The 2 Islands Half Marathon

This was the first running of The 2 Islands Half Marathon. It took place in more or less perfect running conditions on Saturday 27 August. There was a small, mainly local field of 25 runners, from whom there was very positive feedback. The intention will certainly be to hold the event again next year.

The weather was kind, in fact perfect according to some runners, being a cool 18° with little sun, a slight breeze and no rain.

The event was being stage by Reading Abbey Rotary Club, ably assisted by Tadley Runners, for the benefit of Shelter Box.

Serious and not so serious runners had gathered to tackle the all-terrain course that had been laid out in the Englefield Estate by volunteers from Tadley Runners. The 10k run had 155 competitors, the juniors had 11 and the fun runners totalled 9. In all, the race had doubled in numbers from the 2010 inaugural event. What next year?

Arundel Scouts’ Castle 10k

A clear day dawned for around 530 registered runners in this year’s 1st Arundel Scouts’ 10k, which was being run over the current course for the eleventh time. Regular participant (and course record holder), James Baker, set a cracking pace right from the off and held onto this lead to finish almost 3 minutes ahead of Stephen McLoughlin and Leighton Aspell. The strength of the field is evident in the under 40-minute finish for the first 10 runners.

As in previous years, the Ladies showed strong contention with Kelly Jarvis romping home a little outside the 40-minute mark, followed by Jane Lawrence and Lel Griffiths. Ladies’ results were:

This event is a major fund raiser for the 1st Arundel Scout Group and the profits contribute greatly towards the running of the Troop. The organisers are therefore very grateful to the Duke of Norfolk and his staff for allowing them to utilise the Castle grounds for the event and facilitating its smooth running. They are also grateful to the West Sussex Gazette and Southern Water for their support this year.

Shillingstone Hill Race

The cool breezy conditions, ideal for running, saw a record 117 entries for the Shillingstone Hill Race on Bank Holiday Monday. The race, jointly organised by the village and the Dorset Doddlers running club, is an event in the annual Shillingstone Family Sports Day. It is a very scenic mainly off road five and a third mile dash to the top of Okeford Hill and back with some very steep climbs and rapid descents. The recent rain had made the course good to un on - soft underfoot without being too muddy.

Unfortunately a direction sign that had been tampered with caused the first four runners to miss a turn and run a quarter of a milre in the wrong direction before realising the problem and returning to the turn but, apart from leading times about three minutes slower than expected, it had no material effect on the result.

Runners from Poole clubs scooped the men's prizs. Jason Robbins of Poole AC was first in 35:13 closely followerd by clubmate John Spear in 35:24. John Towner, third in 35:48, was the first of the large Poole Runners contingent. The first male veteran, aged 45 or over, was David Cartwright, also of Poole Runners, seventh overall in 36:37. The first male Dorset Doddler was James Rielly in 41:01.

The ladies race was won by Sarah Chaloner of Poole AC in 37:04. Jane Chapman of Bournemouth AC was second in 38:15, and Janice Palmer of Poole Runners was third in 39:52. Lynda Faulkner, the first Dorset Doddler, was fourth in 40:10.

The first local runner was Dorset Doddler and Shillingstone resident Michael Peters in 43:35.

The race raised nearly £500 for the village. The Shillingstone Hill Race is the second of the three races organised by the Dorset Doddlers, falling between the Sturminster Half Marathon on the first Sunday in August and the Stickler. also at Shillingstone in Octobe on the sunday the clocks go back. Between them they raise well over £2000 for local good causes. The Dorset Doddlers welcome new membes of all abilities. The main training sessions are at Sturminster Sports Centre every Thursday at 7:00pm, but there are other meetings especially for beginners. See the Doddlers' website for details.
