Exercise Endurance
This event was based on a representative Army endurance march, carrying a 40lb bergan and is a test of fitness, determination and route finding. It is a nominal 30 miles, although this years route ended up being a touch under that distance.
Starting from Pont ar Daf, competitors set off at 2 minute intervals, either solo, in pairs or as teams of four, for their first objective Fan Frynch. One of our map reading instructors was camped up there ready to send the competitors on to 'Y junction' where (unknown to me), were brews were available to everyone as they came through! This would have been welcome as the next two legs were pretty tough...cross-graining above Ystradfelte reservoir to RV3 at Beacons, then on over to Pontsicill via a variety of routes. F
rom here it was the long drag up the ridge to the summit of Pen y Fan before blasting down hill back to pont ar Daf!
The winner was Dr Simon Barry in a fast time of just 9h12m, closely followed by young Oliver Heyes (running for the Para Charity) in a time of 9h32m. From here the field spread itself out but there was only one DNF (due to creaky knees) and everyone else completed the course. Last team in were the guys from Warminster, led by Alex Laird in a time of...well, inside the cut-off anyway!

Dyrham Park 10km
Relish Running Races were delighted their final event of the series drew another superb field of runners for a fantastic day of racing at Dyrham Park.
The 10km series was won by the incredible Will Christofi, a day after celebrating his 17th birthday, with a new course record of 36.58. Quickest woman in the 10km was 19-year old Naomi Webber and the 3km winner was Emma Jones at merely 11 years old. The field was a great mix of experienced and novice runners, who loved the challenging course, shared with the deer, stunning views and lots of support from many families Relishing The Great Outdoors!

The incredible series spot prize of weekend for six at the National Trust's Clutterbuck Cottage was won by a very lucky Christine Reynolds. We hope she enjoys this amazing prize donated by the National Trust.
It has been a pleasure to be joined this season by everyone who has raced at Dyrham Park. We have been privileged to work with some fantastic colleagues... Cath Pye and all her staff at the National Trust have been a wonderful team who represent the Relish the Great Outdoors theme so well; and Running Home and Cytomax have sponsored each race with fantastic prizes and offers for all runners. We have been supported by a team of brilliant marshalls each race day and couldn't have put on so much fun without them!
For all those who've joined with us this year - we hope you've had as much fun as we have and can't wait to see you again for our soon-to-be-announced Winter and 2012 events. For anyone interested in the new race season... please register on www.relishthegreatoutdoors.com for all the latest news.

Truro Half Marathon
Heavy clouds loomed and high winds blew as several hundred runners and their supporters gathered on Truro’s Lemon Quay Plaza on Sunday to check in for the Charles Stanley Truro Half Marathon. And then the heavens opened and the rain teemed down.
Fortunately, the rain stopped before the 546 competitors set off on a challenging 13.1 mile course around the city and into the hills beyond. A misdirection on the opening loops through the city streets had everyone somewhat bemused but it had little effect on the total distance.
The route began and ended with a rough and somewhat muddy 1.5 mile trail along the old Newham railway line that soon has everyone sorted out and in neat single file. Up ahead Peter Le Grice of Mounts Bay Harriers soon opened a wide gap ahead of Noel Kindon (Cornwall Athletic Club) with another gap to Colin Snook (also Cornwall Athletic Club).
Runners had to cope with a mile-long climb up the Calenick Hill and, on the homeward stretch, an even steeper and energy-sapping plod up the notorious Harris Hill. In between came a chilling, breath-taking hailstorm at Carnon Downs before a welcome downhill run into Devoran and a three-mile level run along the river’s edge through Point and Penpol – a lovely scenic trip on some other occasion.
The final mile home was a battle into a head wind blowing across the Truro River, a trek around the back of the Tesco supermarket and a couple of hairpin turns down into the underpass leading back into the plaza where there was much talk about tough conditions and slower than expected times.
However none of this seemed to affect Peter Le Grice who came home the winner in a race record time of 1 hour 13min 27 sec. Noel Kindon was more than two minutes behind (1.15.32) with Colin Snook taking third place in 1.16.01. “The leaders were well spread out for most of the race,” said Snook. “We couldn’t close the gaps.”
Jo Meek (Tavistock Athletic Club) romped away with the women’s race, finishing in 1.26.00, a clear five minutes ahead of Truro Running Club’s Isobel Wykes (1.31.25) with Revis Crowle (East Cornwall Harriers) close behind in 1.31.41.
Race director Diane Boardman described the race as a hugely successful event that brought crowds of spectators to Lemon Quay Plaza as well as many who lined the course to encourage all competitors lined the course to encourage all competitors.
“Our half-marathon is not only a race but also a major charity event,” she said. “Thanks to all who took part and supported today’s run Truro Running Club hopes to be able to make a substantial contribution to Carrick Mind.”
Of the 546 runners who started, 520 finished.
With Justin Thomas (1.18.25) taking fourth place overall and six runners in the first 20, Cornwall Athletic Club were easy winners of the men’s team race over Hayle Runners and St Austell Running Club.
The East Cornwall Harriers team of Revis Crowle, Diane Roy, Lydia Collins and Tessa Mason took out the ladies’ team race ahead of Hayle Runners and Mount’s Bay Harriers.

