Kirklees 10k Challenge

132 runners took part in the inaugural year of the Kirklees 10k Challenge hosted by Huddersfield Christian Fellowship. There was good sunshine and a friendly atmosphere to welcome the participants from a range of different ages and abilities. It was a good spirited race along the canal footpath and a portion of roadside pavement.

Kirklees 10k Challenge

It was a relatively flat route for the undulating scenery of Huddersfield with the exception of one more challenging climb between the 3k and 4k markers. The second half of the course rejoined the canal footpath from Linthwaite and wound through some picturesque views before running down the final straight and finishing outside the entrance to Cathedral House (Huddersfield Christian Fellowship building).

The Gentlemen's race was won by Rickie Wilson in 36 minutes 17 seconds, and the lady's race by Jacqui Khoueiry in 42 minutes and 43 seconds.

Funds raised from the event went to the childrens work at the church, and the Kirklees 10k Challenge will be returning in May 2012 with entries opening in the New Year.

Edinburgh Marathon Festival

Phil Nicholls overcame a severe bout of cramp that briefly forced him to stop running a mile from home, while Sarah Harris also admitted to finding the going tough as they both emerged triumphant in their first competitive outings over this distance.

Twenty-seven-year-old Nicholls won in a time of 2 hrs 19 mins 22 secs, exactly a minute ahead of Scottish and British internationalist Martin Williams, a former Edinburgh champion with whom he trains at the Tipton Harriers club in the English Midlands.

Ross Houston of Central Athletics, two time winner of Kilomathon Scotland, maintained his recent good form to be the first home-based Scot to finish, claiming third place in a highly respectable time of 2:23:17.

The women's event was won in 2:43:01 by Sarah Harris, a 35-year-old from Nottingham who runs out of the Long Eaton club as she, too, stepped up to full Marathon distance in style and she said the backing from spectators had played a significant part in keeping her going.

Nicola Duncan, an actuary who is originally from Galway but now lives in Edinburgh improved on last year's third placed finish to take the runner-up spot in a time of 2:49:56. Third place was taken by Angela Hibbs, a lecturer at Northumbria University in sports bio-mechanics, who finished runner-up in 2007.

The men's Half Marathon was won by Andrew Douglas from Inverclyde AC. The women's Half Marathon was won by Becky Penty, a 27-year-old from Highgate Harriers who set a new course record of 1:15:31.

The Hairy Haggis team relay was won by Tricky Too in a time of 2:33:44, while Whec's Whippets finished second in 2:50:05.

With the Edinburgh Marathon Festival taking place over two days for the first time Bryan Mackie, a 32-year-old from Edinburgh Athletics Club, claimed Saturday's 10K title in 34:09, Christy MacLeod, a 24-year-old from Stornoway, winning the women's race in 39:12.

Also on Saturday Craig Neil, a 26-year-old from Central Athletics won the inaugural 5km race in 18:04 secs, while Riko Trees, a 33-year-old from Reading, won the women's event in 23:20

Saturday's 3K junior race was won by Cameron Gilmour, a 14-year-old from Edinburgh in 10:17 while 12-year-old Robyn Connolly from Glasgow's Victoria Park club won the girls race in 11:49. The 1.5 K junior race was won by Andrew Hogg, 10-year-old from Berwick-on-Tweed, whose twin sister Cara finished runner-up in the girls event to Sarah Tait, a 10-year-old from Edinburgh.

Brathay Trust Windermere 10 in 10 & Marathon

The rain subsided and the clouds parted as the intrepid Brathay Trust 10 in 10 competitors (10 marathons on 10 consecutive days) prepared for their final lap of Lake Windermere yesterday. The crowds gathered around the starting line gave the 13 runners a tumultuous reception before cheering them off, at 9.30am, ahead of the start of the Brathay Trust Windermere Marathon.

An hour later the shotgun rang out to set the marathon runners on their way around arguably the most scenic and challenging marathon course in Europe.

And what a day it turned out to be. From over 1,000 registrations 685 runners made it onto the course. Some were happy just to complete the run whilst others simply flew around England’s biggest lake on a mission to smash records.

