Compton Canter – 9.3km trail race

The Compton Canter is held each year on the first Saturday of July and is staged in conjunction with the Compton village fete. The race is mainly off road and follows some very picturesque tracks and trails that pass through the Berkshire Downs.

However, those wishing to push themselves find it quite a tough event. The first 3.5Km are predominantly up hill (100m of climb) but the views from the top of Lowbury Hill are worth the effort once you get there. After the turn round point the course follows a gently undulating route back to Compton village.

In keeping with previous years the running conditions were ideal, if a little on the warm side, and new records were set in both the men’s and ladies’ races. Nick Jones (Newbury A/C) led from start to finish and came home a clear winner in 32:16. Sophie Voller (Westbury Harriers) also had a good run and finished in 37:22, almost a minute ahead of local girl, Jessica Franklin (Newbury A/C). There were 58 competitors.

This year the organisers hosted a series of races for the U10, U12, U14 & U16 boys and girls. 23 junior athletes took part and were loudly applauded by the parents and fete-goers alike as they charged across the finish line.

All the races were finished in plenty of time for the competitors to look around the fete’s side shows, inspect the display of vintage vehicles or enjoy a picnic on a pleasant English summer’s afternoon.
The Compton Canter could not be hosted without the willing support of the race marshals who give up their time freely - many thanks to them all.

Kinlochleven Ultra

The first staging of the Kinlochleven Ultra saw a small but determined field lining up at the start line next to Kinlochleven Power Station. Conditions were near perfect with temperatures around 17C and clear skies as the runners set off along the old military road towards Glencoe.

A gruelling long climb that would take them from sea level to an altitude of 548m lay ahead to the saddle between Stob Mhic Mhartuin and Beinn Bheag followed by the descent of the Devils Staircase into Glencoe after which an undulating run along a twisting single track road would take the runners to the head of Loch Etive and through the scenic Glen Etive. Campers and wild deer watched as the runners progressed through the increasing warmth of a perfect July day. The only shade given on the stretch of the route came from patches of pine trees and runners were accompanied by the chilly babbling waters of the River Etive.

Sea level was reached again at the halfway stage where the runners turned to re-trace their steps back to Kinlochleven. Cumulus clouds began to provide some much welcomed relief from the sun but the ever present Scottish midges began to bite at the runners as they made the relentless undulating climb back up to Glencoe.

The final checkpoint lay within site of the King’s House Hotel, alone in quiet solitude on the edge of Rannoch Moor. Hilary Kernaghan had taken a strong lead but there would be no cool pint of beer for Hilary, instead she was contemplating the steep climb back up the Devil’s Staircase where she would soon climb 260m in just 1.2km.

After running for 7.16.45, Hilary crossed the line as the first female and overall winner of the Kinlochleven Ultra. Hilary was followed home by Richard Kell with a time of 7.53.48 and in third place, Steve Doidge-Harrison; Steve will be running the Rio Marathon in just two weeks time and all at Ultramarathon wish him luck.

Powters Newmarket 10k

The fifth running of the Newmarket 10k was as in previous years bathed in sunshine as 181 competitors lined up at the Ellesmere Centre to contest the undulating 1 lap route that starts in Stetchworth passing through the village of Wooditton with a notorious climb from 8k towards the finish back in Stetchworth.

Leading from the onset Newmarket Jogger Matthew Harvey ran an incredible race to finish 1st overall in 33:53, a new course record, Matthew is the first competitor to break 34 minutes and it’s fitting that the course record goes to the host club. The last few months have seen Matthew rack PB’s over various distances from Marathon to 5k and winning podium finishes are becoming something of a habit for the Jogger who set a PB of 2:36 in this year’s London Marathon and a week later went out and won the Newmarket 6k Heath race followed by the Saffron Walden 5k a fortnight later.

Matthew’s parents who helped marshal the event proudly cheered their son home as he took home yet more silverware. The race was extremely competitive with some of the regions finest athletes turning out and Maz Firouzi, Cambridge Tri Club, wasn’t going to make it easy for the Jogger as he ran a very competitive race to finish 2nd in 33:59.

Robert Reason, Harwich Runners 34:03 was 3rd overall. Robin Clifford was the next Jogger to cross the line in 35:23 with team mate Vincent Coogan in 6th place in 36:00, having 3 finishers in the top 6 guaranteed team victory to Newmarket Joggers. Podplus 3Lakes 5k

The third year of the Podplus 3 Lakes 5k Charity event took place on Sunday 3th July in glorious weather at the Julie Rose Stadium, with 225 entrants walking, jogging, and running around the three Conningbrook lakes.

Nearly £2000 has been raised so far for the Kent Branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre in Canterbury, and the Kennington Scout Group, who are both raising vital funds to build new premises.

The event was started by Kent based world record holder Mimi Anderson, who next week is heading out to the hottest place in the world to run the Double Badwater event – 292 miles non stop starting in Death Valley 282ft below sea level and running to 14505ft, when she is turning around and running back down to become the first British female to achieve the challenge!

Podplus thanks all the entrants, Mimi, plus a number of local businesses. Brett’s Aggregates helped to secure the route around the 3 Conningbrook Lakes – and Podplus received tremendous encouragement and support from them throughout. Podplus Sports Shop and Injury Clinic organised and hosted the event, and the Julie Rose Stadium provided the host venue, and Ashford AC provided the Insurance license. New Balance sports equipment provided prizes for the winners and team challenge. Printing.com provided 10,000 entry forms, Corrego provided fresh and tasty Pink lady apples for our finishing fruit, and notjustcakes.co.uk with the finishing cup cakes.

The most delightful turn of the day was when the race director Kate Austen’s father stepped in to initiate an impromptu ‘Happy Birthday’ sing song, from the 200 people on the start line, to celebrate the start of the race on her birthday!!