The Home Run 10k
A 10k for Home Retail group employees, family members and business contacts. The oranisers would have liked more runners but the event did clash with a BIG race up north this year as a lot of people kept reminding them during the registration period!

Despite that, over 120 people entered and, thanks to sponsorships from some of suppliers, the costs for administration, prizes and goody bags were all covered, meaning that the entire entry fees for all runners, along with any sponsor monies raised, will go towards the Teenage Cancer Trust (the Home Retail Groups current charity partner); The Teenage Cancer Trust have provided the following statement: "All proceeds raised by Argos and Homebase and its customers will support young people with cancer across the UK and Republic of Ireland. The money is helping Teenage Cancer Trust fund, build and maintain specialist units within hospitals that are designed to feel like a home-from-home and give young people the very best chance of a positive outcome."
It was a beautiful day and some excellent finish times were achieved. The Race was started by Tom Flanagan, one of this years players from the MK Dons football team - he also awarded the winners with their trophies.
The team prize was won by the "LS Runners"

ADP Highclere Castle 10k multi-terrain race
Despite an unfavourable weather forecast, running conditions were ideal for over 300 runners who arrived early on a misty morning to enjoy the timeless beauty of Highclere Estate, hoping to complete the ten kilometre multi-terrain challenge. It was the tenth anniversary of this event, organised by Newbury Athletic Club. The accurately measured, undulating course is run on a mixture of estate roads, fields, tracks and woodland paths. It passes immediately under the impressive castle and affords spectacular views over the Hampshire and Berkshire countryside. Lord Carnarvon sounded the starting horn at precisely 10.30 to set the athletes on their way.
332 runners crossed the finish line headed by Ross Nickerson from Winchester College in a time of 36 minutes and 26 seconds, ten seconds ahead of regular competitor Tim Hughes, who was just a few seconds slower than last year. In third place was Newbury AC’s Wayne Lillis (37:35) who also won the “Graham Hiller” shield for being the first Newbury runner home.
A strong Newbury contingent, including Wayne, Sam Hall, James Craggs, Sophie Crumley, David Wright and Chris Pudney won the team prize.
Sophie Crumley was also the first lady home, eighth overall in a fantastic time of 39:34, a clear four minutes ahead of Reading Road Runner’s Lesley Whiley (43:34, 20th overall), third female was unattached runner Lisa Godding in 44:13.
In the ladies age categories Lesley Whiley and Lisa Godding headed their respective peers, but having achieved a top three finish, the awards went to Marie Coultas (Newbury AC, 45:10, 29th overall), Sally Bowry (unattached, 45:36, 34th overall) and Liz Harkness (Newbury AC,60:15, 236th overall). Male Category winners were Stephen Goulding of Swindon Harriers (40:35, 11th overall), Owen Williams (unattached, 46:19, 45th overall), and in his first year in the over 60 age group Newbury’s Mick Cornwall picked up the final prize.
The organisers are grateful to the Highclere Estate who allows the use of these stunning grounds for this popular event. Lord Carnarvon has regularly competed in the race, and this year finished in 279th position in a creditable time of just over 65 minutes. The organisers were anticipating a speedier results service this year, with the introduction of computerised chip timing. Despite successful pre-testing the system failed as the first runners crossed over the line. Thankfully the Club ran a manual back-up, the system eventually kicked in but there was a disappointing delay whilst manual recordings were fed in. Eventually the presentation of results was impressive, and is available on the club’s web-site (www.newburyac.org.uk).
Whilst the seniors raced around the edges of the estate, junior athletes were invited to compete on a shorter, 2000 metre circuit around the inner road of the estate. We hope that the runners, children and spectators, enjoyed a memorable day at Highclere. Newbury AC thanks ADP Dealer Services of Hungerford for their support. The race committee hope to stage the race again next year, since it provides a unique chance to experience this wonderful setting, proceeds also go towards training young Newbury athletes and a substantial donation is made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, who manage the drink stations and assist with marshalling

