6th Lakeland Trails event - Keswick
Local Keswick AC international runner, Russell Maddams, dominated the 6th Lakeland Trails event in Keswick on Saturday 3rd September. In torrential rain, Russell pulled away from an early leading bunch of athletes in the blue riband event, the Derwentwater Trail Race, including Northumberland Fell Runner Philip Sanderson, Scotland's international Marcus Scotney and London's road running expert David Miller. Winning by over a minute, a delighted Russell powered into the finish in 56.50, followed by Philip Sanderson in 58.06 and in third place Marcus Scotney (Dumfries Running Club) in 58.47.
Sarah Tunstall, Kendal AC's GB International, fresh from her recent victory in the Swiss International Matterhornlauf, lived up to being the pre-race favourite, outclassing the women's field and finishing a staggering 7th place overall in 62.37. Runner up was in form Sarah Ridehalgh, Accrington Road Runners, in 67.54, with Rachael Thompson, Horwich RMI Harriers, making the podium in third position in 68.07.

Oldest competitor, 78 year old Malcolm Ball, from Norfolk, won the Vet 70 category. Segretta Stompers New Orleans Jazz Band provided live entertainment throughout the day, with singer Pete Lashley performing at the prize giving. The event was supporting the local Keswick Football Club, along with the regional charities Cancer Care and North West Air Ambulance and thousands of pounds will be raised by the event for various charities.
Sponsors and partners include PUMA, Ay Up Lights, R and R Photos, Pete Bland Sports, Wilsons Kendal Mint Cake, Trailrunning.co.uk, Sleepmonsters.com and VO2 Max Events
The next Lakeland Trails event in Coniston on 1st October has only a few places remaining. Entry for the 2012 Lakeland Trails are now available.

Kenilworth Half Marathon
Coventry Godiva Harriers’ Ben Jones broke seventy minutes to win the eleventh edition of the Kenilworth Half Marathon. Hosts Kenilworth Runners filled five of the ten top positions to take the team prize. It was double success for Coventry Godiva as Myshola Kirkham was first lady home. Early feedback suggests that the race was a resounding success, with 546 finishers completing the challenging 13.1 mile half marathon course.
The Kenilworth Half Marathon may have moved several weeks earlier in the calendar from its traditional Autumnal slot but competitors would hardly have noticed on arrival at race HQ at Castle Farm Sports Centre as persistent rain and leaden skies threatened to dampen spirits of spectators and runners alike. Thankfully come the 10am start the rain cleared and conditions were near ideal for runners, with welcome cloud cover and pleasant temperatures.

Photo l-r: Kenilworth Runners Phillip Gould (632), Andrew Siggers (155) and Connor Carson (72). Second placed Richard Simkiss (500) of Kenilworth Runners
By the first mile marker Ben Jones had broken clear and was never troubled, despite the best efforts of Kenilworth Runners’ Rich Simkiss who set off in chase.
Simkiss ran valiantly to match his second position in the 2010 Kenilworth Half Marathon and was delighted to not only run two minutes faster than last year but knock eleven seconds from his half marathon personal best as he clocked a chip time of 72:19. Moreover Rich took first place in the Warwickshire Half Marathon Championships incorporated in the Kenilworth Half Marathon.
Third position went to Ed Banks of BRAT (Birmingham Running and Athletics Club).
In the ladies race it was Myshola Kirkham from Coventry Godiva Harriers who came home first in 85:27 to beat Bournvillle Harriers’ Linda Howell with Steph Russell of Northampton Road Runners third home and first Veteran finisher.
Once more local charities are set to benefit from proceeds raised by the Kenilworth Half Marathon and Kenilworth Runners, who are celebrating their twenty fifth anniversary in 2011, are already making plans for the 2012 Kenilworth Half Marathon.

Tameside 10K
What a fantastic race! This was the common comment from many of the runners who took part in the inagrual Tameside 10K, which we were told was the first race of its kind for many years in the area.
A field of just under 200 lined up for the start on a quiet country lane in the Ashton-U-Lyne/Oldham border and tackled the undulating course which took everyone past the local landmark of Hartshead Pike and the fabulous views over the countryside & local area.
The Red House pub on Lees road was the race HQ and had hot drinks and breakfast baps on offer throughout the morning. There was even aerial photos from Flight Academy, a local company, who flew several people over the course during the race, in their helicopter.
The weather was also kind with the big clouds passing us by and eventually towards the end of the race we were graced with some sun shine.
All the finishers came away with a good quality hi-viz technical t-shirt and a goody bag.
The race is run anti-clockwise & entirely on the road, with no major junctions having to be negotiated and the majority being on country lanes or quiet minor roads. The description from most of the runners was undulating to hilly, with the winning time being a shade over 35 mins.
East Cheshire Harriers took both the Male & Female team prizes.

Alice's Run
A run held in memory of Alice Redmond, a Blackshaw Head girl who died tragically in 2005, recorded a great turn-out yesterday.
Around 200 runners took to the streets and trails of Mytholmroyd and Hebden Bridgeto take part in Alice's Run, a 10k multi-terrain race through the Calder Valley. The run, supported by Active Human, raises vital funds for Epilepsy Action, the UK's largest member-led epilepsy organisation.
The first man over the finish line at Calder High School was Alex Whittem of Calder Valley Fell Runners. Alex broke the course record with an impressive running time of 36 minutes 40 seconds. Sue Becconsall was fastest in the women's category, with a time of 47 minutes 31 seconds. In addition to the main 10k race there was a kilometre children’s fun run. Around 20 children completed the course and all the children who took part received a medal. Prizes in the adult race were donated by Halifax-based online sports retailer, Active Human.

Little Aston 5m
On a very grey and overcast sky, a total of 132 runners took part in the above events. The rural course was undulating but with ideal running conditions for this accurate 5 mile race.
Dave Mansbridge from Telford AC came back again this year to try and improve on last year's second place and duly succeeded in winning in a time of 27min 17sec. In second place came Paul Terleski from the home club Royal Sutton Coldfield Athletics Club in 27min 53sec, followed by Ian Mansell from Centurion Road Runners in 28min 34sec.
As far as the ladies were concerned, Lynne Cox from Tipton Harriers ran exceptionally well and beat several high quality men coming 4th overall in 29min 05sec. Second was Geraldine Boyland
in a time of 33min 02sec, followed by Andrea Deathridge in 33min 58sec closely followed by Fay Mason in a time of 34min 03 sec. None of these 3 ladies belong to a running club and would be able to hold their own against other club members.
Race numbers were slightly down from previous years, but the good news is that the club were able to produce results far more quickly than in previous years with the presentation of prizes taking place within 10 minutes of the final runner completing the course.
Next year's event will take place on Sunday 2nd September, 2012 and athletes of all abilities will be made most welcome.
