Race report: The Nine Edges Endurance Challenge 2011

by Editor
Tuesday 27th September 2011

Saturday 24th September saw Edale Mountain Rescue Team hosting its most important annual fundraising event, the Nine Edges Endurance Challenge

The event was a great success, with the fastest competitor knocking six minutes off the course record, at 2h 41m. Competitors have so far raised a staggering £6100 for Edale MRT even before sponsorship money has been collected.

Competitors endured and many even enjoyed 20 miles, and 900 metres of ascent, across nine gritstone edges in the Peak District. Participants choose to either Climb, Walk or Run the event, with climbers walking or running it as well as climbing a route on each of the edges in between!

The challenge started at Fairholmes (Grid Reference SK 172 893) and competitors traversed nine gritstone edges of the Peak District – Derwent, Stanage, Burbage North and South, Froggatt, Curbar, Baslow, Gardoms and Birchen Edge, before a drink at the Robin Hood pub at Baslow, before being driven by the team back to the start. Edale Mountain Rescue Team members provided checkpoints along the way and provided safety cover throughout the event, which happily wasn’t needed in the end!

Each participant paid £20 to take part in the event, and this goes to funding Edale Mountain Rescue Team, and our vital service provided to the local community and to visitors to the area. Many participants choose to raise additional sponsorship to raise even more money for the team, and the event is oversubscribed each year, with the event selling out by July this year!

Local running shop, Sweatshop, provided all the Entrant Numbers, as well as generously donating Isotonic Drink Tablets and a £5 discount voucher to all entrants. T Shirts for the event are being printed by Chris Bentley at the Stitch Factory. The organisers are also very grateful to the Robin Hood Pub at Baslow for their support!
