The Stanmer 5 miles, a challenging elite race sponsored by Saucony, is an exciting addition to the Brighton and Hove sports calendar.
Created by the Grounded Events Company - organisers of the Brighton Marathon - the Saucony Stanmer 5 brings together some of the country’s best athletes on Sunday 26 June 2011.
The elite event is part of a fabulous day of races ranging from an open 8km trail run to a 1km run for families and a series of age-graded 2km races for children.
Fastest man in the field is Mark Warmby of Newham and Essex Beagles. Coached by former Olympian Gary Staines, Warmby was fourth fastest in the UK over 10 kilometres last year with the excellent time of 28min55sec.
Dan Robinson makes a welcome return to the city after finishing fourth in the second Brighton Marathon last month. Robinson’s best over 10km stands at 29:12 from four years ago.
The men’s field currently boasts seven men who have dipped under 30min for 10km, promising a keenly fought race.
Local interest comes from Lewes’s 23-year-old rising star Rob Mullett whose best 10km time of 29min33sec came in Louisville Kentucky this year, putting him currently third on the 2011 UK ranking list.
Chichester’s James Baker, who finished a fine tenth in last month’s Brighton Marathon, is also in the mix.
Justina Hislop of Clapham Chasers, 33:15 last year, is the fastest amongst the women signings to date. Susie Bush of Newbury has also dipped under 34min for 10km.
Prize money of £500 is on offer for both men’s and women’s winners.
The Saucony Stanmer 5 is a fast three-lap road course through Stanmer Park, 3.5miles north of the city of Brighton and Hove. The park will host the South of England cross country championships in 2012.
