Race The Sun
Twenty-one teams completed the round the Island Race The Sun relay event on the Isle of Man on Saturday.
Teams of up to 10 runners took part with the aim of completing a clockwise lap of the Island’s Radd ny Foillan 98-mile coastal footpath between sunrise and sunset starting and finishing on Peel Promenade.
A team from Northern AC won the scratch and handicap race titles completing the 98-mile route in 12h 43m 11s. The handicap race was based on predicted times supplied by each of the competitors and this information was used to determine start times.

The race began with the first wave of runners starting at 5.17am on Peel Promenade for the first leg which was an 11.45 mile run along the coastal path to The Cronk.
The other legs were as follows: Leg 2 - The Cronk to Point of Ayre (10.55miles); Leg 3 - Point of Ayre to Maughold (10.48miles); Leg 4 - Maughold to Laxey (8.98miles); Leg 5 - Laxey to Douglas (7.61miles); Leg 6 - Douglas to Port Grenaugh (10.73miles); Leg 7 - Port Grenaugh to Chapel Bay PSM (10.8miles); Leg 8 - Chapel Bay to Port Erin (7.81miles); Leg 9 - Port Erin to Niarbyl (8.31miles); Leg 10 - Niarbyl to Peel (5.61miles).
Mark Eastham, Fundraising Co-ordinator for The Children’s Centre, said the event - now in its fourth year - was a big success and had raised around £8,000 this year. He thanked all the teams which took part and raised sponsorship which will go to support vulnerable children and young people in the Isle of Man through The Children’s Centre’s Mobex project.
The Children’s Centre is the Isle of Man’s leading children’s charity and works directly with over 1,000 children, young people and families each week. It runs 15 vital services across the Island including play groups, nursery care and after school clubs.

Keith Chandler Memorial-Hastings Runners 5 Mile
The 6th annual Keith Chandler Memorial-Hastings Runners 5 Mile took place on Sunday, May 15th, in Hastings, East Sussex.
Three hundred and twenty-eight runners were greeted with sunny skies and the prospect of running a PB on a very fast course.

Todd Leckie from the Hailsham Harriers won the event in a course record time of 25:16 and went home £100 richer for his efforts. The ladies race was won by Emma Richards, also from the Hailsham Harriers, in a time of 30:39.
Steve Cale from the Shewsbury AC, a seasoned fell runner, happened to be in Hastings visiting his Aunt on her 100th birthday and decided to give the race a go. He came in third overall which seems to indicate he handles the flats as well as the hills.

Eyam Half Marathon
Sheffield athlete Andrew Thake beat a 430-strong field to win the Eyam Half Marathon for the fourth year running.
The Hallamshire Harrier crossed the line in one of road racing’s toughest events in a time of 1:16:40, a staggering five minutes ahead of his nearest rival, unattached runner Matthew Battensby. Stephen Pope was third in 01:22:06 in blustery conditions.
The popular, stamina-sapping event takes competitors on a grueling course involving more than 1,200 ft of ascent. The race is a single loop circuit run entirely on the road surface and passes through the hamlets of Bretton and Abney, skirts around Eyam Moor and returns to the Peak District village via Sir William Hill.
Making it a Hallamshire Harrier double, Liz Such picked up the ladies trophy in a superb time of 01:28:39. She was just over a minute ahead of Christine Howard of Matlock AC (01:29:59) with Sally Fawcett of Racing TNT coming home third in 01:32:33.

Entries for the much loved ‘rat race’ came from throughout the UK and all needed the refreshment again supplied by Buxton Water.
So did those who took part in the 1.3mile fun run who all received certificates signed by Dee Cafferi, the first woman to have sailed single-handed and non-stop around the world in both directions.
The efforts of all runners was honoured on the day with a flypast from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s C-47 Dakota.
To mark the Royal British Legion’s 90th year, the race organizers nominated the Legion poppy Appeal as one of its main charities.
Eyam Half Marathon Committee chairman Steve Brown said: “We are absolutely delighted that the Memorial Flight agreed to provide a flypast. It was a fabulous sight and a real honour.”
Over the last 17 years Eyam half marathon has not only become one of the most respected and well-loved road races in the country. It has helped the ‘plague village’ of Eyam raise more than £100,000 largely for cancer charities and local community organizations.
Steve added: “It never ceases to amaze me how this event captures the imagination of runners and has become such a popular and respected half marathon.
“This is all down to the generosity and support of the people of Eyam and the surrounding villages. We again received a lot of comments from runners full of praise for the way the event was organized which is a credit to the many volunteer marshals and helpers on the day.”

Bupa Great Manchester Run
Haile Gebrselassie and Helen Clitheroe on a very cool and windy Sunday morning despatched their talented rivals to minor positions with ruthless performances at the Bupa Great Manchester Run.
The 38-year-old “Emperor”, with a fourth overall and third consecutive victory in the 10km road race, convincingly dismissed the challenge of young British pretender Chris Thompson to win in 28 minutes 10 seconds.
Clitheroe surprised even herself when becoming the first Briton, leading from gun-to-tape to score a convincing victory in 31min 45sec.
David Weir, the inaugural winner of the wheelchair race in 2003, also dominated his event for a fifth time to clinch his latest title in 22min 23sec while Nikki Emmerson claimed the women’s crown with an even more emphatic performance in 31min 50sec.

