Race report: Virgin London Marathon, April 17, 2011 - Men's race
The quickest marathon London has ever seen, and the fourth fastest ever.
What a run from Emmanuel Mutai, to secure double victory for Kenya today in the 2011 Virgin London Marathon. In doing so he recorded 61:54 for the second half of the race. Stunning running!
Three-time winner Martin Lel (05/07/08) proved, perhaps even beyond his own expectations that his late addition the the men's elite field was more than just a big-name publicity effort, taking his second silver (he finished second in 2006 also), by using his sprinting power in front of Buckingham Palace to out-kick 2010 Rotterdam Marathon winner (and 2:04:48 PB) athlete Patrick Makau. A Kenyan clean-sweep of the top three male positions, to add to first and third in the ladies. The global power in marathon running is clear to see.
2:05:44 only good enough for third - the marathon truly is moving on...
Lee Merrien (14th, 2:14:25), Andrew Lemoncello (15th, 2:15:23) and David Webb (19th, 2:17:39) were the top three British male athletes.
Lemoncello looked to be really suffering in the late stages and was passed by Merrien in the final mile.
