Sticky Toffee Trail Run 10km & Cartmel Trail Race
Sub 4 minute miler and Commonwealth Games 800m runner Neil Speaight, from Belgrave Harriers, swapped his track spikes for trail shoes and won Saturday's opening 10km event at the Lakeland Trails in Cartmel on Saturday 2nd April. With torrential overnight rain, the going was distinctly soft to heavy underfoot. Yet the spring sun shone as the field set off from Cartmel Racecourse at 11 o'clock, and Neil made light work of the mud, winning the Sticky Toffee Trail Run 10km in a new course record of 39.08. Sarah Ridehalgh, Accrington Road Runners, was a runaway winner in the ladies race, setting another course record of 42.59, and finishing off her preparations for the London Marathon in two weeks time where she hopes to run under three hours.

The Blue Riband event of the day, the 2 o'clock 18km Cartmel Trail Race, was won by bookies favourite, GB International and in-form cross country runner, Gareth Raven, Sale Harriers, in 67.54, knocking almost two minutes off the previous course record - an outstanding performance given the soft conditions. Runner up was Alex Whittem in 73.38, from Calder Valley Fell Runners, with former course record holder, Nick Leigh, Altrincham & District AC finishing in 76.20, in third. Winner of the ladies race by several lengths was Ulverston resident and GB International Lizzie Adams, running for Hallamshire Harriers in 79.34. Second place went to Pauling Munro, Bingley Harriers in 87.25 with Angela Armstrong, Carlisle Triathlon Club, making the podium in third place in 91.30.

Over one thousand runners from all over the UK, including visitors from United States, Holland, Belgium and Ireland finished the various events on the day, all earning themselves a Sticky Toffee Pudding for their efforts, along with an event T shirt memento. Milnthorpe Steel Band provided live entertainment throughout the day, with singer Pete Lashley performing at the prize giving. Richard Leafe, Chief Executive of the Lake District National Park Authority, finished the 18km Trail Race in 1 hr 49 mins and then presented over £1000 worth of prizes sponsored by lifestyle brand PUMA at the prize giving. The event was supporting the local King George V Allithwaite Playing Field Committee, along with the regional charities Cancer Care and North West Air Ambulance.

Sussex Marathon 2011
Over 300 runners attended the first Sussex Marathon. There were excellent conditions for racing and the event had a real 'big marathon' feel.
The first loop being slightly undulating allowed all the runners to settle quickly into their pace and the race leader held his position from very early on. As the first loop of the event finished the runners descended into the country lanes around Penhurst, which proved to be challenging for all.
Feed stations were situated at key points throughout the course, providing much needed fuel and hydration for what turned out to be a very warm mothering Sunday. The organisers have had excellent feedback from local residents and competitors on a great first time marathon event for this area. Their thanks go to their sponsors and retailers, Budgens/Jempsons Ltd for all feed stations, SIS, Runners retreat, Ant Bliss, TL Sports events - Chip timing systems and race equipment.

Grantham Cup 10k trail race
At noon a klaxon signalled the start of the second running of the Grantham Cup 10k trail race at the Belton Horse Trials. Despite it being Mother's Day entries were up by 20% on last year. Leading the runners from the show jumping arena towards the "cliff face" of a hill up round the folly was Blockbuster the third, a bit of a cross country specialist himself.
First across the line was Aaron Scott of Nottingham AC in 35:14. He was followed by Mark Greenwood of Nene Valley Harriers and William Strangeway. First woman was Emily Collinge of Gosforth Harriers in 43:33. Zoe Smith of Rutland Running Club was second and Naomi Collier of the organising club Grantham Athletic Club third.
Although the field came from all over the UK the strong presence of runners from Grantham was reflected in the prize list with the veteran men's prize going to Grantham AC's Arthur Short, while first Under 20 man was Matt Smith from GAC and the under 20 lady's title went to Naomi Collier also from GAC. The men's team prize was retained by Grantham Athletic Club with Adam Madge just in front of his two team mates.
Making their Team debut at this event the ladies of Grantham Running Club were runners up to the vastly more experienced Stamford Striders with Kirsty Ballaam leading home Deborah Horobin and Ruth Dunstan.
In order to mark the occasion Sleaford Breweries produced a special beer called 10k trail ale which was presented to all the finishers.

Among the women Carly Needham of Rochdale Harriers took the honours in 38 mins 23 secs with Joanna Goorney (V40) from Wesham Road Runners second in 41mins 13 secs, and former Radcliffe member Maria Lowe of Astley and Tyldesley RC third in 41mins 34 secs.

Numbers were slightly up on last year and this was the second time the course has been used. Officials said they were well pleased with such a good turnout.
Staff from the local Asda store took part, running for cancer charity Tickled Pink. The store supported the race with an £80 donation and then provided doughnuts for everyone!

The 23rd Calne Rotary 10km Charity Fun Run
Good weather (contrary to the weather forecast!) during the setup on Saturday afternoon heralded an ideal day for the entrants of the 23rd annual Rotary Club of Calne 10km Fun Run. 251 runners and walkers, from as far away as Kent and Lincolnshire, entered the race to sample the delights of the countryside in Bowood, as well as raising money for Youth Action Wiltshire and Calne Welfare Charities.
Lady Arabella Unwin, daughter of Lord Lansdowne, started the race at 10am after saying a word of thanks to the participants for supporting the event.
The recent sunny weather meant a much dryer course than usual – and people’s timings improved as a result. The race started with a mile stretch on tarmac, ideal to give the runners a chance to find their legs and spread out before starting the cross country sections, firstly on footpaths and then tracks through the woods. The last mile and a half was past the scenic lake at Bowood and through the park before a final 100m sprint to the finish on tarmac.
For the second year in a row, the winner was 17 year old Simon Nott from Calne. Another year of progress saw him shave a further 14 seconds off his previous record and achieve the new course record with 32 minutes 43 seconds.
In second place was Gary O’Brien from Swindon in a time of 34 minutes 30 seconds. In 3rd place was Stuart Henderson. There was a fine showing from the Junior boys (16 and under) with Finan Trethewey finishing 13th overall in 39 minutes 28 seconds, then Ben Perrett in 41 minutes 37 seconds and Joshua Mastin-Lee in 42 minutes 47 seconds.
The fastest lady was Sam Kelly from Wootton Bassett in a time of 42 minutes 3 seconds, followed by Emma Satchell from Calne in 42 mins 58 seconds.
167 runners finished the course within an hour. Race Director, Alastair Muir, presented the prizes and medals to the top 3 men, ladies and boys and girls of 16 and under. Prizes and medals were kindly donated by Regency Presentations of Calne and Ronhill clothing.
This was the 23rd annual 10km Charity Fun Run organised by the Rotary Club of Calne. It is anticipated that the Rotary Club of Calne will be able to give £1,500 from the event – to be split between Youth Action Wiltshire and Calne Welfare Charities. The main sponsors of the event were npower in Swindon and Sportzform in Chippenham. Our thanks also to the Response Ambulance Centre for providing cover, Bowood staff who helped so much and to all the Rotarians and their friends who provided the marshals and helpers.
To register in advance for next year’s race, please contact the Race Organiser, Alastair Muir, at CalneFunRun@AOL.COM
Bowood kindly opened the coffee shop, which was welcomed by spectators and runners before and after the event.