LongLeg Run 2011
After the event’s first year in 2010, The LongLeg 2011 was sure to be a good one. And it did not disappoint! Fitstuff, the Guildford based running specialists were proud to sponsor the event again and were pleased to see that numbers had grown from last year.
Whilst all the cyclists embarked on the LongLeg Sportive that was held on the same day, the trail runners warmed up and prepared for this spectator and family friendly trail run. Reading between the lines of the flowery description of the event on the allabouttriathlons website would have revealed that this trail run was no walk in the park!
Nick Druce, last years winner, was present on the start line to defend his title. Sam “I’ve only done one trail run before” Barnes was also on the start line. “When I clocked him at registration I thought he might be quick” said Nick afterwards…
The usual crew from the Canicross Trail Runners were also there. Their dogs howled with anticipation at the start, desperate to get going! Mark Dunbar lead from start to finish with a time of 52.22.
The 10k started next. Nick Druce took off like a rocket as is his custom. However Sam Barnes and Lee Greatorex were on his heels. Sure enough by the first lap the front 5 had taken Nick, and Sam stormed ahead so far that no one could catch him. The climbs and very loose soft sand didn’t stop him from setting a new course record of 38.38! Will Clark came away with second in 39.46.
Anne Davidson stepped up from last year’s 5k to this year’s 10k. She won last year’s 5k and she won this years 10k in 48.52, a good 3 minutes ahead of second place Anastasia Hounslow.
The 5k was a much closer fought affair. Only 1 second separated Nick Smith and second place Simon Powell Jackson! Well versed in allabouttriathlons trail runs, Leigh Rennie had clearly done her homework for this women’s 5k and romped home in just over 26 minutes. Cross training on her new mountain bike had clearly worked! Second place Sara Ward looked strong at the finish. Not only coming in second in the women’s event in 28.28, she beat men’s third place Alexis Shirtliff by 24 seconds. 12 seconds behind him Victoria Clark came in taking third place in the women’s so making it a double for the Clark team!
Many thanks to the ubiquitous Sussex Sports Photography for taking the pictures.

28th Knowle Fun Run
Ideal cool and dry running conditions lead to fast times for most of the 1900 runners who entered the 28th running of the Knowle Fun Run.
Joanne Malin from BBC radio WM’s morning show sent the runners on their way on the stroke of midday. Overall winner Christopher Ashford from Knowle was also the first local home said ‘It’s a great course with no traffic and loads of residents outside their houses cheering us round’.
‘We were delighted when Joanne re-arranged her Sunday lunch in order to be with us’, said Knowle and Dorridge Lion President Adrian Harris. ‘She really enjoyed entertaining the Mini Runners and gave words of encouragement for the Fun Runners about to set out on their 5 mile run. She is a true professional’.
The Lions were grateful for the continued sponsorship from Hunters Estate Agency as well as many other companies. ‘Despite the financial situation all the costs of the day were met by corporate sponsors in cash or in kind before anyone entered,’ says organiser Simon Newell, ‘so we were able to tell runners that every £ of entry fee, donation or sponsorship raised will go to our nominated charities – the Warwickshire & Northants Air Ambulance, Stroke Association and local Scouts. We hope to have raised over £40,000 when all the sponsorship comes in.’
The day started well when nearly 300 under 9 year old Mini Runners were cheered around the Arden school fields each wearing their complimentary cream Fun Run t-shirt all keen to pick up their Mars bar and certificate of achievement. The winners Jacob Redden, Millie Mcpherson; Oliver Adnitt; Lillie-Mae Woodbridge all received gifts courtesy of MiniRun sponsor Sytner Mini.
All winners took away trophies and prizes and everyone received the traditional certificate of achievement.
Overall winner was popular local resident Christopher Ashford who completed the 5 (and a bit) mile course in 27mins 49secs

Winners of the Walter Smith’s team prize were the Endorphin Seekers whose aggregate time for 4 runners of 2 hours 6 minutes and 2 seconds was just 1 second ahead of Knowle and Dorridge Running Club A team and 36 seconds ahead of Brueton parkrun A team. Solihull and Small Heath were second team. Girls and Junior team trophy was won by a Lady K Leveson school team also from Knowle.
This year’s 1st Super Veteran was Graham Lawrence from Yardley Wood for the 3rd year running in a very creditable 34:43mins.
‘It’s great to lead the team organising such a popular and successful community event,’ said organiser Simon Newell. ‘It takes well over 150 helpers on the day, we now have to thank so many people, too many to mention here, who helped to ensure the day went off without a hitch. Anyone interested in ensuring the continued success of the Knowle Fun Run should contact the Knowle and dorridge Lions now via 2011@knowlefunrun.org.uk
