pink Panthers third, a further minute behind. Wesham’s Joanna Goorney’s fourth spot, along with good support from Helen Lawrenson, 7th and Kath Hoyer, 16th, earned the Wesham ladies a race and Lancashire Championships team double.

Cranmore Chase Fun Run

Brue Valley Rotary Club together with Wells City Harriers organised their second annual Cranmore Chase Fun Run on Sunday 16th October. The starter and prize giver was Ben Radford, a direct descendent of the original Radford brothers.

Cranmore Chase Fun Run 2011

There was a good turn out of competitors who were blessed with fine weather and good conditions. Many runners commented on how much they had enjoyed the event with its challenging and scenic route. Many had returned for a second year.

There was a separate children’s race in an adjacent field and all young competitors were with a prize regardless of their final position.

For the adults, there was a wide range of prizes from bottles of fine wine, chocolates and mementos from the nearby railway. The money raised from this event will be donated to East African Famine Appeal and other local charities.
