Endurancelife Coastal Trail Series - Stage 9, Exmoor Coastal Trail Challenge
Exmoor is the setting for arguably the most scenic trail run in the UK, the incredibly tough stage 9 of the Endurancelife Coastal Trail Series. This event is well established and a must for all trail running addicts out there. For the first time an Ultra category was introduced, for those who didn’t feel the steep climb out of the Heddon Valley hard enough the first time around. All the routes headed west to start with and took on the steep sided Heddon valley exit on cold legs. The reward was spectacular views across the Bristol Channel and surrounding dramatic cliffs is worth the climb as the route continues west on a cliff edge path. Once again the sun shone with a light breeze on Saturday, 16th April. Over 850 people took on stage nine of the Endurancelife Coastal Trail Series. The trail runners had a choice of four distances 10km, Half Marathon, Marathon and Ultra. All four way marked routes guided the off roaders through ancient wooded valleys and across open moorland and along the South West Coastal path where the rocky narrow trails cling to the cliff tops.

The event base was located in the Heddon Valley a perfect setting with the Hunters Inn pub providing a BBQ and other well earned refreshments.
James Heraty from Endurancelife said; “the addition of the Ultra to this stunning location means there is something for every trail runner out there. The Exmoor CTS attracts many trail runners back time and time again due to the incredible landscape. The Exmoor event is stage nine of a ten part series which draws runners from the UK, Europe and beyond to the UK’s top trail running spots.”
After completing the 34 mile Ultra Robert Mead said: “this the best course in the series so I couldn’t miss this, the whole package is the highlight, such a fantastic course and good organisation. We’ll see if it’s been a good warm up for the London Marathon, but that course won’t be as good as today’s."
Charlie Beavis flew in from America to take part and said “I spotted this event online and it struck me as a fantastic way to take in this incredible coastline, brilliantly organised and I’m already looking forward to heading back for more next year, maybe even the marathon."
Gareth Craft won the Marathon and said “I absolutely loved it. It’s such a fantastic course it really suited me I much prefer a hilly course I enjoy the up and downs and don’t really like the flats.”
Endurancelife are grateful to the support from the CTS 2010-11 sponsors: Inov-8, Clif, and For Goodness Shakes.
The Exmoor full results will be online soon and photos are just a click away.

Hurstbourne 5 Multi-terrain race
This was the third running of this challenging off-road race in the heart of the beautiful North Wessex Downs. A wonderful day for running saw a good mix of club and fun runners start the steep ascent of Hurstbourne Hill. First to the top and thus King of the hill was Sean Holmes from Overton Harriers. Club mate Lee Tolhurst then took the lead and finished the “undulating” five mile course in an excellent time of 31:06. Peter Turrell from Liss runners came in second, with Sean Holmes managing to hang on to third despite losing a shoe on the decent through the woods.

First lady was Kate Towerton in a new course record of 34:23. Kate also managed to grab the Queen of the hill prize on the way. Peter Baker won the first villager trophy for the second year in succession.
There were a number of truly excellent performances, including Tim Hughes of White Horse Harriers, 1st M55 and 4th overall in a time of 32:04; Peter Hawker from Wessex RR, 1st M70 and 39th overall in a time of 41:52 and John Goulding from Andover AC, 1st V75 and 59th overall in a superb time of 46:55.
The 2K fun run was won by Louis McCann from Overton.

Bolt round The Holt 2011
Perfect conditions at this year’s Bolt round The Holt, sponsored by BMI Mount Alvernia, led to a few course records tumbling in both the women and men’s distances.
The event started with the howling and gnashing of dogs of the Canicross Trail Runners taking off first, so clearing the way for the 21k, 10k and 5k trail runners. Ranging from serious club to charity fun runners, all, directly or indirectly, raised funds for GUTS and St. Lukes Cancer Centre.
Previously unseen Nigel Burnell dominated the men’s 5k and won in 18.58 with over 2 minutes separating him from Bolt expert Mark Snowball. Not surprisingly then that the course record was smashed by almost a minute!
The women’s 5k was equally as one sided with Rhian Weeks winning in 24.59 just over a minute ahead of Emily Barker.
Similarly, a previously unseen competitor won the men’s 10k. Andrew Towersey romped home in 36.18 a good clear 2 minutes ahead of Bolt expert Kris Rush, who improved his position from last year’s 5th to 2nd place.
The women’s 10k was a much closer affair with Sally Bowry, Sandra Norwood, and Jenny Philips battling it out at the finish. Norwood crossed the line first in 45.20 just ahead of Philips, with seconds separating all three of them.
A few of those well versed in the Bolt 21k lined up on the startline, promising an interesting tussle. But unexpectedly, newcomer Matt King frustrated Dave Chapmans chances of securing victory, coming in first in 1.16.20 beating the course record by a 5 second whisker!
Last year’s Emma Humphrey came back to defend her title and did so in resounding fashion! Crossing the line first in 1.28.28, 7th overall, beating her own course best and setting a new course record! Laura Bartlett came in second in 1.35.48 with Lucy Snowball stepping up from 10k to 21k, holding her own and coming in 3rd.
Thanks to BMI Mount Alvernia, Starbucks, Fitstuff, and Medirest and race organisers allabouttriathlons.