The weather was ideal - sunny with light wind. The race starts on Margate Beach and then heads towards Ramsgate and back with rocks, seaweed, rock pools and cliff footpaths with soft sand dunes to climb.
The winner was Dan Wood from Hastings with an incredible eight minute win over second place man Steven Groom from Larkfield. First woman was Heather Fitzmaurice in eighth place over all. Istead and Ifield was the first Team,

Hove Prom 10k
There were 214 finishers, which was a little down on last year's exceptional entry. Nevertheless, a good turnout on a fast, flat, 2 lap seafront course
The winner was about 40 seconds slower than last year's course record, but still a very good time in a more competitive race. Despite a gloomy forecast, the weather held off with no rain and only light winds.

Farnham Pilgrim Marathon 2011
This was the second Marathon organised by the Farnham Weyside Rotary Club and, from the feedback received, it was the most successful.
Large sums of money were generated in sponsorship and all the participants seemed to enjoy the day. The course was found to be interesting and challenging, and some very positive comments have been received about the organisation and the friendly and encouraging marshals.

The Ponton Plod 2011
This is the 6th year the event was run and once again entrants had the choice of three distances, 12, 17 or 27 miles.
Entry numbers at 181 were a little lower than last year, perhaps possible entrants had been deterred by the rain forecast for Sunday, perhaps they didn’t know we always get a good day for the Plod. Despite this forecast entrant were treated to a nice warm day with little wind.

15 minutes after the last walkers had finished we had a shower for about 10 minutes, it seemed as though it had waited for everyone to finish!
Entrants one again came from far afield, Staffordshire, W Yorks, Kent, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and possibly the furthest UK entrant from Caerphilly in S Wales. This however was beaten by Karen Collins from Australia who did the 17 mile route 2 years ago, enjoyed it so much she came back this year to do the 27 mile route.
The routes cover parts of Lincolnshire and Leicestershire and pass through several villages including Stoke Rochford, Buckminster, Croxton Kerrial, Denton, Harlaxton and Wyville and are mainly on footpaths and bridleways with only a small amount on public roads.
In all three distances new course records were set. One minute was knocked off the 12 mile course, an amazing 12 minutes off the 17 mile route and 2 minutes off the 27 mile.

RISE 8K Undercliff for Women
The RISE 8K Undercliff for Women, one of the main fundraising events for Brighton based charity RISE and a firmly established event in the Sussex running calendar, took place on Sunday 18th September.
With the route starting in Saltdean and running along the Undercliff Path to Brighton Marina and back, this run certainly deserves to be described as a scenic coastal run. After a rhythmic warm up by Zumba trainer Federico, nearly two hundred women of all ages lined up on the start line.

Brighton Samba band Silver Sounds was drumming up a carnival atmosphere sending runners on their way, and the Hula Honeys were on site to not only take part in the 8K Run but to also raise some money for RISE with hula hoop coaching for anyone who wanted to give it a go.
Angel Collins was the first woman to cross the finish line in 33.20. Runner up Nicole Clark came in at 34.20 with Anita Bungaroo finishing 3rd in 36.00.
Sponsors of the 8K Undercliff Run included Sweatshop and Studio57 with prizes donated by Breathe Unity Network.
For the first time walkers and families could get involved too and show their support by taking part in the 8K Undercliff Walk for Families.

King Alfreds Torment
On a rain sodden day some 150 stout hearted souls arrive at Stourhead Gardens to run the now infamous King Alfred’s Torment.
Early rain made sure that the course would be wet, muddy, slippery and even harder than normal. The rains held off for the start which was led away by a small group led by Nathan Young of Bristol & West AC. By the time the leaders had reached halfway the heavens opened and everyone suffered from the torrential downpour. Three quarters of an hour after the start Nathan appeared - considering the conditions in a brilliant time of 44.58, followed some time later by Mick O’Docherty also from Bristol & West AC.
By the time the 7th runner appeared the timekeepers waterlogged watches had given up the ghost and emergency procedures came into play three people started their wrist watches and everyone's times were recorded.
Just before the tail enders arrived at the finish the rain stopped and the sun came out and shone over another great race and stayed shining for the rest of the day.