One such man, Stephen Littler of Wesham Road Runners near Preston, led the race from the start and soon disappeared from view as he proceeded to run the 26.2 mile course in an astonishing 02:32:08, a full minute and a half faster than the previous record.

Nicola Shaw was the first female to cross the line with an impressive time of 03:11:53.

The Brathay Trust Windermere 10 in 10 and Marathon continues to raise much needed funds for Brathay Trust, the national charity based in Ambleside that inspires young people to become successful, confident and responsible citizens, and helps them to fulfil their potential.

It’s hoped that this year’s marathon will raise over £60,000 for the charity.

Notts 10 Mile Road Race

Exceptionally high winds did the runners no favours at the 40th anniversary of the Notts 10 road race, held at the National Water Sports Centre, Holme Pierrepont.

This year’s event, supported by Up and Running and Total Reclaims, incorporated both the Midland Counties AA and Notts AAA championship. The race attracted runners from a wide area with entrants from Kent, Rochdale, Leeds and London but most from Nottinghamshire and the wider East Midlands.

Fast times were out of the question with experienced runners finishing over two minutes down on their expected times over the two lap course. However, the conditions did not deter Loughborough based Paul Richardson of OWLS AC from producing a positive and strong run leading from gun to finish in 52:18 from Kevin Seaward, Cardiff AC 52:52, and previous winners Martin Whitehouse and Matt Blunden both from Notts AC 53:50 and 54:33.

The ladies prize also went to a Loughborough team runner as Juliet Doyle from Charnwood AC produced an excellent run in her first Notts 10 finishing 8th overall in 58:25 and in better conditions could well have challenged the women’s course record of 56:12. Former winner Nicki Nealon, Huncote Harriers, was second woman in 62:42 from Sarah Gaunt of Notts AC also in her first Notts ten in AC 64:52.

In the team race it was a victory in the men’s race for Notts AC and in the ladies for Redhill Road Runners.

Not that this race was all about those at the front.

Pier to Pier 7

Pier to Pier 7

776 runners took part in the Pier to Pier run on Sunday in very variable weather conditions. The weather started with sunshine and blue skies with a bit of a breeze but the cloud soon gathered, the wind picked up and there were a few showers before and during the race with 1 heavy shower of hailstones at the finish for good measure. By the time the presentation was made the sun was back out.

Pier to Pier 7

The strong, blustery headwind whipped up the sand on the beaches and put a stop to any course record being broken but Rosie Smith from Durham City came close in 42m41s just 27 seconds outside the women's course record.

Guildford Lions Charity Hatchlands 10k

Guildford Lions Club held their first Charity 10k event at "Hatchlands" at East Clandon, Surrey, courtesy of the National Trust in aid of the British Heart Foundations 50th Anniversary.

Although rather fewer runners than planned entered the event there were unanimous comments from the competitors that the course was excellent across the parkland of the NT property and that the event was well organised. The Club will certainly be planning a similar event next year to build on this years entries.

Keynsham 10K

Keynsham 10K

Martin Cox of Salford Harriers made it a hat-trick of wins in the Keynsham 10K but his time of 33 minutes and 51 seconds was 40 seconds slower than in 2010, probably due to the blustery conditions. He left second place Nathan Young of Bristol and West 34 seconds behind, whilst Tom Fisher of Avon Valley Runners was in third place a further 15 seconds adrift.

Keynsham 10K

Photos: Winner Martin Cox (310) and second placed Nathan Young (140). Women's winner Nicola Brookland

Nicola Brookland of Bristol and West was the first lady home in an excellent time of 37 minutes and 48 seconds, beating last year’s winner Gwen Kinsey of Stroud Athletic Club by well over a minute.

Kieran Young of Bristol and West won the Junior Male category for the second year in a time of 38 minutes, 7 seconds. Nathan and Kieran plus four times individual winner Mick O’Doherty easily took the Affiliated Men’s team prize for Bristol and West. The Somer AC team consisting of Claire Blewitt, Deborah Griffin and Joanne Langford won the Affiliated Female team trophy.

