Women running to support domestic abuse charity RISE

Race report: RISE 8K Undercliff for Women - Brighton, Sunday September 18 2011

The RISE 8K Undercliff for Women, one of the main fundraising events for Brighton based charity RISE and a firmly established event in the Sussex running calendar, took place on Sunday 18th September.

With the route starting in Saltdean and running along the Undercliff Path to Brighton Marina and back, this run certainly deserves to be described as a scenic coastal run. After a rhythmic warm up by Zumba trainer Federico, nearly two hundred women of all ages lined up on the start line.

Brighton Samba band Silver Sounds was drumming up a carnival atmosphere sending runners on their way, and the Hula Honeys were on site to not only take part in the 8K Run but to also raise some money for RISE with hula hoop coaching for anyone who wanted to give it a go.

Angel Collins was the first woman to cross the finish line in 33.20. Runner up Nicole Clark came in at 34.20 with Anita Bungaroo finishing 3rd in 36.00.

Sponsors of the 8K Undercliff Run included Sweatshop and Studio57 with prizes donated by Breathe Unity Network.

For the first time walkers and families could get involved too and show their support by taking part in the 8K Undercliff Walk for Families.

One runner commented: ‘I have taken part in this Run every year since it launched, the rugged coastline, white cliffs and atmosphere are hard to beat! Showing support and raising money for a local charity is really important to me and I love the goodie bag with it containing things like mascara, lip gloss and shampoo! I will be back next year, no doubt.’

Julie Hales, Fundraising Manager for RISE, said: ‘I am so pleased that the weather has been on our side and that we were blessed with blue skies and sunshine! I would like to say a big thank you to the team at RISE, all the volunteers and marshals and everyone who has been involved in making the Run and Walk a success. And a big thank you of course to the runners and walkers who have taken part in the 8K Run or Walk this morning to raise awareness and funds for RISE. Here’s to our 5th birthday in 2012!’

The RISE 8K Undercliff Run for Women and 8K Undercliff Walk for Families is one of the main fundraising events for RISE which provides services for women, children and young people affected by domestic abuse.