The Hertford Charity 10K
Hundreds of fundraisers took to the streets in the annual Hertford Charity Run. 368 participants finished the 6.2-mile (10km) race, including a group of people dressed as mice and a man accompanied by a dog.
The event was in aid of the Ron Pickering Memorial Fund for young athletes, but people could also run for other causes - amongst them Cancer Research UK, the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Bayford Village Hall.
Race director and Hertford Town Council leader Cllr Linda Radford (Con, Bengeo) said: “It was a really lovely day, a bit warm for some of the runners but everybody got back safe and sound and had a good time.
“There were lots of supporters at the finish line cheering people on and we raised a substantial amount for the memorial fund, although we don’t know the exact total yet.
The overall winner was Alex Milne, who completed the race in 35 min 2 sec. The quickest woman was Sarah Partridge, who finished in 42 min 27 sec and came 22nd out of all the participants.
Ron’s widow, Jean, was at the event, and prizes were presented by BBC sports commentator Stuart Storey.
The race began with a warm-up at Hertford’s Richard Hale School in Hale Road. Runners started off by Hertford Town Football Club in West Street and travelled along Cole Green Way, through Hertingfordbury, Staines Green and Letty Green, ending at Hertford’s County Hall in Pegs Lane.

Frenchay 10K
The 31st Frenchay 10K run was a great success. The good weather produced 210 entries on the day, a record for the run. Overall there were 702 entrants. This was slightly down on the 2010 total but as the run coincided with the London marathon, the level of entries was better than expected.
The winner completed the run in 34:43, an excellent time for the undulating course which finishes with a steep climb back up Blackberry Hill in Fishponds. The 2011 run was supporting two Bristol based charities the Heartful Dodgers & Meningitis UK.

The Lambourn Centre 6km Fun Run
32 Runners took part in the 18th annual 6km Fun Run held at The Lambourn Centre on Sunday 17th April.
The numbers were slightly down compared to previous years. Lambourn Centre Manager, Rose Metalli said, “Although it clashed with the London Marathon we don't think that is a major factor, but is more likely to be due to the fun-run clashing with the Easter holidays this year. This may have caused some of our regular runners to make changes to plans within their running calendar”
Although fewer in numbers, the race was still fiercely contended with 1st placed Tom Watkins cruising home in a very respectable time of 21 minutes, 12 seconds. Runner-up Chris Wilder finished in 21:49 and 3rd was John Peake who also picked up 1st Male Vet in 23:23. This allowed fourth placed Richard Cosgrove to collect the 3rd place trophy in a time of 23:56.
Local competitor Louise McKevitt took first Female in a time of 30:05 followed closely by 1st Female Vet, Therese Kehoe in a time of 30.12.
2nd Female went to Misa Ritchie.
It was a also good family day out for the Haresnapes, with Daniel Haresnape winning the 1st Male under 18 category in 27.35 and Michelle Haresnape winning 3rd Female in 33.41
Although the races covers just a 6k route, it is nonethelesss still one of the most challenging of local races. Starting at the Lambourn Centre, runners then have a steep hill of one kilometre to climb, taking them across rough ground before gradually coming back down through country lanes and the village centre back to the finish at the centre.

Mulberry Bush Montessori Balfon 10K
A spectacular day, warm and sunny. The crowds were out in force in rural Balfron to support the 5th Mulberry Bush Montessori Balfron 10k.

Robert Gilroy, a previous winner in Balfron in 2008, "fresh" from his great performance last week in the Lochaber Marathon stormed home nearly 30 seconds clear of Chris Deveney, who repeated his 2nd place here last year. Hungarian Jozsef Farkas followed in 3rd place.
Jane Fanning from Serpentine RC in London was first lady in 39:23, followed by Claire Couper and Gillian Carr of Corstorphine.
They led a field of nearly 500 runners of all abilities, including a team of 4 dressed as the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, the Wicked Witch of the West and Dorothy. Unfortunately Dorothy's red trainers didn't fly her home quite as quickly as some others!
Today's Mulberry Bush Montessori Balfron 10k was covered by BBC Scotland's Rhona MacLeod and John Beattie, and will be fetaured on BBC2 Scotland's "Sport Nation" program, scheduled for broadcast Tuesday 3rd May at 7pm.

Boston Marathon
Geoffrey Mutai won the Boston Marathon, running the fastest marathon ever run by :58 seconds with a time of 2:03:02!
Just when we thought Eammanuels Mutai's run at the Virgin London Marathon was the performance of the week, Geoffrey Mutai wins the Boston marathon in a staggering in 2:03:02, the fastest time over the distance by 58 seconds. He was closely followed by Moses Mosop in 2:03:06.
Because the race had a strong tailwind on a downhill course, Mutai's run does not qualify as a World record however!