Veterans’ classes were won by Nikki Russell, Jackie Stott, Pat Cameron and Michael Willcox. Team Savage retained their Open Club title and Bailey Carpets were the winning Business Team again. First Keynsham male was Mark Fear and female Clare Jolliffe.

The event was organised by 1st Keynsham Scouts who will be sharing the money raised with Keynsham and District Mencap Society.

Shaw Stampede 10K multi-terrain race

Sunny conditions greeted the one hundred runners who lined up at the Beeches for the sixth running of the Shaw Stampede 10K multi-terrain race organised by Avon Valley Runners and Stampede Sports and traverses the trails around the villages of Shaw, Whitley, Neston & Atworth. The race saw a close fought battle between last year's winner, Simon Nott of John Bentley School and Bertie Powell of London's Woodford Green Athletics Club. In the final mile Bertie managed to open up a twenty metre lead over Simon but managed to miss the final turning into the Beeches allowing Simon to take the lead. However in a magnanimous sporting gesture Simon refused to cross the finish line until Bertie had caught up and the Race Referee awarded a dead heat with both athletes recording times of thirty four minutes and seven seconds. In third place Chris Maxwell of Chippenham Harriers led his club mates to the team prize. Richard Morgetroyd of Avon Valley Runners claimed the 1st MV40 title and Richard Schofield of Chippenham Harriers the 1st MV50 title.

In the ladies race Michelle Maxwell of Chippenham Harriers took victory ahead of Suzanne Clare from Atworth and Magdalena Powell of Woodford Green AC. Melanie Blackman of Chippenham Harriers claimed the 1st FV40 title and Tina Towler of Avon Valley Runners the 1st FV50 title.

In the Keane Kanter fun run Nick Watts from Calne was the first runner home with Jade Littlechild of Corsham being the first girl to finish.

It is hoped that the event has raised around six hundred pounds for CLIC Sargent.

The Wessex Ridgeway Relay

The Wessex Ridgeway is a long distance footpath which runs from Avebury to Uplyme and enters Dorset near Tollard Royal. In Dorset it passes over some of the largest hills, including Hambledon Hill, Bullbarrow, Cerne Abbas Gaint's Head, Pilsden Pen and Lambert's Castle. Each year the Gillingham Trotters organise a 12 stage relay race of teams of between 2 and 6 runners over the 100km (62 mile) route.

This year 24 intrepid teams assembled by the pond at Tollard Royal as 7:30 a.m. on Sunday Morning. The teams had come from as far away as Finchampstead, Middlesex and Marlborough, but included the local clubs of Dorset Doddlers, Frome Running club, Gillingham Trotters, Maiden Castle Running Club, Wimborne AC and Yeovil Town Road Running Club.

At the end of the first 8 mile leg to Shroton a group of 4 teams had broken away, but by the end of the second leg the lead pack was down to two teams, Wimborne and the Dorset Doddlers. These two teams exchanged the lead several times during the course of the day and at the start of the last leg Wimborne were 2 minutes in the lead. The runners were observed halfway through the leg crossing the A35 and Wimborne's lead was less than 20 seconds. Waiting at the finish the tension increased as Wimborne and Doddlers supporters waited for their runner to come into view. In the end Wimborne's runner had put in a really hard effort and opened up a 2 minute gap. Wimborne finished in 8:01:58 and the Doddlers in 8:03:40

Meanwhile a little further back in the field Dorset Doddlers ladies team had opened up an unassailable lead to take the ladies prize for the third consecutive year.

Notable achievements were two teams of two runners, who individually ran over 30 miles each over some of the hilliest terrain in Dorset. The Axe Valley Runners team managed to finish a very creditable 6th in a time of 9:08:56

Included in the entry fee was a post-race meal for all the runners at the Talbot Arms, which was gratefully consumed by the 140 competitors taking part

The finishing times:

1 Wimborne A 8:01:58
2 Doddlers A 8:03:40
3 We are not from Around here 8:39:56
